Glove-box gloves, that are used for handling nuclear fuel materials at the Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP) of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, have an expiration date by internal rules. All gloves are replaced at a maximum of every 4-year. However, degrees of glove deterioration varies depending on its usage environment such as frequency, chemicals, and radiation dose. Therefore, physical properties such as tensile strength, elongation, hardness of gloves are measured and technical evaluation method for the glove life-time is established. It was found that gloves without any defects in its appearance have enough physical properties and satisfies the acceptance criteria values of new gloves. Thus, it was considered that the expired gloves could be used for total of 8-year, by adding 4-year of new glove life-time. In addition, the results of extrapolation by plotting the glove's physical properties versus the used years showed that the physical properties at 8-year is on the safer side than the reported physical properties of broken glove. Also, the data are not significantly different from the physical properties of the long-term storage glove (8 and 23 years). Based on these results, life-time of gloves at TRP is set to be 8-year. The frequency of glove inspections are not changed, and if any defects is found, the glove is promptly replaced. Thus, the risk related to glove usage is not increased. The cost of purchasing gloves, labor for glove replacement, and the amount of generated waste can be reduced by approximately 40%, respectively, resulting in more efficient and rationalized glove management.

Incoherent neutron scattering and terahertz spectroscopy have approximately the same energy range of measurement. Since both techniques are used to study the dynamics of proteins and hydrated water, it is important to review the advantages and disadvantages of both techniques and the relevant literature. To the best of our knowledge, there is no review of both methods, and we believe that this review is of high value.

In the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, the purpose of the 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) is to accelerate a 1 MW, high-intensity proton beam. To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

All gloves attached to glove-box in Tokai Reprocessing Plant have a fixed expiration date and have to be replaced every 4-year. However, degrees of glove deterioration are different depending on its usage environment (frequency, chemicals, radiation, etc.), because of rubber products. Therefore, physical properties such as tensile strength, elongation, hardness of gloves are measured, and the life-time of gloves are estimated. As a result, gloves without any defects in its appearance have enough physical property for acceptance criteria of new glove. The extrapolated physical property of glove is sufficiently larger than the reported values of damaged glove. No deterioration in physical properties of gloves, that are periodically replaced without any defects in its appearance, is observed and the usable life-time of the glove is estimated to be 8 years.

Protein hydration and its freezing phenomena; Toward the application for cell freezing and frozen food storage

Yamamoto, Naoki*; Nakanishi, Masahiro*; Rajan, R.*; Nakagawa, Hiroshi

Biophysics and Physicobiology (Internet), 18, p.284 - 288, 2021/12

Water is an indispensable solvent for living things. $$sim$$60% of our body is composed of water, the lack of which causes lots of fatal problems. It has also been known that protein function is performed only when it accompanies water molecules around the surface, i.e. hydration water molecules. Therefore, it is essential to understand how water and biological component interact with each other in the view point of structure and dynamics. Freezing is a fundamental and simple phenomenon of water, and thus can be used as a probe for the purpose. Furthermore, preservation of cells and proteins under low temperature is crucial for numerous applications, which in turn triggers a myriad of undesirable consequences because of the freezing.

The Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) is a multipurpose facility for scientific experiments. The accelerator complex consists of a 400-MeV Linac, a 3-GeV Rapid-Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) and a 30-GeV Main Ring synchrotron (MR). The RCS delivers a proton beam to the neutron target and MR, and the MR delivers the beams to the neutrino target and the Hadron Experimental Facility. The first operation of the neutron experiments began in December 2008. Following this, the user operation has been continued with some accidental suspensions. These suspensions include the recovery work due to the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 and the radiation leak incident at the Hadron Experimental Facility. In this report, we summarize the major causes of suspension, and the statistics of the reliability of J-PARC accelerator system is analyzed. Owing to our efforts to achieve higher reliability, the Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) has been improved.

Hydration water plays a crucial role for activating the protein dynamics required for functional expression. Yet, the details are not understood about how hydration water couples with protein dynamics. A temperature hysteresis of the ice formation of hydration water is a key phenomenon to understand which type of hydration water, unfreezable or freezable hydration water, is crucial for the activation of protein dynamics. Using neutron scattering, we observed a temperature-hysteresis phenomenon in the diffraction peaks of the ice of freezable hydration water, whereas protein dynamics did not show any temperature hysteresis. These results show that the protein dynamics is not coupled with freezable hydration water dynamics, and unfreezable hydration water is essential for the activation of protein dynamics.

