The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

Spin dynamics in manganese oxides; Double-exchange interaction and orbital ordering

Kajimoto, Ryoichi; Yoshizawa, Hideki*

Radioisotopes, 65(9), p.393 - 401, 2016/09

Manganese oxides with cubic perovskite structure, AMnO$$_3$$, are famous materials where the so-called colossal magnetoresistance effect arises upon hole doping on Mn sites. The materials are regarded as a typical system where coupling of degrees of freedom of spin, orbital, and charge induces a variety of physical properties. The fundamental properties of this system and the typical magnetic and orbital orderings are briefly described. Inelastic neutron scattering studies of the spin waves to clarify the influence of the double-exchange interaction and the orbital orderings on the magnetic interactions are reviewed.

Single-crystal neutron diffraction study was performed for anomalous antiferromagnetic ordering in a heavy-electron superconductor CeNiGe$$_{3}$$. We observed incommensurate magnetic Bragg reflections characterized with the propagation vector of $$k_{2}$$ = (0; 0:41; 1=2) below the N$'e$el temperature of 5 K, while there is no significant magnetic reflection at the commensurate propagation vector of $$k_{1}$$ = (1; 0; 0) at which another magnetic reflection was observed in the previous neutron diffraction study with a polycrystalline sample. From the single crystal study, we suggest that the magnetic phase of CeNiGe$$_{3}$$ at ambient pressure is characterized only by the incommensurate propagation vector $$k_{2}$$.

Fractal dimension in percolating Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Ito, Shinichi*; Kajimoto, Ryoichi; Adams, M. A.*; Bull, M. J.*; Iwasa, Kazuaki*; Aso, Naofumi*; Yoshizawa, Hideki*; Takeuchi, Tetsuya*

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 310(2, Part2), p.1549 - 1551, 2007/03

We investigated static and dynamical properties in the three-dimensional percolating Heisenberg antiferromagnets, RbMn$$_c$$Mg$$_{1-c}$$F$$_3$$, with the magnetic concentration close to the percolation threshold, $$c_P = 0.312$$, around the superlattice point well below $$T_N$$. In neutron diffraction experiment, the wave number dependence of the elastic scattering component was well fitted to $$q^{-x}$$. Magnetic fractons were also studied using inelastic neutron scattering, and the observed fractons showed the dispersion relation of $$q^z$$. The determined exponents, $$x = 2.43 pm 0.05$$ and $$z = 2.5 pm 0.1$$, were in good agreement with the fractal dimension ($$D_f = 2.48$$).

Magnon excitations have been investigated for PrMnO$$_{3}$$ showing the $textit{A}$-type antiferromagnetic ordering and TbMnO$$_{3}$$ forming a long-period spin ordering by inelastic neutron scattering. Combined with a result of LaMnO$$_{3}$$ [K.~Hirota $textit{et al.}$], the systematic data revealed that the ferromagnetic exchange interaction between nearest-neighbor (NN) Mn sites within the $$ab$$ plane drastically decreases in $$R$$MnO$$_{3}$$ as the ionic radius of $$R$$ is reduced. In addition, finite next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) coupling is evident in TbMnO$$_{3}$$. In contrast, the exchange interaction along the $$c$$ axis shows much weaker $$R$$ dependence consistent with the Mn-O-Mn bond angle. These observations confirm a scenario that explains the evolution of spin structures in $$R$$MnO$$_{3}$$ in terms of the competition between the NN and NNN interactions [T.Kimura $textit{et al.}$].

Spin wave and orbital ordering in the C-type antiferromagnetic phase of Nd$$_{1-x}$$Sr$$_{x}$$MnO$$_{3}$$

Kajimoto, Ryoichi; Yoshizawa, Hideki*; Kawasaki, Ryuichi*; Noda, Kohei*; Kuwahara, Hideki*

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 74(1), p.502 - 503, 2005/01

The spin wave dispersion relation of the C-type antiferromagnetic structure in Nd$$_{0.25}$$Sr$$_{0.75}$$MnO$$_{3}$$ was determined by neutron scattering. The spin exchange interactions show a large anisotropy, which evidences the d$$_{3z^2-r^2}$$ orbital ordering along the $$c$$ axis. The exchange interaction along the $$c$$ direction is fairly large and similar to the value in the ferromagnetic metallic phase, suggesting there is finite hopping of charges along the orbital chains.
