The multi-turn charge-exchange H beam injection scheme with stripper foils is one of the key techniques to achieve a MW-class high power proton beam. The J-PARC RCS adopts Hybrid type Boron-doped Carbon (HBC) stripper foil, which was developed in KEK to improve the lifetime. Indeed, the RCS user operation confirmed that HBC foil has the great advantage of a longer lifetime against high beam irradiation. To examine characteristics of the HBC foils, various beam studies were performed, such as the stripping efficiency measurement and long-term observation with an H beam in the J-PARC RCS, foil analysis using RBS, EDR and PIXE methods, and SEM and TEM observation after the ion beam irradiation in Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application (TIARA) on National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology (QST). Recently, the deposition apparatus for the HBC foils from the KEK Tsukuba-site was relocated to the JAEA Tokai-site, and we started fabrication of new HBC foil in 2017. (The new one fabricated in JAEA we call J-HBC foil.) And, we continue investigations in TIARA with the J-HBC foils. Furthermore, in-depth researches by changing the process parameters of the foil deposition are carried on. Recent results suggest that the amount of the boron doped in the foil is more important parameter than the ratio of the discharge amount of carbon from cathode and anode electrodes. In this presentation, we will report the details of recent analysis of the J-HBC foil.

Metallic pipes under solid-liquid two phase flow is damaged by collision of solid particle to the pipe walls, and this phenomenon is named "erosion". In the case of the liquid is corrosive solution, further damage is occurred on the pipe walls chemically, and this named "erosion-corrosion". In the Fukushima Daiichi decommissioning project, the fuel debris will be crushed during removal operation of the debris and micro debris particles would be generated. It is estimated that the pipes of the circulating cooling system would be damaged under the solid-liquid two phase flow containing fuel debris particles. For the reason, the previous study about erosion and erosion-corrosion of metallic materials under solid-liquid two phase flow was surveyed. The survey showed that the damage rate by erosion and erosion-corrosion is influence by a lot of parameter in comparison to the corrosion rate which occurred in no-flow solution. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to selecting the experimental method and condition before the investigation about erosion-corrosion of metallic materials under solid-liquid two phase flow is carried out.

Times Cited Count:26 Percentile:68.59(Environmental Sciences)To understand the subsurface biosphere, borehole investigation was conducted for 300-m deep granitic rocks at the Mizunami underground research laboratory, Japan. The initial biomass was the highest with the flourish of aerobic H-oxidizing Hydrogenophaga spp., whereas an uncultivated lineage of the phylum Nitrospirae became predominant after three years with decreasing biomass. The common occurrence of many species of Nitrospirae and Chlorobi phyla at the geographically distinct sites and the exclusive detection of their phylogenetically related environmental sequences from deep groundwaters and terrestrial hot springs, suggest that these bacteria are indigenous and potentially adapted to the deep terrestrial subsurface.

The existence of a mu-e conversion process is expected by some theories beyond the standard model in particle physics, but has not been discovered yet due to its low probability. The DeeMe experiment, proposed at J-PARC Material Life Science Facility (MLF), is planned to find the mu-e conversion process on a Muon production target. In order to distinguish mu-e event signal from a background, the number of a proton that comes after hundreds of nanoseconds from the main beam should be less than one per one hour during the DeeMe experiment. Therefore we designed a new measurement system to confirm low background level. A simulation result showed that the new system could detect such delayed proton.

Development of the reactor measurement system was started to obtain real-time in-core nuclear and thermal information, where the quantity measurement of brightness of Cherenkov light was applied. The system would be applied as monitoring system in severe accidents and for advanced operation management technology in existing LWRs. In this report, the calculation and the observation results were summarized about the quantity of the Cherenkov light caused by the and ray emitted from the fuels in the core of Kyoto University Research Reactor.

JAEA is responsible for siting a proper location to establish new disposal facilities with siting criterion and procedure, in consideration of transparency and impartial for the siting process, based on Plan Concerning the Disposal Business Execution. As a part of the study to draw up siting criterion and procedure, Sensitivity analysis of the disposal facilities from the viewpoint of dose evaluation and cost estimation under various siting condition will be carried out. Therefore, Conceptual design of disposal facilities as a reference case is necessary. The basic condition of the design conforms to the property, quantity, radioactivity of waste packages, technical standards and likely siting condition. This report summarizes the results of the reasonable design of our disposal facilities and the layout of the place of activity where the disposal facilities and associated facilities to be installed.

An application of cathodic protection method with impressed current system to control corrosion of austenitic stainless steel in boiling nitric acid solution was studied to improve corrosion resistance of components in fuel reprocessing plant. Plate and tube type specimens made of ultra low carbon type 304 stainless steel (SUS304ULC) were immersed in boiling nitric acid solutions using electrochemical test cells, electrochemical potentiostatic tests and cathodic protection tests were performed. Corrosion rates in the solution with and without protection were measured. As the results, corrosion rates of plate type specimens with cathodic protection were decreased from 1/40 to 1/10 against without protection. In the case of tube type specimen, loss of outer surface thickness was decreased about 1/8, and no deviation of the loss was observed. Authors were concluded that cathodic protection method was expectative as one of the maintenance methods of components in fuel reprocessing plant.

Titanium nitrides (TiN) are non-stoichiometric compounds and show covalent properties as well as metallic and ionic properties, which make them fascinating for both fundamental research and technological applications. The purpose of this work is to study changes of the crystallographic and electronic structures of Ti films by heating and by nitriding during N-implantation into Ti films separated from NaCl(001) substrates, using in-situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) equipped with the instrument for electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and then to clarify the atomistic nitriding processes of Ti thin films due to the N-implantation with the aid of molecular orbital calculations. The present calculations throw light on the hcp-fcc transformation mechanism between fcc-Ti sublattices and hcp sublattices due to the release of H atoms or due to the implantation of N atoms, taking into account the bonding interaction of Ti sublattices with ligand H or N atoms.

Future synchrotron light sources based on the energy-recovery linacs (ERLs) are expected to be capable of producing super-brilliant and/or ultra-short pulses of synchrotron radiation. Our Japanese collaboration team is making efforts for realizing an ERL-based hard X-ray source. We report recent progress in our R&D efforts.

SUS304ULC which had been designed stainless steel was used for a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. SUS304ULC stainless steel which had been designed to improve the anti-corrosion properties for intergranular corrosion was used for a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. It has been, however, known that the boiling and/or co-existence of oxidizing ions conditions accelerated the corrosion rates of the material. We examined the electrochemical evaluation of the steel at transpassive region in the boiling nitric acid solution. Although oxygen evolution reaction was influenced by the solutions, metal dissolution reaction was mainly depended by the corrosion potential of the material. Corrosion features were intergranular corrosion and were not influenced by the kinds of solutions. The ratio of the dissolved ions was same as that of the bulk steel composition.

The cathodic protection applications of reprocessing plant made of stainless steel in boiling nitric acid solutions was studied. In this study, 304ULC stainless steels in 3N HNO solutions was investigated, Saturated Silver chloride Electrode (SSE) was used as reference electrode. Results of potentiostatic corrosion test was that corrosion rates shows an exponential function increase with rises of potential in transpassive state regions and finded possibility of the cathodic protection applications. Corrosion rates with cathodic protection was about one fortieth of without cathodic protection in boiling nitric acid solutions added 10 g/L vanadium ions (imitation solutions of reprocessing).
