The high-performance computer system Helios which is located at The Computational Simulation Centre (CSC) in The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) started its operation in January 2012 under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and the EU. The Helios system has been used for magnetised fusion related simulation studies in the EU and Japan and has kept high average usage rate. As a result, the Helios system has contributed to many research products in a wide range of research areas from core plasma physics to reactor material and reactor engineering. This project review gives a short catalogue of domestic simulation research projects. First, we outline the IFERC-CSC project. After that, shown are objectives of the research projects, numerical schemes used in simulation codes, obtained results and necessary computations in future.

Development of technologies to investigate properties (conditions) of deep geological environment and models development of geological environment have been pursued in "Geoscientific Research" in the Horonobe underground research laboratory (Horonobe URL) project. A geochemical model of groundwater evolution which is a part of geological environment model requires the data of groundwater chemistry around the Horonobe URL for the development. This report summarizes the data obtained for 3 years (i.e., from the fiscal year 2011 to 2013), especially for the results for measurement of physico-chemical parameters and analysis of groundwater chemistry, in the Horonobe URL project.

This study reconsiders rock's mechanical and hydrological parameters based on additional ${it in-situ}$ data given in this year, and conducts the mechanical-hydrological analysis using the Micromechanics-Based Continuum (MBC) model which can consider the behavior of fracture. The acquired analysis results are compared with actual test data such as drift convergence and hydraulic pressure around the drift. Then, following knowledge is obtained.

Chemical state analysis by a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) using synchrotron radiation is performed for $$beta$$-FeSi$$_{2}$$ single crystals and homoepitaxial $$beta$$-FeSi$$_{2}$$ films. The Si 2p XPS and Fe L-edge XAS spectra imply that the annealing at 1173 K to remove native oxide layers on the crystal induces the formation of FeSi in the surface. The formation of FeSi is also confirmed by Si K-edge XAS analysis. For the homoepitaxial $$beta$$-FeSi$$_{2}$$ films grown on the crystals, the Si K-edge XAS spectra indicate that structurally homogeneous $$beta$$-FeSi$$_{2}$$ films can be grown on the $$beta$$-FeSi$$_{2}$$ single crystals when the substrate temperatures of 973 and 1073 K are applied for molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Consequently, it is indicated that the combination of XPS and XAS using synchrotron radiation is a useful tool to clarify chemical states nondestructively.
