In the JSFR design, the diameter of the Reactor Vessel (RV) shall be minimized and the reactor internal structures shall be simplified for reduction in construction cost. The reduction in the RV diameter is achieved by adopting an advanced refueling system and the hot RV with high temperature wall. The flow velocity in the reactor upper plenum increases because the diameter of the RV is decreased. As the result, the coolant flow field in reactor upper plenum is severe. The optimization of the coolant flow field in the reactor upper plenum was carried out for prevention the cover gas entrainment and the vortex cavitations at the hot leg intake. In addition, structural integrities for seismic loadings and thermal loadings were evaluated because the design seismic loading was highly increased and the vessel wall is directly exposed to the thermal transients of the upper plenum. This paper describes the characteristics and the results of the design study of the reactor system.

Performance of semiconductor radiation sensors for simple and low-cost radiation detector

Tanimura, Yoshihiko; Birumachi, Atsushi; Yoshida, Makoto; Watanabe, Tamaki*

Radioisotopes, 57(12), p.733 - 738, 2008/12

In order to develop simple but reliable radiation meters for the general public, photon detection performances of radiation sensors have been studied both experimentally in photon calibration fields and by Monte Carlo simulations. A silicon $$_{it p-i-n}$$ photodiode and a CdTe detector were selected for the low-cost sensors. Their energy responses to ambient dose equivalent H$$^*$$(10) were evaluated over the energy range from 60 keV to 2 MeV. The response of the CdTe decreases markedly with increasing photon energy. On the other hand, the photodiode has the advantage of almost flat response above 150 keV. The sensitivities of these sensors are 4 to 6 cpm for the natural radiation. Detection limits of the radiation level are low enough to know the extreme increase of radiation due to emergency situations of nuclear power plants, fuel treatment facilities and so on.

We observed the de Haas-van Alphen oscillation in the heavy fermion compound CeIrIn5. The topology of the Fermi surface is found to be neary cylindrical, reflecting the unique tetragonal structure. Observed branches are well explained by the 4f-itinerant band model. The cyclotron masses are large, 20-30 m0, which are one order larger than the corresponding band masses.
