In this presentation, we analyzed the chemical state of cesium in radiocesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs) released during the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident using high-resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES) and micro X-ray fluorescence ($$mu$$-XRF). The results identified two forms of cesium: one dissolved in glass and the other enriched on the surfaces of internal voids. The latter is considered to have originally existed as a gas and became concentrated during the cooling and solidification of the molten glass. These findings are crucial for understanding the formation process of CsMPs during the accident, as well as for future decommissioning and safety assessments.

The radioactivity of cesium in the water and sediments of two major rivers was measured along with airborne radioactivity in Namie Town, after the recent partial lift on the evacuation order in 2017. The observed concentrations were up to 384 $$pm$$ 11 mBq/L for $$^{137}$$Cs in unfiltered water and 1.28 $$pm$$ 0.09 mBq/m$$^{3}$$ for $$^{137}$$Cs in air, while the sediment had a maximum of 44900 $$pm$$ 23.4 Bq/kg for $$^{137}$$Cs. The $$^{134}$$Cs/$$^{137}$$Cs ratios indicate the main origin of the cesium in the sediment to be Unit 1 in good agreement with previous reports on the accident.

Radionuclide therapy with low-energy auger electron emitters could potentially provide high anti-tumor efficacy while keeping normal organs toxicity low. In this study, we evaluated the usefulness of auger electron emitter $$^{125}$$I and compared it with beta-emitter $$^{131}$$I for tumor treatment in 2D and 3D cell culture models. The computer simulation model for 2D and 3D cell culture were constructed, and the absorbed radiation dose of $$^{125}$$I or $$^{131}$$I in each model were calculated by using a Monte Carlo simulation code (PHITS). The therapeutic effect of $$^{125}$$I was comparable to that of $$^{131}$$I in 2D model, but the efficacy was inferior to that of $$^{131}$$I-MIBG in 3D model, since crossfire effect is negligible and the homogeneous distribution of radionuclide was insufficient.

We have developed direct liquid fuel anion exchange membrane fuel cell vehicles to deal with the global warming. Non-platinum group metals (PGM) catalyst has been researched to apply for both anode and cathode electrodes. A test driving was carried out for the fuel cell vehicle equipped with no precious metals as catalysts at SPring-8 in 2013. Here we introduce our results of advanced analysis for reaction mechanism and active site of non-PGM catalyst using synchrotron radiation X-rays at SPring-8.
