We investigated the electronic structure of the Mg$$_{99.2}$$Zn$$_{0.2}$$Y$$_{0.6}$$ alloy using hard and soft X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and electronic band structure calculations to understand the mechanism of the phase stability of this material. Electronic structure of the Mg$$_{99.2}$$Zn$$_{0.2}$$Y$$_{0.6}$$ alloy showed a semi-metallic electronic structure with a pseudo-gap at the Fermi level. The observed electronic structure of the Mg$$_{99.2}$$Zn$$_{0.2}$$Y$$_{0.6}$$ alloy suggests that the presence of a pseudogap structure is responsible for phase stability.

With upgraded detectors at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), it has become possible to measure hadrons beyond their ground states in high energy heavy ion collisions. Therefore, heavy ion collisions provide a new method for studying exotic hadrons that are either molecular states made of various hadrons or compact system consisting of muliquarks. Because their structures are related to the fundamental properties of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), studying exotic hadrons is currently one of the most active areas of research in hadron physics. The present review is a summary of the current understanding of a selected set of exotic candidate particles that can be potentially measured in heavy ion collisions.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

Radioactive waste management in O-arai Research and Development Center

Maeda, Atsushi; Kowata, Koichi; Yamazaki, Yasuo; Takahashi, Kozo; Okubo, Toshiyuki; Miyazaki, Hitoshi

Dekomisshoningu Giho, (33), p.58 - 66, 2006/03

By the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), designed decommissioning of nuclear facility and the treatment and disposal of radioactive waste will be carried out systematically and efficiently as responsibility as the installer of the nuclear power facility and generator of radioactive waste. This paper shows the present status of radioactive waste management in O-arai Research and Development Center, one of the research and development bases of JAEA. The management of low-level radioactive waste, including those accepted from outside operator of O-arai district, is carried out by the major premise of ensuring safety at O-arai Waste Management Facility. Treatment related to volume reduction and stabilization by means such as incineration and compression of solid waste, and solidification of liquid, as well as waste storage management is steadfastly promoted, so that these substances may be adequately stored and managed until they are disposed of.

Recently, we found that photo-induced particle formation of Pd$$^{2+}$$ was promoted by coexistence of molybdenum anion in aqueous solution. In this study, we performed in-situ time-resolved XAFS measurement in the photoreduction of Pd$$^{2+}$$ in presence of various concentration of molybdenum anion. The effect of molybdenum addition on photo-induced particle formation of Pd will be discussed based on the relationship between the photoreduction rate of Pd$$^{2+}$$ and the concentration of molybdenum anion.
