Thermal conductivity measurement of uranium-plutonium mixed oxide doped with Nd/Sm as simulated fission products

The thermal conductivities of near-stoichiometric (U,Pu,Am)O$$_{2}$$ doped with Nd$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$/Sm$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$, which is major fission product (FP) generated by a uranium-plutonium mixed oxides (MOX) fuel irradiation, as simulated fission products are evaluated at 1073-1673 K. The thermal conductivities are calculated from the thermal diffusivities that are measured using the laser flash method. To evaluate the thermal conductivity from a homogeneity viewpoint of Nd/Sm cations in MOX, the specimens with different homogeneity of Nd/Sm are prepared using two kinds of powder made by ball-mill and fusion methods. A homogeneous Nd/Sm distribution decreases the thermal conductivity of MOX with increasing Nd/Sm content, whereas heterogeneous Nd/Sm has no influence. The effect of Nd/Sm on the thermal conductivity is studied using the classical phonon transport model (A+BT)$$^{-1}$$. The dependences of the coefficients A and B on the Nd/Sm content (C$$_{Nd}$$ and C$$_{Sm}$$, respectively) are evaluated as: A(mK/W)=1.70 $$times$$ 10$$^{-2}$$ + 0.93C$$_{Nd}$$ + 1.20C$$_{Sm}$$, B(m/W)=2.39 $$times$$ 10$$^{-4}$$.

Immersion of graphene in KOH solution improves its mobility on SiO$$_{2}$$/Si wafers. This is thought to be due to electron doping by modification with K atoms, but the K atom concentration C$$_{K}$$ in the graphene has not been clarified yet. In this study, the C$$_{K}$$ was determined by XPS analysis using high-brilliance synchrotron radiation. The time evolution of C$$_{K}$$ was determined by real-time observation, and the C$$_{K}$$ before irradiation of synchrotron radiation was estimated to be 0.94%. The C 1s spectrum shifted to the low binding energy side with the desorption of K atoms. This indicates that the electron doping concentration into graphene is decreasing, and it is experimentally confirmed that K atoms inject electrons into graphene.

Late-Holocene salinity changes in Lake Ogawara, Pacific coast of northeast Japan, related to sea-level fall inferred from sedimentary geochemical signatures

Radiocarbon dating, tephrochronology, and geochemical signatures such as bromine (Br), iodine (I), total sulfur (TS), total organic carbon (TOC), and total nitrogen (TN) in a continuous sediment core (OG12-2) were applied to estimate past salinity change on the Lake Ogawara, Pacific coast of northeast Japan. Since the Lake Ogawara was the inner bay of the Pacific Ocean and became the brackish lake in the late Holocene, clarifying the past salinity change on the lake Ogawara could give us important insight into the past sea level changes of the Pacific Ocean. The core OG12-2 has two tephra layers, the Towada eruption and the Changbaishan eruption (B-Tm: AD 946). The age model for the core OG12-2 was established using the radiocarbon measurements of the plant residues in the core, also was constrained by the B-Tm tephra. Depletions of marine-derived elements (Br, I, and TS), from 88.4 to 64.2 mg/kg, 20.0 to 14.1 mg/kg, and 3.1 to 1.1 mass %, respectively, were observed in the layers with 2200-2000 cal BP. These results indicate paleosalinity changes from saline (inner bay) to brackish conditions within Lake Ogawara caused by sea level fluctuations during the late Holocene.

