In the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, the purpose of the 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) is to accelerate a 1 MW, high-intensity proton beam. To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

Proceedings of 2017 Water Reactor Fuel Performance Meeting (WRFPM 2017) (USB Flash Drive), 10 Pages, 2017/09

Since 2015, Mitsubishi Nuclear Fuel (MNF) has joined in a Japanese R&D project of ATF founded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) as a subcontractor to Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) which is the prime contractor to METI. In this program, MNF plans to evaluate an influence of Silicon Carbide (SiC) composite cladding upon fuel rod behavior in current pressurized water reactors (PWR). This paper reports the evaluation result of the applicability of fuel rod with SiC composite cladding for a conventional PWR. For the applicability evaluations of SiC composite to conventional PWR, both of analytical evaluations and out-of-pile tests for SiC composite were conducted. Analytical evaluations were performed by Mitsubishi's own fuel rod design code and the fuel rod behavior evaluation code developed by JAEA. These codes were modified to evaluate the behavior of the fuel rod with SiC composite cladding. As out-of-pile tests, thermal diffusivity measurement and autoclave corrosion test for SiC composite samples were performed. Test apparatus were developed for evaluation of performance of SiC composite under the condition simulated design basis accident (DBA).

A Si(111) winged crystal has been designed to minimize anticlastic bending and improve sagittal focusing efficiency. The crystal was thin with wide stiffening wings. The length-to-width ratio of the crystal was optimized by finite element analysis, and the optimal value was larger than the "golden value". The analysis showed that the slope error owing to anticlastic bending is less than the Darwin width. The X-rays were focused two-dimensionally using the crystal and a tangentially bent mirror. The observed profiles of the focal spot agreed well with the results of a ray-tracing calculation in the energy range from 8 to 17.5 keV. X-ray diffraction measurements with a high signal-to-noise ratio using this focusing system were demonstrated for a small protein crystal.

The RCS beam power ramp-up has well proceeded since the start-up of user program in December 2008. So far the RCS has successfully achieved high intensity beam trials up to 420 kW at a low-level intensity loss of less than 1%, and the output beam power for the routine user program has been increased to 210 kW to date. Recently our effort has also been made to improve the quality of the extraction beam, namely to realize low-halo high-power beams. In this paper, recent effort for beam halo reduction in the RCS will be presented.

The J-PARC 3-GeV RCS is a high-power pulsed proton driver aiming at 1 MW output beam power. The RCS was beam commissioned in October 2007 and made available for user operation in December 2008 with an output beam power of 4 kW. Since then, the output beam power of the RCS has been steadily increasing as per progressions of beam tuning and hardware improvements. So far, the RCS has successfully achieved high-intensity beam trials of up to 420 kW at a low-level intensity loss of less than 1%, and the output beam power for the routine user program has been increased to 210 kW. The most important issues in increasing the output beam power are the control and minimization of beam loss to maintain machine activation within the permissible level. This paper presents the recent progress in the RCS beam power ramp-up scenario, with particular emphasis on our efforts for beam loss issues.

By employing high-Cr ferritic steels to the structural materials for JSFR, a compact plant designing can be achieved. It contributes to reduce the construction cost and to enhance the freedom of designing. Among the high-Cr ferritic steels, modified 9Cr-1Mo steel (compatible to ASTM A335 P91) is a candidate of the structural material for the demonstration facility of JSFR, because the steel has superior microstructure stability at elevated temperature for long time. However, remarkable creep strength degradation has been observed in the welded joint of high-Cr ferritic steels, especially in long-term region. It is known as "Type-IV damage". In the elevated temperature designing for the fast reactors, such creep strength degradation must be taken into account properly. Therefore, the creep strength assessment procedure and the allowable stress for the welded joints made of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel have been proposed. In this study, (1) a series of creep rupture tests to verify the validity of the creep strength assessment procedure was performed. (2) Applicability of the creep strength assessment procedure to the creep fatigue strength assessment of the welded joints made of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel was investigated. (3) Metallurgical examinations of creep ruptured specimens were carried out to confirm the contribution of "Type-IV damage". As a result, it was demonstrated that the creep strength assessment procedure was validated using the long-term creep rupture test results less than 30,000h and that the creep strength assessment procedure was applicable to the creep-fatigue strength assessment based on some uniaxial creep-fatigue test results.

