Cancer therapy using heavy ion beam has been adopted as highly advanced medical treatment by reason of its clinical advantages. It has become more important to estimate the risk of secondary cancer from recent survey. During treatment, secondary particles such as neutrons and -rays are producedby heavy ion induced nuclear reactions in a patient body as well as beam delivery apparatuses. For the risk assessment of secondary cancer, it is essential to know contribution of secondary neutrons by extra dose to organs in the vicinity of the irradiated tumor because the secondary neutron has a long flight path length and gives undesired dose to normal tissues in a wide volume. The experimental data of neutron energy spectra are required for dose estimations with high accuracy. Especially, precise data around neutron energy of 1 MeV is required because neutron of the energy region has a large relative biological eectiveness. Estimation of the secondary neutron yield data is important for estimation of radiation safety on both of workers and public in treatment facilities.

Particle transport Monte Carlo codes such as PHITS, FLUKA and so on are used for radiation safety design of high energy accelerators. The validity of code is confirmed by comparison with many experimental data. In this study, we report proton, deuteron, and triton production double differential cross sections (DDXs) from a graphite target by 290 MeV/nucleon Ar ions. The measured spectra are compared with those calculated by PHITS and FLUKA codes.

Times Cited Count:4 Percentile:38.2(Instruments & Instrumentation)The energy spectra of neutrons were measured by a time-of-flight method for 120 GeV protons on thick graphite, aluminum, copper, and tungsten targets with an NE213 scintillator at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility. Neutron energy spectra were obtained between 25 and 3000 MeV at emission angles of 30, 45, 120, and 150. The spectra were parameterized as neutron emissions from three moving sources and then compared with theoretical spectra calculated by PHITS and FLUKA codes. The yields of the theoretical spectra were substantially underestimated compared with the yields of measured spectra. The integrated neutron yields from 25 to 3000 MeV calculated with PHITS code were 16-36% of the experimental yields and those calculated with FLUKA code were 26-57% of the experimental yields for all targets and emission angles.

Neutron energy spectra at 15 and 90 produced from carbon, aluminum, copper and tungsten targets bombarded with 120-GeV protons were measured at Fermilab Test Beam Facility (FTBF) for the validation of simulation codes. The target thicknesses were 60 cm for graphite, 50 cm for aluminum, 20, 40, and 60 cm for copper and 10 cm for tungsten, respectively. The neutron time-of-flight measurements were performed using an NE213 organic liquid scintillator at 5.2 m for 90 and 8.0 m for 15 measuring from the center of the target to the surface of the detector. The raw signals (waveforms) obtained from photomultiplier tubes were recorded using the 10 bit digitizer (Agilent-acqiris DC282) with 0.5 ns sampling and 500 ns duration. To compare the experimental results, Monte Carlo calculations with the PHITS, MARS and FLUKA codes were performed. It was found that these calculated results underestimate the experimental results in the whole energy range.

Photons and charged particles were measured by the PHENIX experiment. Event structure was compared with the results from PYTHIA event generator. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. We measured = -0.0014 0.0037 at the lowest bin and -0.0181 0.0282 at the highest bin. The measured is compared with the predictions that assume various distributions.

Times Cited Count:7 Percentile:49.81(Physics, Nuclear)Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to collisions.

The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, and , determining the high and characterizing the low regions for the spectra, respectively. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

Muons become important particle for radiation safety design of high energy and intense accelerator since muons penetrate a thick shielding wall. In this study, the dose rate distributions around high intensity muon beam were measured at the muon alcoves and the bypass tunnel of Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) facility in Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). The dosimeters of Luxel budges (OSL, CR39) and TLD budges (UD813PQ) were placed in the second, third and forth alcoves to measure muons, photons, and, thermal and fast neutrons. Neutrons and photons were measured in the bypass tunnel using a Bonner sphere and an ionization chamber. The spatial distribution of muons is calculated using MARS code. The results of dosimeters show same spatial distribution including attenuation along the beam line in comparison with the calculation results.

In spite of spatial fluctuations of the critical current density on the macroscopic scale, it is shown that the major contribution comes from collective pinning of vortex lines by microscopic defects by the mean-free path fluctuation mechanism. The defect density extracted from experiment corresponds to the dopant atom density, which means that dopant atoms play an important role both in vortex pinning and in quasi-particle scattering.

The layered rock-salt structural materials, LiMO (M=Ni, Co, etc.) are promising candidates as cathodes in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These materials are defective in their electrochemical properties because their structures and thermal propertiesare unstable during the lithium (de)intercalation process. However, the substituted Li(Ni,Co,Al)O system shows the good electrochemical and thermal properties. The Mg doped system, Li(M,Mg)O, also shows good cycle stabilities. In this study, the effect of Mg doping into the Li(Ni,Co,Al,Mg)O system was studied with Mg compositions between 0 Mg 0.1. In this presentation, the detailed structure will be discussed.

The inelastic scattering intensity along Q-axis at T = 140 K exhibits a prominent asymmetric peak ascribed to (, , ) magnetic rod, suggesting the two-dimensionality of the spin density wave.