The biological effects of low dose-rate radiation exposures on humans remains unknown. In fact, the Japanese nation still struggles with this issue after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Recently, we have found a unique area in Indonesia where naturally high radiation levels are present, resulting in chronic low dose-rate radiation exposures. We aimed to estimate the comprehensive dose due to internal and external exposures at the particularly high natural radiation area, and to discuss the enhancement mechanism of radon. A car-borne survey was conducted to estimate the external doses from terrestrial radiation. Indoor radon measurements were made in 47 dwellings over three to five months, covering the two typical seasons, to estimate the internal doses. Atmospheric radon gases were simultaneously collected at several heights to evaluate the vertical distribution. The absorbed dose rates in air in the study area vary widely between 50 nGy h$$^{-1}$$ and 1109 nGy h$$^{-1}$$. Indoor radon concentrations ranged from 124 Bq m$$^{-3}$$ to 1015 Bq m$$^{-3}$$. That is, the indoor radon concentrations measured exceed the reference levels of 100 Bq m$$^{-3}$$ recommended by the World Health Organization. Furthermore, the outdoor radon concentrations measured were comparable to the high indoor radon concentrations. The annual effective dose due to external and internal exposures in the study area was estimated to be 27 mSv using the median values. It was found that many residents are receiving radiation exposure from natural radionuclides over the dose limit for occupational exposure to radiation workers. This enhanced outdoor radon concentration might be as a result of the stable atmospheric conditions generated at an exceptionally low altitude. Our findings suggest that this area provides a unique opportunity to conduct an epidemiological study related to health effects due to chronic low dose-rate radiation exposure.

The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

The anion-exchange membranes (AEM) for fuel cells were prepared by the radiation-induced graft polymerization of chloromethylstyrene into poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE) films and subsequent quaternization of the grafts with trimethylamine. When the AEM were treated in 1M-KOH and washed with N$$_{2}$$-saturated water, the membranes with chloride form can be converted quantitatively to hydroxide form. However, the hydroxide form was easily converted to the bicarbonate form by the treatment in non-bubbled (CO$$_{2}$$ dissolved) water. When we introduced the crosslinkers in polymer grafts, which is proved to be very effective in the proton conducting PEM having a poly(styrenesulfonic acid) grafts, the grafted AEM with both chloride and hydroxide forms showed only slight decrease of water uptake. It should be noted that AEM with hydroxide form showed very high tendency to absorb water.

Relationship between hypocentral distribution and geological structure in the Horonobe area, northern Hokkaido, Japan

In this paper, we discuss the relationship between the accurate hypocentral distribution and 3-D geological structure in and around the Horonobe area, Japan. We carried out multiplet-clustering analysis by using data of the 421 micro-earthquakes which occurred from 1st September, 2003 to 30th September, 2007. The 3-D geological structure model was mainly constructed from previous seismic reflection profiles and drilling data. As a result of this analysis, although there are some differences in depth between them, the hypocenters are distributed in NNW-SSE direction and become deeper from the west toward the east. The distributed pattern of the hypocenters is similar to the one of the geological structure. These results indicate that the hypocentral distribution may represent existence of active zone related to the geological structure, and provide effective information which can contribute to establishing methods for estimating the future evolution of the geological environment.

An ${it in situ}$ experimental technique was developed for detecting structure changes at the electrode/electrolyte interface of lithium cell using synchrotron X-ray reflectometry and two-dimensional model electrodes with a restricted lattice plane. The electrode was constructed with an epitaxial film of LiNi$$_{0.8}$$Co$$_{0.2}$$O$$_{2}$$ synthesized by the pulsed laser deposition method. These films provided an ideal reaction field suitable for detecting structure changes at the electrode/electrolyte interface during the electrochemical reaction. The X-ray reflectometry indicated a formation of a thin-film layer at the LiNi$$_{0.8}$$Co$$_{0.2}$$O$$_{2}$$ (1 1 0)/electrolyte interface during the first charge-discharge cycle, while the LiNi$$_{0.8}$$Co$$_{0.2}$$O$$_{2}$$ (0 0 3) surface showed an increase in the surface roughness without forming the surface thin-film layer.

