Fusion barrier distributions were extracted from these data, and compared with the coupled-channels calculations. It was found that the peak energies of the barrier distributions for the Ca + Pb and Ti + Pb systems coincide with those of the 2n evaporation channel cross sections for the systems, while that of the Ca + Cm is located slightly below the 4n evaporation ones. This results provide us helpful information to predict the optimum beam energy to synthesize superheavy nuclei.

The latest highlight is the formation of very volatile hexacarbonyl compound of element 106, Sg(CO). Following this success, second-generation experiments were performed to measure the first bond dissociation energy between the central metal atom and the surrounding ligand. The method using a tubular decomposition reactor was developed and successfully applied to short-lived Mo(CO), W(CO), and Sg(CO).

For the research and development of the nuclear waste disposal concept suitable to the pyrochemical processing system and its performance evaluation, the iron-phosphate glass is examined as an alternative waste form for high level waste generated from electro-refining process. In order to enhance the waste element content in the glass matrix and improve the durability of the waste form, optimization experiments of the glass composition were carried out and the effect of additional other transition metal oxides was found out in this study.

Photons and charged particles were measured by the PHENIX experiment. Event structure was compared with the results from PYTHIA event generator. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. We measured = -0.0014 0.0037 at the lowest bin and -0.0181 0.0282 at the highest bin. The measured is compared with the predictions that assume various distributions.

We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as and scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to collisions.

The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Surface structures of iron phosphate glasses (IPG) are investigated in order to know the origin of the high chemical durability using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In this study, several IPG samples in which a part of iron oxide are replaced by other transition metal oxides are prepared and subjected to the chemical durability test. Surface structures are investigated before and after the durability test and the information on the structural changes are obtained.

Astatine (At) is reported to be bound in a few oxidation states in aqueous solutions. However, their valencies and chemical species are experimentally not identified. In this study, we studied redox behavior of At using redox agents and using a flow electrolytic column. At was produced in the Bi(, 2)At reaction and was then separated from the target by a distillation method. Then, redox of At was carried out in 1.0 M HClO using redox agents or by an electrolysis. After the redox, solvent extraction with HDEHP was performed to identify the redox reactions. Using the redox agents, extraction yields of At were different between the conditions with oxidizing or reducing agents and without redox agents. This means that redox reactions of At can be identified under the present extraction conditions. On the other hand, by the electrolysis, extraction yields of At were almost constant against the variation of applied potential. This is possibly due to the restoration to the original oxidation state after the electrolysis. In the future, we will perform flow electrolytic column chromatography available for simultaneous electrolysis and separation.
