Atomic oxygen (AO) is one of the dominant components of the residual atmosphere in low Earth orbit. AO collides with spacecraft with translational energy of 5 eV, forming nanoscale protrusions on polymeric materials. This study investigated the size of free-volume holes and the layer thickness that interacted with AO for polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. By the AO irradiation, oxidized layer formed in the surface, and the maximum depth of the oxidized layer for PE and PP were deeper than for PS. The different sizes of free-volume holes would affect the injection depths of AO, resulting in the oxidized layers' thicknesses and surface morphologies.

The great amount of water used for cooling the stricken power reactors at Fukushima Dai-ichi has resulted in accumulation of "remaining water". As the remaining water is subsequently contaminated by FPs, etc., it is necessary to decontaminate it in order to reduce the volume of liquid radioactive waste and to reuse it again for cooling the reactors. Various techniques are being applied to remove FP, etc. and to make stable waste forms. One of the methods using the iron phosphate glass as a medium is being developed to stabilize the strontium-bearing sludge whose main component is BaSO$$_{4}$$. From the results hitherto, the iron phosphate glass is regarded as a potential medium for the target sludge.

Chemical reactions of a novel gauche-type spin trap, G-CYPMPO ($textit{sc}$-5-(5,5-dimethyl-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphosphinan-2-yl)-5-methy-1-pyrroline 1-oxide, torsion angle: O1-P1-C6-N1 of 52.8$$^{circ}$$), with reactive oxygen species were examined by pulse radiolysis technique with 35 MeV electron beam and electron spin resonance spectroscopy after $$^{60}$$Co $$gamma$$-ray irradiation. The spin trapping reaction rate constants of G-CYPMPO toward hydroxyl radical and hydrated electron were estimated to be (4.2$$pm$$0.1)$$times$$10$$^{9}$$ and (11.8$$pm$$0.2)$$times$$10$$^{9}$$ M$$^{-1}$$s$$^{-1}$$, respectively. Half-lives of spin adducts, hydroxyl radical and perhydroxyl radical adducted G-CYPMPO were estimated to be $$sim$$35 and $$sim$$90 min, respectively. A comparison of the results with earlier reports using different radical sources suggests that the purity of the solution and/or the radical generation technique may influence the stability of spin adducts.

Surface carbon films on the weathered Japanese roof tiles were characterized by soft X-ray spectroscopy. From the X-ray absorption measurements, it was confirmed that the surface carbon films were oxidized by weathering. On the ohterhand, from the X-ray emission measurements, it can be confirmed that the degree of the orientation was kept in the inner carbon films.

JAERI and JNC have started a JAERI-JNC joint research program in fiscal year 2003, which has been aimed for efficient progress and synergistic effect on the research activities in both Institutes. This study has been chosen one of the joint research themes because it has been our common objective in the field of structural materials of FBR and LWR components. The purpose of the study is to clarify damage mechanism of structural materials used under irradiation, and then to develop the methods for damage evaluation and detection in earlier stage of progressing process of damage. In fiscal year 2004 and 2005, micro-corrosion measurement, electrochemical corrosion test and leakage magnetic flux density measurement apparatuses were developed and equipped in two hot facilities and irradiated and unirradiated crept specimens, irradiated high purity model austenitic stainless alloys were also prepared and applied to this study. These apparatuses and specimens were used for damage evaluation, and these feasibilities for nuclear power plant materials were studied.

Polarized emission spectra from graphite have been measured by an EPMA and discussed by means of molecular orbital calculation of 2p electrons densities of state of graphite by some of the present authors. The present study treats the refined measurements of the polarized C K-emission band spectra from the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and discusses the structure of the surface carbons of Japanese traditional smoked roof tiles, Ibushi Kawara.

Irradiation behavior of rock-like oxide fuels

Two irradiation tests on the rock-like oxide (ROX) fuels, small disk-shape fuel targets and pellet-type fuels, were performed in order to clarify in-pile irradiation stabilities. Swelling, fractional fission gas release (FGR) and phase change were examined by puncture test, profilometry and ceramography. YSZ single-phase fuel showed an excellent irradiation behavior, ie. low fission gas release (less than 3%), negligible swelling and no appreciable restructuring. The particle dispersed fuels showed lower swelling and higher fission gas release than those of mechanically blended fuels. Spinel decomposition and subsequence restructuring in the spinel matrix fuels was observed for the first time in the present investigation. It would be possible to reduce the FGR of the spinel matrix fuels, if the maximum fuels temperature is limited below 1700 K where neither spinel decomposition nor restructuring was observed. Damaged area of spinel matrix due to fission fragment irradiation seemed to be confined to thin layers around the surface of YSZ particles.

Research on the plutonium rock-like oxide (ROX) fuels and their once-through burning in light water reactors has been performed to establish an option for utilizing and disposing effectively the excess plutonium. The ROX fuel is a sort of the inert matrix fuels and consists of mineral-like compounds such as yttria stabilized zirconia, spinel and corundum. A particle-dispersed fuel was devised to reduce damage by heavy fission fragments. Some preliminary results on swelling, fractional gas release and microstructure change for five ROX fuels were obtained from the irradiation test and successive post-irradiation examinations. Inherent disadvantages of the Pu-ROX fuel cores could be improved by adding 238U or 232Th as resonant materials, and all improved cores showed a nearly the same characteristics as the conventional UO2 core during transient conditions. The threshold enthalpy of the ROX fuel rod failure was found to be comparable to the fresh UO2 rod by pulse-irradiation tests simulating reactivity initiated accident conditions.