Single crystals of LaIrSi$$_3$$ and CeIrSi$$_3$$ were grown by the Czochralski pulling method in a tetra-arc furnace and the magnetic and superconducting properties, together with super- conductivity in CeIr$$_{1-x}$$Co$$_x$$Si$$_3$$, were clarified by measuring the electrical resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect. From the results of the dHvA experiment for LaIrSi$$_3$$, the Fermi surface is found to split into two Fermi surfaces due to the spin-orbit interaction arising from the non-centrosymmetric crystal structure. The electronic state of CeIrSi$$_3$$ is tuned from the antiferro- magnetic state to the superconducting state by applying pressure. The upper critical field H$$_{c2}$$(0) at a pressure of 2.65 GPa is found to be highly anisotropic. Large magnitude and anisotropy of H$$_{c2}$$(0) in CeIrSi$$_3$$ are consistent with the theoretical prediction for superconductivity in the non-centrosymmetric crystal structure.

High intensity chopper spectrometer 4SEASONS at J-PARC

We are developing a new chopper-type neutron inelastic spectrometer 4SEASONS for the spallation neutron source at J-PARC. This spectrometer has middle energy resolution and two orders higher efficiency than the ones at ISIS for a single crystal measurement. With this spectrometer, we try to explore novel quantum phenomena, in particular, the mechanism of the high-$$T_c$$ superconductivity. The high flux at a sample is achieved by incorporating the well designed transport devices in addition to the high flux of the source. The energy resolution is estimated to be 5-6% at $$hbaromega$$ = 0. Furthermore, the most distinguishing feature of 4SEASONS is the availability of the repetition rate multiplication (RRM) method. The RRM method enables us to utilize many $$E_i$$'s at the same time, which will increase the efficiency of the measurement more than five times and make the survey of 4D space of $$mathbf{Q}$$-$$omega$$ much easier.

We succeeded in growing a single crystal of Ce$$_2$$Pd$$_3$$Si$$_5$$ with the orthorhombic crystal structure by the Sn-flux method and measured the electrical resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization. The antiferromagnetic ordering was confirmed to be $$T_{rm N}$$ = 7.2 K. The electronic specific heat coefficient was determined as 77 mJ/K$$^2cdot$$mol$$cdot$$Ce. The antiferromagnetic easy-axis was found to be the [001] direction, with an ordered moment of $$mu_{rm s}$$ = 1.3 $$mu_{rm B}$$/Ce, while [100] and [010] directions are hard-axes in magnetization. We observed a metamagnetic transition at 5.7 T for $$Hparallel$$[001] and a saturation of magnetization above 12.1 T. The characteristic magnetic phase diagram was constructed. The crystalline electric field (CEF) scheme was proposed for Ce$$_2$$Pd$$_3$$Si$$_5$$, where the splitting energies between the ground state and two excited doublets in the CEF scheme are estimated to be 87 K and 504 K, respectively.

A research project entitled "Development of the 4D Space Access Neutron Spectrometer (4SEASONS) and Elucidation of the Mechanism of Oxide High-$$T_c$$ Superconductivity" has started in 2005 (repr. by M. Arai). It is supported by MEXT, Grant-in-Aid for Specially Promoted Research and is going to last until fiscal 2009. The goal of the project is to elucidate the mechanism of oxide high-$$T_c$$ superconductivity by neutron scattering technique. For this purpose, we will develop an inelastic neutron scattering instrument 4SEASONS (4d SpacE AccesS neutrON Spectrometer) for the spallation neutron source in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The instrument will have 100 times higher performance than existing world-class instruments, and will enable detailed observation of anomalous magnetic excitations and phonons in a four-dimensional momentum-energy space. This report summarizes the progress in the research project in fiscal 2007.

Pressure-induced heavy-fermion superconductivity in antiferromagnet CeIrSi$$_3$$ without inversion symmetry

We report the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in an antiferromagnet CeIrSi$$_3$$, which lacks inversion symmetry in the tetragonal crystal structure. The Neel temperature $$T_N$$ = 5.0 K at ambient pressure decreases monotonically with increasing pressure, and becomes zero at about 2.5 GPa. Superconductivity appears in a wide pressure region from 1.8 GPa to about 3.5 GPa, with a relatively large superconduting transition temperature Tsc= 1.6 K and a large upper critical field $$H_{c2}$$(0) = 11.1 T at 2.5 GPa, indicating heavy-fermion superconductivity.