Luminescence of water during irradiation with particles having energies below the Cerenkov-light threshold was recently found for various types of radiations. However, the relation between the intensities of Cerenkov light and of the luminescence of water at the beam energy below the Cherenkov threshold is not well known. To clarify this point, we measured the produced light irradiating a water sample with electron beams having maximum energies above and below the Cerenkov-light threshold.

An online measurement system using an alpha liquid scintillation counter ($$alpha$$-LSC) coupled to microchip solvent extraction has been developed. A flow-through cell of $$alpha$$-LSC has been prepared by packing PTFE tube into glass tube to combine microchip. Two-phase flow in microchannel has been stabilized by using coiled tube. The Pu in organic phase has been mixed with scintillation cocktail by T-junction connectors. The system separates and detects Pu by online with detection limit of 6.5 Bq/mL, generating only $$mu$$L-level wastes.

Proceedings of 16th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.877 - 880, 2019/07

Interlock system of J-PARC is classified into a personnel protection system (PPS) for human safety and a machine protection system (MPS) for protecting equipment. The PPS of the J-PARC accelerator started from the operation at Linac in 2006 and was completed by the MR operation in 2008. In the next 10 years, some improvements have been made, such as updating video monitoring systems and establishing new interlocks. In addition to describing recent operations including these updatings, this paper reports the current status of inspections and maintenance conducted to maintain and improve reliability.

The Fast measurement of the monitors data with the beam synchronized tag in J-PARC

Hatakeyama, Shuichiro*; Yamamoto, Kazami; Yoshimoto, Masahiro; Hayashi, Naoki

Proceedings of 16th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.789 - 793, 2019/07

The J-PARC Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) accelerates 400 MeV LINAC beams up to 3 GeV, and distributes them to the Materials Life Science Experiment Facility (MLF) and the Main Ring Synchrotron (MR) in 25 Hz cycle. To prevent radiation damages from the beam loss and also to detect failures of machines an interlock mechanism called the Machine Protection System (MPS) is introduced. If the beam is stopped by the MPS we should recover it quickly for the users of experiment facilities. The MPS related to the beam dynamics is usually diagnosed by beam loss monitors (BLM), beam position monitors (BPM) and current transformers (CT). Data of these monitors should be distinguished MLF or MR since the parameters for the magnet and the RF systems are different between MLF and MR. We confirmed validity of the method to distinguish the beam destination by using the information of the beam synchronized tag from the reflective memory (RFM) when taking the monitor data in 25 Hz.

Proceedings of 16th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.1235 - 1239, 2019/07

After the summer shutdown in 2018, the J-PARC restarted user operation in late October. While beam power to the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) was 500 kW as before the summer shutdown, linac beam current was increased from 40 to 50 mA. Operation of the Main Ring (MR) was suspended due to the modification and/or maintenance of the Superkamiokande (neutrino detector) and Hadron experimental facility. The user operation was resumed in the middle of February for the Hadron experimental facility at 51 kW. But on March 18, one of the bending magnets in the beam transport line to the MR had a failure. It was temporary recovered and restored beam operation on April 5, but the failure occurred again on April 24 and the beam operation of the MR was suspended. In the fiscal year of 2018, the availabilities for the MLF, neutrino and hadron facilities are 94%, 86%, and 74%, respectively.

Proceedings of 15th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.1317 - 1321, 2018/08

After the summer shutdown in 2017, the J-PARC restarted user operation in late October. The Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) used a spare target and the beam power was limited to 150-200kW. The target was replaced with a new one in the summer shutdown. The beam power was for user operation gradually increased from 300 kW to 500 kW. We have successfully demonstrated 1MW 1hour operation in July 2018. The beam power for the neutrino experimental facility (NU) was 440 kW to 470 kW. The beam was delivered to the hadron experimental facility (HD) from January to February in 2018. The repetition rate of the main ring was shortened from 5.52 to 5.20 seconds, the beam power was increased from 44 to 50 kW. From March 2018, we delivered to the NU at 490 kW stably. In the fiscal year of 2017, the availabilities for the MLF, NU and HD are 93%, 89% and 66%, respectively.
