Modeling the future spatial patterns of monogenetic volcanoes is problematic because new vents usually develop in regions where previous vents did not exist. Other characteristics include: (1) the tendency to cluster; (2) the formation of vent alignments and (3) shifts in new alignment location with time. In this paper an improved probabilistic model based on point processes is proposed that is more sensitive to (2) and (3) than pervious models developed so far.

Case studies utilizing probabilistic analyses were performed for the first time in Japanon the Oginosen-Kannabe and Higashi-Izu Monogenetic Volcano Groups (MVG). Application of a spatial (kernel estimation technique) and a spatio-temporal (nearest-neighbor method) were used to construct contoured probability maps of both regions. An improved spatio-temporal model was developed that; (1) does not place the highest probability over the locations of the vents of monogenetic volcanoes (aweakness in current models), and (2) better reflects shallow structural features and/or dike alignments.

This report describes a summary of the workshop on SEE project (Shaft Excavation Effects Project). The workshop was held in Toki-city on, 30 November 1992. The purpose of this workshop is to summarize the results of SEE project, and to exchange information and to promote mutual understanding between research workers of universities, private corporations and staff of PNC. These proceedings reproduce the papers presented at the workshop, together with a summary of the discussions and copies of all papers that are concerned with SEE project and are currently published.
