The structures of Eu complexes in the adsorbents prepared with various extractants were evaluated by ion beam induced luminescence analysis in an extraction chromatography for minor actinides recovery. The luminescence of Eu was measured with a proton beam obtained from the single-ended accelerator and an argon ion beam obtained from the azimuthally varying field cyclotron in Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application in National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology. In this study, it was confirmed that the spectral shape of Eu complexes in the adsorbents varied depending on the kinds of extractants, and the correlation between the change in the spectra and the structures of Eu complexes was investigated.

In an extraction chromatography method for minor actinides recovery, analysis for the structure of complex in a silica-based adsorbent has been studied to separate minor actinides efficiently. In this study, Eu was used as simulated material of minor actinides, and silica-based adsorbents containing Eu complex were prepared. The ion beam induced luminescence spectra of Eu complexes in silica-based adsorbents were measured, and the basic data for the structures of Eu complexes were obtained.

$$^{129}$$I/$$^{127}$$I and $$Delta$$$$^{14}$$C records in a modern coral from Rowley Shoals off northwestern Australia reflect the 20th-century human nuclear activities and ocean/atmosphere circulations

For a contribution to developing the usage of iodine-129 ($$^{129}$$I) as a tracer of deep-seated fluid, $$^{129}$$I/$$^{127}$$I and $$Delta$$$$^{14}$$C were measured for annual bands (AD 1931-1991) of a modern coral collected from Northwestern Australia; the measurements were performed using the JAEA-AMS-TONO-5MV for $$^{129}$$I/$$^{127}$$I and an AMS facility of the University of Tokyo for $$Delta$$$$^{14}$$C. Results indicate that both $$^{129}$$I/$$^{127}$$I and $$Delta$$$$^{14}$$C distinctly increase from 1950s. The $$Delta$$$$^{14}$$C increase can be ascribed to atmospheric nuclear tests, while the $$^{129}$$I/$$^{127}$$I increase is due to nuclear-fuel reprocessing as well as atmospheric nuclear tests. These results are in good agreement with previous studies, indicating that the $$^{129}$$I/$$^{127}$$I measurement by JAEA-AMS-TONO-5MV has been further developed.

Migrating source of energetic radiation generated by thunderstorm activity

We identify a migrating source of high energy radiation, lasting for several minutes, attributed to thunderstorm activities through the observations of radiation, atmospheric electric field, and meteorological radar echoes at several points. Our findings indicate that the energetic radiation is emitted continuously from a downward hemispherical surface without lightning, the bottom of which is about 300 m above sea level, and this source of radiation moves from north to south above the observation site at a speed of about 7 m/s. The radiation source probably moves along with the negatively charged region of the cloud at the height of around 1 km, because the estimated migration of the radiation source is consistent with the observed movement of atmospheric electric field variation between ground-based observation sites and with the wind speed and direction at about 1 km altitude. This movement implies that the intensive electric field produced by the charged region in the thundercloud generates a radiation source. In addition, our results suggest that the low altitude of radiation source is related to no lightning activity during the energetic radiation emission.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

Temporal and spatial variations of radiocarbon in Japan Sea Bottom Water

In 1995 and 2000, radiocarbon ratio ($$Delta$$$$^{14}$$C) of total dissolved inorganic carbon was measured in the Japan Sea, a semi-closed marginal sea in the western North Pacific, where deep and bottom waters are formed in itself. Compiling them with historical radiocarbon data in the Japan Sea, temporal and spatial variations of the radiocarbon in the bottom water below 2000 m depth were elucidated. $$Delta$$$$^{14}$$C in the bottom waters in the western Japan and Yamato Basins increased by about 20 ‰ between 1977/79 and 1995 and did not changed between 1995 and 1999/2000, suggesting penetration of surface bomb-produced radiocarbon into the bottom waters due to bottom ventilation in the earlier period and stagnation of the bottom ventilation in the following period, respectively. In the eastern Japan Basin, the bottom $$Delta$$$$^{14}$$C increased by about 10 ‰ between 1977/79 and 2002, suggesting less ventilation of the bottom water in the basin. The temporal changes of the radiocarbon, tritium, and dissolved oxygen suggest sporadic occurrences of the bottom ventilation between 1979 and 1984 and its stagnation between 1984 and 2004 in the eastern Japan and Yamato Basins. The former is probably due to spreading of a newly ventilated bottom water in the western Japan Basin in the severe winter of 1976-1977 along the abyssal circulation in the Japan Sea. The latter does not conflict with temporal changes of bomb-produced $$^{137}$$Cs and chlorofluorocarbon-11 in the bottom water.

The construction of the Materials and Life Science building was started in the beginning of the fiscal year of 2004. After commissioning of the accelerator and beam transport sections in 2008, muon beams will be available for users in 2009. In this letter, the latest construction status of the J-PARC Muon Science Facility is reported.

With using $$^{17}F$$ RNB from CRIB, proton inelastic scattering was observed. From this experiment, some resonance parameters have been deduced for the key reaction, $$^{14}O(alpha,p)^{17}F$$ at the explosive hydrogen burning stage in stars. Proton inelastic scattering of $$^{23}Mg$$ are also reported.

Electron spectroscopy of doubly excited states in He produced by slow collisions of He$$^{2+}$$ ions with Ba atoms

We measured ejected electron spectra caused by autoionization of doubly excited states in He atoms; the excited He was made by double electron capture of low-energy He$$^{2+}$$ ions colliding with Ba atoms. Measurements were performed by means of zero degree electron spectroscopy at projectile energies from 40 to 20 keV. Electron spectra due to autoionization from the states He(2lnl) to He+(1s) for n$$geq$$2, and those from He(3lnl) to He$$^+$$(2s or 2p) for n$$geq$$3, were observed. Line peaks in the spectra were identified by comparing observed electron spectra with those of several theoretical calculations. It was found that doubly excited states of relatively high angular momenta such as the D and F terms were conspicuously created in a quite different manner from the cases of the production of doubly excited states by the use of photon, electron, or ion impacts on neutral He atoms. Rydberg states with large n values were observed with high population in both the He(2lnl) and He(3lnl) series.

Tungsten deposition distribution in divertor region in JT-60U

Tungsten was mainly deposited on the inner divertor (around the inner strike point) and the outer wing of the dome. Tungsten deposition on the dome was found only near the top surface (within depth of a few micron m), while tungsten on the inner divertor was codeposited with carbon to the depth up to about 60 micron m. Discussion on the relation between depth distribution of tungsten and EDX signals are also presented. Significant difference between tungsten and other metallic materials (Fe, Ni, Cr) in terms of toroidal deposition distribution on the outer wing was observed. Tungsten deposition was toroidally localized in the P-8 section, where tungsten coated tiles were installed. On the other hand, other metallic materials (Fe, Ni, Cr) were not toroidally localized compared with the case of tungsten.
