In recent years, natural hazard triggered technological accidents (Natech) have been increasingly recognized as serious concerns. For Natech risk assessment, it is important to understand the relationship between structural failure modes and the functional performance of industrial systems; however, experimental data on piping failure modes remain limited. The authors previously conducted shaking table tests on piping specimens and observed a few different failure modes depending on the combination of input acceleration and dead weight. In this study, the relationship between failure modes and bending moment generated by the response acceleration and dead weight is investigated. The results show that the experimentally observed failure-mode condition exhibit shapes similar to constant-moment curves. This suggests that the variation in failure modes can be interpreted from the viewpoint of moment-based bahaviour.
