An Introduction to ecosystem services for radiological protection

Annals of the ICRP, 52, p.240 - 248, 2024/00

This paper provides an overview of ecosystem services and an introduction to the ongoing work of ICRP Task Group 125. The mandate of the recently formed ICRP Task Group 125 is to explore and share knowledge on ecosystem services by providing background and general recommendations on how ecosystem services can support a holistic approach to environmental radiological protection (ERP) and, as specifically relevant to ERP, explore how the system of radiological protection contributes to the delivery of sustainable development. ICRP is considering the potential for ES to be useful in RP in support of a more robust approach to ERP.

Bees are a widely-distributed insect family which provide ecosystem services (ES) such as pollination, production of honey and beeswax, and desirable aesthetic inspiration. They directly contribute to maintenance of biodiversity in wild habitats and human well-being through provision of these various ES. We, ICRP TG125 describes how including the impacts of radiological contamination and associated decision-making on bees and their ES has the potential to improve radiological protection through adoption of a One Health perspective, enhanced stakeholder engagement, and improved decision-making. We provide specific case studies demonstrating how to conceptually apply the ES approach for different exposure scenarios (e.g., existing and planned) using bees as a model species.
