Tunnel excavation analysis of siliceous mudstone using a damage model

When the durability of the geological repository of high-level radioactive waste is evaluated, understanding the cracking behavior within the crystalline/sedimentary rocks during excavation of waste disposal cavities is important. In this study, we performed a numerical analysis that expressed the tunnel excavation carried out 350 m underground at the Horonobe Underground Research Center of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Simulated results are agreement with actual trends of fracture propagation, and the measured horizontal convergence of the tunnel was reproduced by the numerical analysis relatively well.

The researches on examination of the plug applied to the future reflood test was conducted as a part of (5) development of technologies for restoration and/on reduction of the excavation damage relating to the engineering technology in the MIU (2014), specifically focused on (1) plug examination (e.g. functions, structure and material) and the quality control methods and (2) analytical evaluation of rock mass behavior around the plug through the reflood test. As the result, specifications of the plug were determined. These specifications should be able to meet requirements for the safety structure and surrounding rock mass against predicted maximum water pressure, temperature stress and seismic force, and for controlling the groundwater inflow, ensuring the access into the reflood gallery and the penetration performance of measurement cable. Also preliminary knowledge regarding the rock mass behavior around the plug after flooding the reflood gallery by installed plug was obtained.

The high-performance computer system Helios which is located at The Computational Simulation Centre (CSC) in The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) started its operation in January 2012 under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and the EU. The Helios system has been used for magnetised fusion related simulation studies in the EU and Japan and has kept high average usage rate. As a result, the Helios system has contributed to many research products in a wide range of research areas from core plasma physics to reactor material and reactor engineering. This project review gives a short catalogue of domestic simulation research projects. First, we outline the IFERC-CSC project. After that, shown are objectives of the research projects, numerical schemes used in simulation codes, obtained results and necessary computations in future.

Precise determination of $$^{12}_{Lambda}$$C level structure by $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy

Level structure of the $$^{12}_{Lambda}$$C hypernucleus was precisely determined by means of $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy. We identified four $$gamma$$-ray transitions via the $$^{12}$$C$$(pi^{+},K^{+}gamma)$$ reaction using a germanium detector array, Hyperball2. The spacing of the ground-state doublet $$(2^{-}, 1^{-}_{1})$$ was measured to be $$161.5pm0.3$$(stat)$$pm0.3$$ (syst)keV from the direct $$M1$$ transition. Excitation energies of the $$1^{-}_{2}$$ and $$1^{-}_{3}$$ states were measured to be $$2832pm3pm4$$, keV and $$6050pm8pm7$$, keV, respectively. The obtained level energies provide definitive references for the reaction spectroscopy of $$Lambda$$ hypernuclei.

The researches on engineering technology in the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) project consists of (1) development of design and construction planning technologies, (2) development of construction technology, (3) development of countermeasure technology, (4) development of technology for security, and (5) development of technologies for restoration and/or reduction of the excavation damage. The researches on engineering technology such as verification of the initial design were being conducted by using data measured during construction as a part of the second phase of the MIU plan. Examination about the plug for reflood test in the GL-500m Access/Research Gallery-North as part of the development of technologies for restoration and/or reduction of excavation damage were carried out. Specifically, Literature survey was carried out about the plug, based on the result of literature survey, examination of the design condition, design of the plug and rock stability using numerical simulation, selection of materials for major parts, and grouting for water inflow from between rock and plug, were carried out in this study.

Ab initio path integral molecular dynamics simulations of F$$_2$$H$$^-$$ and F$$_2$$H$$_3^+$$

The quantum nature of the strong hydrogen bonds for the F$$_2$$H$$^-$$ and F$$_2$$H$$_3^+$$ ions and their deuterated isotopomers at the room temperature has been studied using ab initio path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) simulations. It is found that, for both of these ions, the hydrogen-bonded H/D atoms largely fluctuate around the central position of two F atoms. The average FH/FF distances of F$$_2$$H$$^-$$ and F$$_2$$H$$_3^+$$ are longer than the average FD/FF distances of F$$_{2}$$D$$^{-}$$ and F$$_2$$H$$_3^+$$ due to the primary/secondary isotope effects, which stem from the difference of the quantum nature of H and D nuclei. These results are compared with the family of Zundel-type ions, O$$_2$$H$$_3^-$$, N$$_2$$H$$_5^-$$, O$$_2$$H$$_5^+$$, and N$$_2$$H$$_7^+$$, which have been studied previously with the same ab initio PIMD approach. A comparison is also made with the previous experimental and ab initio vibrational configuration interaction results of F$$_2$$H$$^-$$.

Continuous running test of radiation resistance motor driving equipment under high gamma ray irradiation

The components in the vacuum vessel of ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor), e.g. blanket and divertor, are replaced using the dedicated remote handling systems. The environment conditions inside the vacuum vessel during the operation are temperature of 50$$^{circ}$$C, gamma ray radiation and air or inert gas atmosphere at 1 atm. ; therefore multiple elements are required as durability of the remote handling systems. In addition, the remote handling system it is desired to be able to operate over a long time. The radiation resistance motor driving equipment, which comprises parts with different radiation resistance levels, was designed simulating mechanisms of the ITER remote handling systems. The equipment being the servomotor, turns the weight (dummy load) of 8 kgf and controls, and continuous running test under high gamma ray irradiation was started from March, 2000. Irradiation conditions on the test were the dose rate of 3.6 kGy/h, the target accumulation dose of 30 MGy at the minimum. The irradiation test was performed two stages which was divided by overhaul of the equipment. The achieved accumulation dose and running time in these stages were approximately 47.6 MGy/13,200 hours and 23.9 MGy/6,640 hours, respectively. As a result, it has been confirmed that sufficient radiation resistance of the equipment, which is required from the latest dose rate of 0.5 kGy/h inside the vacuum vessel was achieved. In this report, we describe design conditions of the equipment and the results of the 1st and 2nd irradiation tests and the overhaul after the 1st irradiation test.

The dominant issue for the the modification program of JT-60 (JT-60SC) is to demonstrate the steady state reactor relevant plasma operation. Physics design on plasma parameters, operation scenarios, and the plasma control method are investigated for the achievement of high-$$beta$$. Engineering design and the R&D on the superconducting magnet coils, radiation shield, and vacuum vessel are performed. Recent progress in such physics and technology developments is presented.

Synthesis of rare earth complexes using minor actinides separation reagent TPEN and derivatives

In this study, we synthesized Eu(III) complex using N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-ethylenediamine (TPEN) and TPEN derivatives, N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-propylenediamine(MeTPEN) which has methyl group into the ethylenediamine framework, the structure and physical properties of these complexes investigated. The crystal structure of Eu(TPEN) and Eu(MeTPEN), the geometry of these structures indicate pseudo-bicapped square antiprism (10 coordination) with two bidentate NO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$; ions. As the result of investigation of fluorescence spectrum and lifetime in organic solution, the fluorescence of Eu (MeTPEN) was enhanced more intensity than that of Eu(TPEN) by addition of OAc$$^{-}$$; ion.
