A SiC nanoparticle ink including polyvinylpyrrolidone and ethylene glycol exhibited intense absorption by SiC nanoparticles at the wavelength of 780 nm. The whole of the sintered film patterns from the surface to the bottom underwent significant oxidation at a scanning speed of 1 mm/s, suggesting that the excessive energy irradiation generated silicon oxides. In contrast, the patterns fabricated by laser scanning at a raster pitch of 30 m at which a sintered area was observed at a scanning speed of 5 mm/s, exhibited no significant difference in oxidation of the raw SiC nanoparticles except for the surfaces from 1.72
m. These results indicate that the irradiation of femtosecond laser pulses generated the sintered SiC patterns without additional atmospheric oxidation of the raw materials because of its low heat accumulation. In additions, the dispersant of polyvinylpyrrolidone and ethylene glycol did not affect the sintering by an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This vacuum-free direct printing technique has the potential for additive manufacturing.

However, no experimental studies on SiC/graphite FGM manufacturing using the spark plasma sintering (SPS) method have been reported. In this study, a SiC/graphite FGM specimen has been fabricated using SPS. The interface between the adjacent layers of the sintered specimen exhibits no apparent defects such as gaps or delaminations. The SiC and graphite phases in the specimen show no substantial change before and after sintering.

In this research program, cladding oxidation model in SFP accident condition, and numerical simulation method to evaluate capability of spray cooling system which was deployed for spent fuel cooling during SFP accident, have been developed. These were introduced into the severe accident codes such as MAAP and SAMPSON, and SFP accident analyses were conducted. Analyses using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code were conducted as well for the comparison with SA code analyses and investigation of detail in the SFP accident. In addition, three-dimensional criticality analysis method was developed as well, and safer loading pattern of spent fuels in pool was investigated.

In this study, CFD analysis has been conducted for the assessment of spent fuel integrity in large LOCA event and the maximum temperature of spent fuel assemblies has been evaluated. Then, it has been compared with the result of the simple assessment method. As a case study, additional CFD analysis has been conducted, where water level in SFP decreases to the Bottom of Active Fuel (BAF) due to boil-off. Since this scenario might be more severe than large LOCA scenario, the number of spent fuel assemblies, their decay heat and loading pattern to maintain spent fuel integrity are investigated.

The high-performance computer system Helios which is located at The Computational Simulation Centre (CSC) in The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) started its operation in January 2012 under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and the EU. The Helios system has been used for magnetised fusion related simulation studies in the EU and Japan and has kept high average usage rate. As a result, the Helios system has contributed to many research products in a wide range of research areas from core plasma physics to reactor material and reactor engineering. This project review gives a short catalogue of domestic simulation research projects. First, we outline the IFERC-CSC project. After that, shown are objectives of the research projects, numerical schemes used in simulation codes, obtained results and necessary computations in future.

In this paper, formation energy of isolated hydrogen atom in CrC
has been theoretically investigated with atomistic calculation based on the density functional theory. The lowest calculated formation energy of a hydrogen atom is -0.48 eV with a trigonal bipyramidal configuration surrounded by five regular Cr lattice atoms. A comparison of the formation energy of hydrogen atom in bcc-iron may indicate that hydrogen atoms in F82H steel are more energetically favorable in Cr
C
-based precipitate rather than Fe-based matrix, leading to an increase of the tritium retention in the precipitate.

LF5 is a task for the remote handling system with the target assembly. JAEA has an idea to use the laser beam for cutting and welding of the lip part of the flanges. As a Japanese activity for the target system, EVEDA Lithium Test Loop simulating hydraulic and impurity conditions of IFMIF is under design and preparation for fabrication. Feasibility of thermo-mechanical structure of the target assembly and the replaceable back-plate made of F82H (a RAFM) and 316L (a stainless steel) is a key issue. Toward final validation on the EVEDA loop, diagnostics applicable to a high-speed free-surface Li flow and hot traps to control nitrogen and hydrogen in Li are under tests. For remote handling of target assemblies and the replaceable back-plates activated up to 50 dpa/y, lip weld on 316L-316L by laser and dissimilar weld on F82H-316L are under investigation. As engineering design of the IFMIF target system, water experiments and hydraulic/thermo-mechanical analyses of the back-plate are going.

Toward the commercialization of fast reactors, a design study of Japan Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (JSFR) is being performed, in which fully natural circulation system is adopted as the decay heat removal system. A new evaluation method of core hot spot which can be applied to natural circulation decay heat removal has been developed. The new method consists of three-step thermal hydraulics analyses in order to consider the effects of physical phenomena particular to natural circulation, such as inter-fuel-assembly heat transfer and flow redistribution in the core due to buoyancy force. From the viewpoint of calculation cost reduction, we have also developed a simplified model substituting for the third step analysis (subchannel analysis). The new method was applied to the evaluations of a loss-of-external-power event and of a sodium leakage accident in a secondary loop of a large scale reactor.

The system will allow simultaneous imaging at high spatial and energy resolutions across a wide energy range, from several tens of keV to a few MeV. In this work, one prototype head module have been developed for a multi-head Si/CdTe Compton camera system. The performance of the prototype was evaluated with a sealed Ba-133 radiation source. The experiments confirmed that the imaging results were consistent with actual source position. In addition to the resolution for the parallel directions to the detector surface, the position resolution was evaluated for the depth direction at a point in near region of the head-module. These position resolutions were well reproduced by Monte Carlo simulation results.
