By introducing 13th- (61.7 nm) and 15th-order harmonics (53.4 nm) of femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm into an undulator of SCSS (SPring-8 Compact SASE Source) test accelerator at RIKEN, these harmonic pulses were amplified by a factor of more than 10$$^{2}$$ with a high contrast ratio through the interaction between accelerated electron bunches and the harmonic pulses. From numerical simulations of the amplification processes of high-order harmonic pulses in the undulator, optimum conditions of the electron bunch duration interacting with the high-order harmonic pulses were investigated for generating full-coherent and intense pulses in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength region.

The 13th harmonic of a Ti:sapphire laser has been significantly amplified with the SCSS test accelerator. The temporal and spatial overlap of the electron beam and the high harmonic radiation were precisely tuned for achieving the seeded free electron laser operation. With numerical simulation the present HH-seeded FEL scheme could readily be applied to the wavelength region down to 10 nm.

The resonant and non-resonant two-photon single ionization processes of He were investigated using intense free electron laser light in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) region (53.4-61.4 nm) covering the 1s-2p and 1s-3p resonant transitions of He. On the basis of the dependences of the yield of He$$^{+}$$ on the XUV light-field intensity at 53.4, 58.4, 56.0 and 61.4 nm, the absolute values of the two-photon ionization cross sections of He at the four different wavelengths and their dependence on the light-field intensity were determined for the first time.

We succeeded in generating the seeded free electron laser (FEL) with wavelengths of 61 nm at the SCSS test accelerator. The 13th (61 nm) harmonics generated by focusing the high peak power Ti:Sapphire laser to the Xe gas cell was directed to the undulator. The 13th harmonic of a Ti:sapphire (Ti:S) laser in the plateau region was injected as a seeding source to a 250-MeV free-electron-laser (FEL) amplifier. When the amplification conditions were fulfilled, strong enhancement of the radiation intensity by a factor of 650 was observed. The random and uncontrollable spikes, which appeared in the spectra of the Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) based FEL radiation without the seeding source, were found to be suppressed drastically to form to a narrow-band, single peak profile at 61.2 nm. The properties of the seeded FEL radiation were well reproduced by numerical simulations. We discuss the future precept of the seeded FEL scheme to the shorter wavelength region.

Neutron energy spectra at 0 degree produced from stopping-length thick graphite, aluminum, iron and lead targets bombarded by 250 MeV and 350 MeV protons were measured at the neutron TOF course at RCNP of Osaka University. The neutron energy spectra were obtained by using the time-of-flight technique in the energy range from 10 MeV to incident proton energy. To compare the experimental results, Monte Carlo calculations by the PHITS and MCNPX codes using the JENDL-HE and the LA150 evaluated nuclear data files were performed. It was found that these calculated results at 0-degree generally underestimated the experimental results for all targets in the energy range above 20 MeV.

Collimated relativistic electrons up to 58 MeV with an electron charge of 2.1 nC were generated by the interaction of intense laser pulses with the Ar cluster target at the laser intensity of 3.5$$times$$10$$^{19}$$W/cm$$^{2}$$. The resulting spectrum does not fit a Maxwellian distribution, but is well described by a two-temperature Maxwellian, which indicates two mechanisms of the electron acceleration. Two dimensional particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate an important role of clusters. The higher energy electrons are injected when they are expelled from the clusters by the laser pulse field. They then gain their energy during the direct acceleration by the laser pulse, whose phase velocity in the underdense plasma is larger than speed of light in vacuum. The lower energy electrons, which are injected during the plasma wave breaking, are accelerated by the wakefield.

Neutron energy spectra produced at the forward direction from thick graphite, aluminum, iron and lead targets bombarded by 250 MeV protons were measured by the TOF method at RCNP of Osaka University. The experimental data were compared with the calculated results of the PHITS, MCNPX codes. All calculations give lower neutron energy spectra than the experimental ones for all targets above 20 MeV and must be improved for neutron production at 0-degree. These experimental data will be useful as benchmark data for investigating the accuracy of the Monte Carlo simulation and for the shielding design of accelerator facilities.

Neutron energy spectra produced from thick targets play an important role in validation of calculation codes that are employed in the design of spallation neutron sources and the shielding design of accelerator facilities. However, appropriate experimental data were scarce in the forward direction for the incident energy higher than 100 MeV. In this study, neutron spectra at 0 degree from thick targets bombarded with 350 MeV protons were measured by the time-of-flight technique using an NE213. The targets used were graphite, Al, Fe and Pb and their thicknesses were chosen to be a little thicker than the stopping lengths. The experiment was carried out at the TOF course of the RCNP (Research Center of Nuclear Physics) ring cyclotron, Osaka University. The flight path length between center of the target and of an NE213 were 11.4 m for the measurement of low energy neutrons and 95 m for high energy neutrons. The experimental data are compared with the calculated results by using the Monte Carlo transport codes, such as MCNPX and PHITS codes.

A demonstration of coherent quantum control for ultrafast precise selection of closely-lying states is reported. A phase-locked pair of femtosecond laser pulses is generated through a pulse shaper to excite the ground-state cesium atom to the Cs(7$$D$$$$_{3/2}$$) and Cs(7$$D$$$$_{5/2}$$) states by two-photon absorption. The excited state population is measured by detecting fluorescence from each spin-orbit state. By controlling the phase-difference of the pulse pair, an ultrafast precise selection is accomplished. The contrast ratio of the maximal to minimal selection ratio exceeds 10$$^3$$ with the delay less than 400 fs.

Optimal laser control for ultrafast selection of closely-lying excited states, whose energy separation is smaller than the laser bandwidth, is reported on the two-photon transition of atomic cesium; Cs(6S $$rightarrow$$ 7D$$_{J}$$, J = 5/2 and 3/2). Selective excitation was carried out by pulse shaping of ultrashort laser pulses which were adaptively modulated in a closed-loop learning system handling eight parameters representing the electric field. Two-color fluorescence from the respective excited states was monitored to measure the selectivity. The fitness used in the learning algorithm was evaluated from the ratio of the fluorescence yield. After fifty generations, a pair of nearly transform-limitted pulses were obtained as an optimal pulse shape, proving the effectiveness of "Ramsey fringes" mechanism. The contrast of the selection ratio was improved by $$sim$$ 30 % from the simple "Ramsey fringes" experiment.
