The high-performance computer system Helios which is located at The Computational Simulation Centre (CSC) in The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) started its operation in January 2012 under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and the EU. The Helios system has been used for magnetised fusion related simulation studies in the EU and Japan and has kept high average usage rate. As a result, the Helios system has contributed to many research products in a wide range of research areas from core plasma physics to reactor material and reactor engineering. This project review gives a short catalogue of domestic simulation research projects. First, we outline the IFERC-CSC project. After that, shown are objectives of the research projects, numerical schemes used in simulation codes, obtained results and necessary computations in future.

The surface hydrogeological investigation has been carried out in and around the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory area as a part of Horonobe URL project. Observations of meteorological, river flux, water quality, soil moisture and groundwater level have been continued in order to understand the groundwater recharge rate and groundwater flow in the shallow part, which are required for the setting of boundary and initial condition of the groundwater flow analysis. This report shows the summary of the surface hydrogeological investigation and results of recharge rates of investigation basins from December 2004 to November 2009 are calculated by using the water budget method. Spatial estimation of hydrological quantities for the groundwater recharge rate is demonstrated by the runoff analysis. As a result, average of the groundwater recharge rate of whole basins is estimated to 131mm/yr. Suggestive observations related to hydraulic properties of the geology and faults are obtained from consideration to the groundwater recharge rate for each basin.

A five-year research project has been initiated in 2005 to develop a code based on the MPS (Moving Particle Semi-implicit) method for detailed analysis of key phenomena in core disruptive accidents (CDAs) of sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs). The code is named COMPASS (Computer Code with Moving Particle Semi-implicit for Reactor Safety Analysis). The key phenomena include (1) fuel pin failure and disruption, (2) molten pool boiling, (3) melt freezing and blockage formation, (4) duct wall failure, (5) low-energy disruptive core motion, (6) debris-bed coolability, (7) metal-fuel pin failure. Validation study of COMPASS is progressing for these key phenomena. In this paper, recent COMPASS results of detailed analyses for the several key phenomena are summarized. The present results demonstrate COMPASS will be useful to understand and clarify the key phenomena of CDAs in SFRs in details.

1 MV holding and beam optics in a multi-aperture multi-grid accelerator for ITER NBI

At JAEA, a multi-aperture multi-grid accelerator has been developed for the ITER neutral beam system. A target is H$$^{-}$$ ion beam acceleration of 0.5 A (200 A/m$$^{2}$$) at 1 MeV. In real accelerators, it was found that the voltage holding was about a half of that obtained in an ideal small electrode. After applying necessary gap length and radii of edges of grid supports to lower local electric field concentrations, the accelerator succeeded in sustaining 1 MV for 4000 s. As a result, beam parameters were increased to 879 keV, 0.36 A (157 A/m$$^{2}$$) at perveance matched condition from 796 kV, 0.32 A (140 A/m$$^{2}$$) reported in FEC2008. In the beam acceleration, the beamlet deflections due to magnetic field and space charge repulsion caused direct interceptions, that resulted in limitations in the beam energy and current. Compensation of these beamlet deflections has been tested applying aperture offset and field shaping plate, which were examined in a three-dimensional beam analysis.

In this paper, FY2009 results of the COMPASS code development are reported. Validation calculations for melt freezing and blockage formation, eutectic reaction of metal fuel, duct wall failure (thermal-hydraulic analysis), fuel pin failure and disruption and duct wall failure (structural analysis) are shown. Phase diagram calculations, classical and first-principles molecular dynamics were used to investigate physical properties of eutectic reactions: metallic fuel/steel and control rod material/steel. Basic studies for the particle method and SIMMER code calculations supported the COMPASS code development. COMPASS is expected to clarify the basis of experimentally-obtained correlations used in SIMMER. Combination of SIMMER and COMPASS will be useful for safety assessment of CDAs as well as optimization of the core design.

Status of beam loss evaluation at J-PARC linac

Ar-CO$$_{2}$$ gas proportional counters are employed for the measurement of beam loss in the current linac operation, but they are also sensitive to background noise of X-ray emitted from RF cavities. In SDTL section, protons, secondary hadrons and $$gamma$$ rays would be mainly generated as a beam loss, but it is not easy to estimate real beam loss using the proportional counter. The plastic scintillation counters with less X-ray sensitivity and $$^{3}$$He proportional counters with high thermal neutron sensitivity will be also employed to measure the beam loss. This paper reports the signals obtained during the beam operation using the Ar-CO$$_{2}$$ gas proportional counter and the plastic scintillation counter. Finally, a measurement of emission position and angle distributions of protons due to negative hydrogen ion (H$$^{-}$$) beam loss is being planed. This plan is introduced and this result would lead to clarify the source of beam loss.

A power supply for the ITER Neutral Beam Injector (NBI) is a DC ultra-high voltage (UHV) power supply to accelerate negative ion beams of 40 A up to an energy of 1 MeV. Japan Atomic Energy Agency as the Japan Domestic Agency for ITER contributes procurement of dc -1 MV main components such as step-up -1 MV transformers rectifiers, a high voltage deck 2, a -1 MV insulating transformer, a transmission line, a surge reduction system and equipments for site test. Design of the surge suppression in the NBI power supply is one of the key issues to obtain the stable injector performance. This report describes the design study using EMTDC code on the surge suppression by optimizing the core snubber and additional elements in the -1 MV power supply. The results show that the input energy from the stray capacitance to the accelerator at the breakdown can be reduced to about 25 J that is smaller than the design criteria of 50 J for the ITER NBI.

A 500-kV photocathode DC electron gun which can supply the beam of a low emittance and a high average current has been developed in collaboration with KEK, JAEA, Hiroshima Univ., Nagoya Univ. and Yamaguchi Univ. The vacuum of the gun chamber has to be lower Extreme High Vacuum for maintain cathode-life time. A titanium chamber and new material of ceramic were employed to reduce outgassing rate. The result of outgassing rate of the gun chamber is described in this report.

Recent progress in the energy recovery linac project in Japan

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Dispersion and freezing of molten core material was calculated by the COMPASS code to compare with the experimental data of GEYSER. Molten core material flowed up with freezing on the pipe inner surface. As a molten pool behavior, CABRI-TPA2 experiment was analyzed, where a sphere of solid steel was surrounded by solid fuel. Power was injected to cause melting and boiling of the steel sphere. SCARABEE-BE+3 test was analyzed by COMPASS as a validation of failure of duct walls.

The ITER NBI requires a five stage -1 MV power supply system under strict load protection for electric breakdowns. A circuit model of the power supply with MAMuG accelerator has been developed for the simulation of fast transients related to the accelerator breakdowns. The complex inductive and capacitive couplings were assessed by calculations with finite element techniques. The circuit model, developed to address a number of design issues requiring simulations at system level, is now ready for use - the optimization of passive protections being the most significant application.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency as the Japan Domestic Agency (JADA) for ITER contributes procurement of dc -1 MV ultra-high voltage (UHV) components such as a dc -1 MV generator, a transmission line and a -1 MV insulating transformer for the ITER NBI power supply. Inverter frequency of 150 Hz in the -1 MV power supply and major circuit parameters have been proposed and adopted in the ITER NBI. The dc UHV insulation at the multi-layer insulation structure of the transformer for a long pulse up to 3600 s has been designed with electric field simulation. Based on the simulation overall dimensions of the dc UHV components have been finalized. The JADA contributes to provide an effective surge suppression system composed of core snubbers and resistors. Input energy into the accelerator from the power supply can be reduced to about 20 J which satisfies the design criteria of the total 50 J at -1 MV breakdown.
