Negative muonium atom ($$mu^+$$e$$^-$$e$$^-$$, Mu$$^-$$) has unique features stimulating potential interesting for several scientific fields. Since its discovery in late 1980's in vacuum, it has been discussed that the production efficiency would be improved using a low-work function material. C12A7 was a well-known insulator as a constituent of alumina cement, but was recently confirmed to exhibit electric conductivity by electron doping. The C12A7 electride has relatively low-work function (2.9 eV). In this paper, the negative muonium production measurement with several materials including a C12A7 electride film will be presented. Measured production rate of the Mu$$^-$$ were 10$$^{-3}$$/s for all the Al, electride, and SUS target. Significant enhancement on electride target was not observed, thus it is presumed that the surface condition should be more carefully treated. There was no material dependence of the Mu$$^-$$ averaged energy: it was 0.2$$pm$$0.1keV.

We performed a beam test of a new radio frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ III) for the beam current upgrade of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. First, the conditioning of RFQ III was conducted, and after 20 h of conditioning, RFQ III became very stable with a nominal peak power and duty factor of 400 kW and 1.5%, respectively. An off-line beam test was subsequently conducted before installation in the accelerator tunnel. The transmission, transverse emittance, and energy spread of the 50-mA negative hydrogen beam from RFQ III were measured and compared with simulation results. The experiment and simulation results showed good agreement; therefore, we conclude that the performance of RFQ III conforms to its design.

A quasiperiodic, intermediate-valence (IV) system is realized in an icosahedral Au-Al-Yb quasicrystal. X-ray absorption spectroscopy near the Yb $$L$$$$_{3}$$-edge indicates that quasiperiodically arranged Yb ions assume a mean valence of 2.61, between a divalent state (4$$f$$$$^{14}$$, $$J$$ = 0) and a trivalent one (4$$f$$$$^{13}$$, $$J$$ = 7/2). Magnetization measurements demonstrate that the 4$$f$$ holes in this quasicrystal have a localized character. The magnetic susceptibility shows a Curie-Weiss behavior above $$sim$$100 K with an effective magnetic moment of 3.81 $$mu$$$$_{rm B}$$ per Yb. Moreover, a crystalline approximant to this quasicrystal is an IV compound. We propose a heterogeneous IV model for the quasicrystal, whereas the crystalline approximant is most likely a homogeneous IV system. At temperatures below $$sim$$10 K, specific heat and magnetization measurements reveal non-Fermi-liquid behavior in both the quasicrystal and its crystalline approximant without either doping, pressure, or field tuning.

Kawamura, Masato*; Fukui, Yuji*; Naito, Fujio*; Chishiro, Etsuji; Yamazaki, Masayoshi*; Suzuki, Hiroyuki*; Shinozaki, Shinichi; Hasegawa, Kazuo

Proceedings of 25th International Linear Accelerator Conference (LINAC 2010) (CD-ROM), p.887 - 889, 2010/09

This paper describes the present status, technical specifications, operating experience, and upgrade plane for the power supply system (PS system) for the klystrons in the J-PARC. The PS systems include both the high voltage DC power supplies (DCPSs), which drives one or four modulating-anode klystron each, and the anode-modulators, one per klystron. Currently, the energy output of the J-PARC linac is 181 MeV, which includes the energy necessary to run twenty 324 MHz klystrons. In 2012, the linac will add twenty-five 972 MHz klystrons and upgrade the energy output to 400 MeV.

Design of the pulse bending magnet for switching the painting area between the MLF and MR in J-PARC 3-GeV RCS

Takayanagi, Tomohiro; Yoshimoto, Masahiro; Watanabe, Masao; Saha, P. K.; Ueno, Tomoaki; Togashi, Tomohito; Yamazaki, Yoshio; Kinsho, Michikazu; Fujimori, Hiroshi*; Irie, Yoshiro*

Proceedings of 1st International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC '10) (Internet), p.3293 - 3295, 2010/05

It has been designed the pulse bending magnet for switching the painting area to the MLF and MR, which is located in injection line area in J-PARC 3-GeV RCS. After upgrading the linac energy to 400 MeV, the two pulse magnets switch the injection beam orbit to change the each painting area by each shot of 25 Hz. The magnetic field strength switching by 25 Hz are required for the painting injection. Furthermore, in the case of the beam commissioning of the 3-GeV RCS, the center injection is performed. Therefore, the wide range of the beam bending angle from 3 mrad to 38 mrad is required for the pulse magnets.

Proceedings of 1st International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC '10) (Internet), p.3927 - 3929, 2010/05

The ($underline{H}$)ybrid type thick ($underline{B}$)oron-doped ($underline{C}$)arbon (HBC) stripping foils are installed and used for the beam injection at the 3GeV RCS (Rapid Cycling Synchrotron) in J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex). Up to now, the performance deterioration of the stripping foils can not be seen after the long beam irradiation for the 120kW user operation and 300kW high power beam demonstration at the RCS. In order to examine the characteristic of the HBC foils, various beam studies were carried out. The beam-irradiated spot at the foil was measured by scanning the foil setting position, the charge exchange efficiency was evaluated with various thickness foils, and the effect of the SiC fibers supporting the foil mounting was checked with different mounting foils. Beam study results obtained with using the HBC foils will be presented. In addition, the trends of outgas from the stripping foils and the deformations of the foils during the beam irradiation will be reported.

Fibroblast growth factor (FGF)23 is proposed to play a physiological role in the regulation of phosphate and vitamin D metabolism; deranged circulatory levels of FGF23 cause several diseases with abnormal mineral metabolism. We developed two antibodies (FN1 and FC1) that recognize the N- and C-terminal regions of FGF23, respectively. Both FN1 and FC1 inhibited FGF23 activity in a cell-based Klotho-dependent reporter assay. The present study using neutralizing antibodies confirms that FGF23 is a physiological regulator of phosphate and vitamin D metabolism. Then, we addressed the mechanism of action for these neutralizing antibodies. Structural analysis of the FGF23/FN1-Fab complex revealed that FN1 masked putative FGF receptor-binding sites in the N-terminal domain of FGF23, while biochemical analyses showed that FC1 interfered with the association between FGF23 and Klotho by binding to the C-terminal domain of FGF23. Taken together, our results suggest that the N- and C-terminal domains of FGF23 are responsible for association with cognate FGF receptors and Klotho, respectively, and that these interactions are indispensable for FGF23 activity.
