The France and Japan teams have carried out collaborative works to have common technical views regarding a sodium-cooled fast reactor concept. Japan has studied the feasibility of an enhanced high burnup low-void effect (CFV) core and fuel using oxide dispersion-strengthened steel cladding in ASTRID 600. Regarding passive shutdown capabilities, Japan team has performed a preliminary numerical analysis for ASTRID 600 using a complementary safety device, called a self-actuated shutdown system (SASS), one of the safety approaches of Japan. The mitigation measures of ASTRID 600 against a severe accident, such as a core catcher, molten corium discharge assembly, and the sodium void reactivity features of the CFV core, are promising to achieve in-vessel retention for both countries. The common design concept based on ASTRID 600 is feasible to demonstrate the SFR core and safety technologies for both countries.

We have already succeeded in the residual stress of aluminum alloys using the double exposure method (DEM) with 30 keV synchrotron radiation X-rays. However, the DEM has not be applied in the range of high-energy synchrotron X-rays. In this study, the stress measurements of a shrink-fitted ring using the DEM with synchrotron monochromatic X-rays beyond about 70 keV were performed. A CdTe pixel detector and a CCD camera were used as a detector. The shrink-fitted specimen of SUS304 was quasi-coarse grains of 43 micro-meters, and the diffraction rings were spotty. Despite quasi-coarse grains, it was possible to measure the stresses of the shrink-fitted specimen using the DEM. As a result, the DEM is excellent method to measures the stress for coarse grained materials. In addition, it is better to make the length between the detection positions longer to improve precision of the DEM. On the other hand, it was ineffective to increase the positions of detection.

The automotive industries employ laser beam welding because it realizes a high energy density without generating irradiation marks on the opposite side of the irradiated surface. Typical measurement techniques such as strain gauges and tube X-rays cannot assess the localized strain at a joint weld. Herein high-energy synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction was used to study the internal strain distribution of laser lap joint PNC-FMS steels (2- and 5-mm thick) under loading at a high temperature. As the tensile load increased, the local tensile and compressive strains increased near the interface. These changes agreed well with the finite element analysis results. However, it is essential to complementarily utilize internal defect observations by X-ray transmission imaging because the results depend on the defects generated by laser processing.

France (CEA and FRAMATOME) and Japan (JAEA, MHI and MFBR) have carried out studies to establish a common technical view regarding sodium-cooled fast reactor concept. Japan and France performed a common work to examine ways to develop a feasible common design concept, which could be built both in France and/or in Japan. This paper is providing a review of this joint synthesis on Sodium Fast Reactor design concept.

In addition to the CA-GMRES, we implement and evaluate a modified variant of CA-GMRES (M-CA-GMRES) proposed in our previous study to reduce the amount of floating-point calculations. This study demonstrates that beneficial features of the CA-GMRES are in its minimum number of collective communications and its highly efficient calculations based on dense matrix-matrix operations. The performance evaluation is conducted on the Reedbush-L GPU cluster, which contains four NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPUs per compute node. The evaluation results show that the M-CA-GMRES is 1.09x, 1.22x and 1.50x faster than the CA-GMRES, the generalized conjugate residual method (GCR), and the GMRES, respectively, when 64 GPUs are used.

The P-CBCG method reduces the number of collective communications with keeping the robustness of convergence properties. Compared with the P-CACG method, an order of magnitude larger communication-avoiding steps are enabled by the improved robustness. It is shown that the P-CBCG method is and
faster than the P-CG and P-CACG methods at 2,000 processors, respectively.

A communication-avoiding generalized minimal residual (CA-GMRES) method is applied to the gyrokinetic toroidal five dimensional Eulerian code GT5D, and its performance is compared against the original code with a generalized conjugate residual (GCR) method on the JAEA ICEX (Haswell), the Plasma Simulator (FX100), and the Oakforest-PACS (KNL). The CA-GMRES method has higher arithmetic intensity than the GCR method, and thus, is suitable for future Exa-scale architectures with limited memory and network bandwidths. In the performance evaluation, it is shown that compared with the GCR solver, its computing kernels are accelerated by
, and the cost of data reduction communication is reduced from
to
of the total cost at 1,280 nodes.

This paper describes an analysis study on the initiating phase of the ATWS events with SAS4A in order to confirm the appropriateness of the core design for the medium-scale SFR (750MWe-1765MWt). Not using a conventional lumping method that multiple fuel sub-assemblies having a similar characteristic were assigned to one channel (representing fuel assembly in SAS4A), each channel represents only the sub-assemblies of identical operating condition. In addition, the detailed power and reactivity distribution were set reflecting the change of insertion position of control rods. Applying these detailed analysis conditions, the SAS4A analyses were performed for unprotected loss-of-flow (ULOF) and unprotected transient overpower (UTOP) during both of the nominal power and the partial power operation. As a result, more proper event progression including incoherency of events especially fuel dispersion after fuel failure was successfully evaluated and then this analysis study suggested that the power excursion with prompt criticality leading to large mechanical energy release can be prevented in the initiating phase of the current design.

A self-actuated shutdown system (SASS) is a passive device, which can detach a control rod for reactor shutdown in response to excessive increase in coolant temperature. Since a detachment temperature, which triggers release of a control rod, and a response time are identified as important parameters for validity analyses, this study focused on investigation of the response time and the detachment temperature, and safety analysis to see feasibility of the SASS in low power. For this purpose, design modifications were made to shorten the response time and three-dimensional thermal-hydraulic analysis in a low power operation was carried out in order to confirm the response time. The resulting detachment temperature level is lower than previous studies, leading to improved safety parameters. Based on improved parameters, a safety analysis to see feasibility of the SASS in low power was carried out. From this safety evaluation, it was confirmed that core damage can be prevented by the SASS with flow collector in the case of LOF type ATWS event.

The left-preconditioned communication avoiding conjugate gradient (LP-CA-CG) method is applied to the pressure Poisson equation in the multiphase CFD code JUPITER. The arithmetic intensity of the LP-CA-CG method is analyzed, and is dramatically improved by loop splitting for inner product operations and for three term recurrence operations. Two LP-CA-CG solvers with block Jacobi preconditioning and with underlap preconditioning are developed. It is shown that on the K computer, the LP-CA-CG solvers with block Jacobi preconditioning is faster, because the performance of local point-to-point communications scales well, and the convergence property becomes worse with underlap preconditioning. The LP-CA-CG solver shows good strong scaling up to 30,000 nodes, where the LP-CA-CG solver achieved higher performance than the original CG solver by reducing the cost of global collective communications by 69%.

After the accident at Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant, various numerical criteria relevant to radiation protection were defined. We surveyed these criteria through internet. As a result of survey, the following 13 items were identified: (1) criteria for taking stable iodine tablets, (2) criteria for the screening of surface contamination, (3) evacuation area, sheltering area, etc., (4) activity concentrations in food, drinking water, etc., (5) dose limit for radiation workers engaged in emergency work, (6) guideline levels of radioactive substances in bathing areas, (7) criteria for use of school buildings and schoolyards, (8) restriction on planting rice, (9) acceptable activity concentrations in feedstuff, (10) acceptable activity concentrations in compost, (11) criteria for export containers and ships, (12) criteria for contaminated waste, (13) standards for radiation workers engaged in decontamination work. In this report, the basis of and issues on these criteria are summarized.