Proceedings of 7th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (DVD-ROM), p.1013 - 1015, 2010/08

In J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex), the negative hydrogen ions (H$$^{-}$$) accelerated by LINAC are converted to protons (H$$^{+}$$) by the Charge Stripping Foil before injecting into RCS (Rapid Cycling Synchrotron). About 99.7% of H$$^{-}$$ are stripped it's two electrons by the 1st foil. The rest of H0 and H$$^{-}$$ are converted to H$$^{+}$$ by 2nd and 3rd foils and abandoned into H0 dump. Monitoring of the fraction of beam current into the H0 dump gives useful information for the stable beam supply during accelerator user's operation. This report describes the method of online monitoring to estimate the beam current of the H0 dump line.

To minimize the radiation exposure during maintenance, it is necessary to compose the 3-GeV RCS vacuum system with reliable components which have long life time in such a high level of radiation. In addition, it is necessary to keep the operating pressure with beam in ultra high vacuum for suppressing the pressure instability. Thus we should think of not only the outgassing mainly due to ion desorption but also the pumping efficiency. From the above, the vacuum system was designed. The ring is divided by the isolation valves into 6 sections, which can be pumped down independently. For avoiding any eddy current loss ceramic ducts are used in the bending and focusing magnets. These ducts are connected to the Ti ducts, putting the Ti bellows between. Here, we adopt pure Ti as a material for the ducts and bellows because of its small residual radioactivity. The ring is evacuated with 20 ion pumps (0.7 m$$^{3}$$/s) and 24 turbomolecular pumps (TMPs) (1.3 m$$^{3}$$/s), which are attached to the Ti ducts. The TMPs are used for not only rough pumping but also evacuation during the beam operation. Especially a collimator system for localizing beam losses in a restricted area is evacuated with the TMPs, because the outgassing from this region will be probably the largest. On the other hand, each arc section is pumped by 4 ion pumps and 2 TMPs. To realize the above system, we have developed some components such as large aperture ceramic ducts and TMPs with high radioactive-resistance, as well as several kinds of heat treatment to reduce the outgassing. Finally, we have realized the UHV without baking in the RCS and the beam operation has been succeeded until now.

The Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) project is a joint project of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK). The accelerator complex of J-PARC consists of a 181 MeV Linac, a 3 GeV Rapid-Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) and a 50 GeV Main Ring (MR). The RCS ring is designed to support 1 MW of beam and to deliver a 3 GeV pulsed proton beam to the spallation neutron target and the MR at a repetition rate of 25 Hz. Since the RCS finally accelerates very high intensity beam, the secondary electron cloud may affect the accelerator performance. The electron cloud effect in RCS was evaluated by simulations, but the secondary electron emission yield (SEY) of the chamber surface and beam loss point, lost proton number were assumed. In this Study we measured the SEY from the samples which was dealt with similar process of an actual chamber surface. We estimate the practical influence of the secondary electron cloud during beam operation.

A 3-GeV Rapid-Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) has been commissioned recently. During its beam commissioning, various beam diagnostic instrumentation has been used. The multi-wire profile monitor (MWPM) is used to establish injection and H0 dump line. The electron catcher confirms that the beam hits a charge exchange carbon foil and the specified current monitor limits the beam current to the H0 dump. Single pass BPMs and ionization profile monitors (IPM) help to check the one pass orbit without circulation of the beam. The beam position monitor (BPM) can measure both COD and turn-by-turn position. Tune monitor system consists of exciter and its own BPM. The exciter shakes the beam and coherent oscillation. Dedicated BPMs, Fast CT (FCT) and Wall Current Monitor (WCM) are used for RF feedback or feedfoward control. It will describe the performance of each instruments and how they are contributed to the successful beam commissioning.
