Beam commissioning of muon beamline using negative hydrogen ions generated by ultraviolet light

A muon linac is under development for the precise measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment ($$g$$-2) and electric dipole moment (EDM) with a reaccelerated thermal muon beam. An H$$^-$$ source driven by an ultraviolet light has been developed for the muon acceleration experiment. Prior to the acceleration experiment, a beamline commissioning was performed using this H$$^-$$ beam, since the accelerated muon intensity is very low. We successfully measured the magnetic rigidity, which is essential for identifying the accelerated muons. This H$$^-$$ source is capable of utilizing as a general-purpose beam source for other beamline.

A beam profile monitor (BPM) based on a microchannel plate has been developed for muon beams with low transverse momentum for the measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment and electric dipole moment at high precision, with capability of diagnosing muon beams of kinetic energy range from a few keV to 4 MeV. The performance of the BPM has been evaluated using a surface muon beam at J-PARC and additionally with an ultraviolet (UV) light source. It has been confirmed that the BPM has a dynamic range from a few to 10$$^4$$ muons per bunch without saturation. The spatial resolution of the BPM has been estimated to be less than 0.30 mm. The positron background from muon decays is an obstacle in muon beam profile monitoring and a partial discrimination of the positrons has been achieved under discrete particle conditions.

We report first STM observation of the Li$$^{+}$$ ion endohedral C$$_{60}$$, which is of a new class of endohedral fullerenes, prepared by means of evaporation of high-purity Li$$^{+}$$@C$$_{60}$$[PF$$_{6}$$$$^{-}$$] salt in ultra-high vacuum. Prior to the STM measurements, the electronic structure of Li$$^{+}$$@C$$_{60}$$ in the Li$$^{+}$$@C$$_{60}$$[PF$$_{6}$$$$^{-}$$] salt was also precisely determined. In the salt, it is shown that Li and PF$$_{6}$$ have nearly single positive and negative charge, respectively, and the C$$_{60}$$ cage is nearly neutral, suggesting that Li$$^{+}$$@C$$_{60}$$ in the salt retains its original electronic state.

Muons have been accelerated by using a radio-frequency accelerator for the first time. Negative muonium atoms (Mu$$^{-}$$), which are bound states of positive muons and two electrons, are generated from through the electron capture process in an aluminum degrader. The generated Mu$$^{-}$$'s are initially electrostatically accelerated and injected into a radio-frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ). In the RFQ, the Mu$$^{-}$$'s are accelerated to 89 keV. The accelerated Mu$$^{-}$$'s are identified by momentum measurement and time of flight. This compact muon linac opens the door to various muon accelerator applications including particle physics measurements and the construction of a transmission muon microscope.

We report on the event structure and double helicity asymmetry ($$A_{LL}$$) of jet production in longitudinally polarized $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. Photons and charged particles were measured by the PHENIX experiment. Event structure was compared with the results from PYTHIA event generator. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. We measured $$A_{LL}$$ = -0.0014 $$pm$$ 0.0037 at the lowest $$P_T$$ bin and -0.0181 $$pm$$ 0.0282 at the highest $$P_T$$ bin. The measured $$A_{LL}$$ is compared with the predictions that assume various $$Delta G(x)$$ distributions.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the invariant differential cross section for production of $$K^0_s$$, $$omega$$, $$eta'$$ and $$phi$$ mesons in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, $$n$$ and $$T$$, determining the high $$p_T$$ and characterizing the low $$p_T$$ regions for the spectra, respectively. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

Because the 2010 operation of Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) mainly aims to achieve strongly elongated and diverted plasma, all the necessary hardware systems to provide an essential circumstance for the plasma shaping were newly installed and upgraded in 2010. In this paper, general configuration of the upgraded systems described earlier will be outlined. Moreover, several key performances and test results of the systems will be also reported in summary.

Direct observation of dispersive Kondo resonance peaks in a heavy-fermion system

Ce 4$$d$$-4$$f$$ resonant angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy was carried out to study the electronic structure of strongly correlated Ce 4$$f$$ electrons in a quasi-two-dimensional nonmagnetic heavy-fermion system CeCoGe$$_{1.2}$$Si$$_{0.8}$$. For the first time, dispersive coherent peaks of an $$f$$ state crossing the Fermi level, the so-called Kondo resonance, are directly observed together with the hybridized conduction band. Moreover, the experimental band dispersion is quantitatively in good agreement with a simple hybridization-band picture based on the periodic Anderson model. The obtained physical quantities, i.e., coherent temperature, Kondo temperature, and mass enhancement, are comparable to the results of thermodynamic measurements. These results manifest an itinerant nature of Ce 4$$f$$ electrons in heavy-fermion systems and clarify their microscopic hybridization mechanism.

Survey on experiences and needs for sharing nonproliferation-relevant information among experts within JAEA

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is carrying out a project to design and establish an Information Sharing Framework (ISF) for enhancing nuclear transparency in the Asia Pacific region. This project is a cooperative effort with Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), the Korean Institute for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control (KINAC), and Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). In order to design and establish the ISF as a meaningful and sustainable mechanism, it is essential to identify the needs of the potential aparticipants including their expectations and concerns. Therefore partner organizations have conducted on-line surveys and/or face-to-face interviews with the nonproliferation experts within their own organizations that were identified as primary participants of ISF. JAEA carried out several face-to-face interviews with its experts including those who are in charge of nonproliferation R&D, nuclear security implementation coordinator, and training for capacity building and infrastructure development. They were queried as to past experiences and future needs for information exchanges. The survey results indicated that there are various experiences of information sharing in each nonproliferation mission or activity, and there continues to be a need for further information sharing. Findings from the survey will be reflected to the establishment and demonstration of ISF.

Development of information sharing requirements for regional nuclear transparency

Nuclear transparency has been discussed in various contexts even within nuclear nonproliferation. Due to the wide range of the contexts, the similar discussions have been repeated. With this background, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), US Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), Korean Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control (KINAC), and Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) initiated a new phase of study to develop "requirements" for information sharing framework (ISF) focusing on regional nonproliferation experts. The "requirements" in this study is defined as to implement Plan-Do-Check-Adjust (PDCA) cycle for each specific category of information to be shared. "Plan" should be made by defining seven essential elements of ISF. In "Do" stage, the participants will collect the information and initiate a sharing process. "Check" is to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the ISF using the metrics and methodologies identified in "Plan". The feedback obtained from the "Check" will be reflected to the "Plan" for the second cycle, then the second cycle will be implemented. Because the nuclear transparency is a voluntary process, sustainability is a key challenge. "Requirements" were developed so that if the planning and implementation of ISF is carried out following the "requirements", ISF can automatically work in a sustainable and useful manner. This paper addresses the requirements for ISF that were developed by JAEA, SNL, KINAC, and KAERI, and demonstrates how they can work with showing the example planning.
