The Center for Promotion of Computational Science and Engineering of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute has carried out the ITBL (Information-Technology Based Laboratory) project which is one of e-Japan priority policy programs. AVS/ITBL is the visualization tool which has been developed aiming at realizing the efficient visualization in the ITBL environment. This visualization tool is one of the tools of ITBL infrastructure software and operates in cooperation with AVS/Express. In this paper, utilization of AVS/ITBL to the numerical environmental system, which is one of the applications in ITBL project, is presented. And the outline of the operation in this utilization is indicated.

Information-Technology Based Laboratory (ITBL) project has been propelled as one of e-Japan priority policy programs. The purposes of the project are to share intellectual resources such as remote computers, programs and data in universities and institutes and to support cooperative studies among researchers, building a virtual research environment, ITBL. Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) has been working on installation and management of hardware and development of infrastructure software and applications. As application software, researches on quantum bioinformatics and environmental sciences are carried out. This paper presents utilization of ITBL system infra-structure software for 'Numerical Environment System' which is developed for environmental studies. More effective job executions and visualization are ex-pected by using Task Mapping Editor (TME) and AVS/ITBL, which are tools developed as infrastructure software.

Prototype of the middleware for Grid project promoted by national institutes in Japan has been developed. Key technologies that are indispensable for construction of virtual organization were already implemented onto the prototype of middleware and examined in practical computer/network system from a view point of availability. In addition several kinds of scientific applications are being executed on the prototype system. It seems that successful result in the implementation of those technologies such as security infrastructure, component programming and collaborative visualization in practical computer/network systems means significant progress in Science Grid in Japan.

An MPI library for heterogeneous computing environment, Stampi, has been implemented on an SCore cluster system to enable dynamic process creation defined in MPI-2 and MPI communication among multiple clusters. Objective of this implementation is realization of heterogeneous computing environment with an SCore PC cluster and other machines. Through performance measurement, sufficient performance has been achieved and effectiveness of our flexible implementation has been confirmed.

An experimental application of Grid computing was executed in ITBL project promoted by six member institutes of MEXT. Key technologies that are indispensable for construction of virtual organization were implemented onto ITBL Middleware and examined in the experiment from a view point of availability. It seems that successful result in the implementation and examination of those technologies such as security infrastructure, component programming and collaborative visualization in practical computer/network systems means significant progress in Science Grid in Japan.

SCore system has been developed to provide flat computing infrastructure for parallel computing without awareness of each compute host in a PC cluster system. An SCore cluster system can be handled as a single computer. MPICH-SCore, which is an MPI library in SCore, is not available across multiple SCore cluster systems as well as multiple platforms. We have implemented an MPI communication library, Stampi in SCore cluster system to enable MPI communication between SCore cluster systems and measured communication performance of the library using SCore cluster systems.

An MPI-2 based parallel-I/O library, Stampi-I/O, has been developed using flexible communication infrastructure. In Stampi-I/O almost all MPI-I/O functions have been implemented. We can execute these functions using both local and remote I/O operations with the same application program interface (API) based on MPI-2. In I/O operations using Stampi-I/O, users need not handle any differences in the communication mechanism of computers. We have evaluated performance for primitive functions in Stampi-I/O. Through this test, sufficient performance has been achieved and effectiveness of our flexible implementation has been confirmed.

An MPI-2 based distributed parallel-I/O library called Stampi-I/O has been developed using communication infrastructure of Stampi. Stampi is a communication library based on MPI and MPI-2. It has been developed for heterogeneous computing environment as infrastructure of metacomputing. As many applications in computational science handle huge amount of data which one parallel computer can not handle, distributed parallel-I/O libraries have been required for effective handling of such huge data on heterogeneous computing environment. Considering this situation, Stampi-I/O has been designed and developed. In this paper, motivations, architecture and preliminary results of performance measurement of Stampi-I/O are described.
