The BCC $$rightarrow$$ FCC hierarchical martensite transformation under dynamic impact in FeMnAlNiTi alloy

The quasi-static superelastic responses and hierarchical martensite transformation from body-centered cubic (BCC) to face-centered cubic (FCC) under dynamic impact in Fe$$_{42}$$Mn$$_{34}$$Al$$_{15}$$Ni$$_{7.5}$$Ti$$_{1.5}$$ alloys were investigated. Polycrystalline and oligocrystalline alloys were produced through solution heat treatment and cyclic heat treatment processes, respectively. The results show the volume fraction of residual martensite for oligocrystalline alloys is lower, which exhibits better superelastic responses compared with polycrystalline alloys. Dynamic impact tests indicate that, despite the weakening of the grain boundary strengthening effect, the ultimate strength of the oligocrystalline alloys closely matches that of the polycrystalline alloys under dynamic impact. The martensite transformation of the FeMnAlNiTi alloy is characterized as hierarchical under dynamic impact, and increasing strain rates and grain sizes can enhance the BCC $$rightarrow$$ FCC martensite transformation, resulting in higher martensite phase fractions for oligocrystalline alloys. The increase in ultimate strength is attributed to the dynamic Hall-Petch effect introduced by more martensite phase interfaces under dynamic impact.

The grain orientation-dependent lattice strain evolution of a (TiZrHfNb)$$_{98}$$$$N_2$$ refractory high-entropy alloy (HEA) during tensile loading has been investigated using ${it in situ}$ neutron diffraction. The equivalent strain-hardening rate of each of the primary $$<hkl>$$-oriented grain families was found to be relatively low, manifesting the macroscopically weak work-hardening ability of such a body-centered cubic (BCC)-structured HEA. This finding is indicative of a dislocation planar slip mode that is confined in a few single-slip planes and leads to in-plane softening by high pile-up stresses.

Direct observation of topological magnon polarons in a multiferroic material

Magnon polarons are novel elementary excitations possessing hybrid magnonic and phononic signatures, and are responsible for many exotic spintronic and magnonic phenomena. Despite long-term sustained experimental efforts in chasing for magnon polarons, direct spectroscopic evidence of their existence is hardly observed. Here, we report the direct observation of magnon polarons using neutron spectroscopy on a multiferroic Fe$$_{2}$$Mo$$_{3}$$O$$_{8}$$ possessing strong magnon-phonon coupling. Specifically, below the magnetic ordering temperature, a gap opens at the nominal intersection of the original magnon and phonon bands, leading to two separated magnon-polaron bands. Each of the bands undergoes mixing, interconverting and reversing between its magnonic and phononic components. We attribute the formation of magnon polarons to the strong magnon-phonon coupling induced by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Intriguingly, we find that the band-inverted magnon polarons are topologically nontrivial. These results uncover exotic elementary excitations arising from the magnon-phonon coupling, and offer a new route to topological states by considering hybridizations between different types of fundamental excitations.

A Large-scale particle-based simulation of heat and mass transfer behavior in EAGLE ID1 in-pile test

The in-pile EAGLE ID1 test was conducted by Japan Atomic Energy Agency to demonstrate the effectiveness of the fuel assembly with an internal duct structure during a core disruptive accident in a sodium-cooled fast reactor. In this study, a new computational fluid dynamics code based on the fully Lagrangian particle method was developed for the purpose of clarifying the failure mechanism of the inner duct wall of FAIDUS. The three-dimensional simulation of the ID1 test was performed to analyze a series of thermal hydraulic behaviors leading up to duct wall failure for a computational domain that included six fuel pins. The simulations reasonably reproduced the heat transfer characteristics observed in the test, showing that the local contact of liquid steel with high thermal conductivity with the duct wall greatly enhances the heat transfer from the nuclear heating fuel to the duct wall. The results support the validity of the conclusions of our analytical study regarding the molten pool-to-duct wall heat transfer mechanism that caused the thermal failure of the duct wall.

現在の蒸気圧縮式冷凍機に代わる環境に優しい冷凍機として、バロカロリック効果に基づく固体冷凍機が世界的に注目されている。一般に、バロカロリック効果が発現する相はいずれも常圧でも存在する。ここでは、それらの物質と違って、KPF$$_{6}$$が高圧の菱面体晶相を生成することにより、巨大なバロカロリック効果を示すことを実証した。相図は、圧力依存の熱量測定、ラマン散乱測定、中性子回折測定に基づいて構築されたものである。本研究は、巨大バロカロリー効果に、高圧相の生成という新たな手法をもたらすと期待される。

Tensile overload-induced texture effects on the fatigue resistance of a CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy

The present study investigates the crystallographic-texture effects on the improved fatigue resistance in the CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with the full-size geometry of the ASTM Standards E647-99. We exploited X-ray nano-diffraction mapping to characterize the crystal-deformation levels ahead of the crack tip after stress unloading under both constant- and tensile overloaded-fatigue conditions. The crack-tip blunting-induced much higher deformation level was concentrated surrounding the crack-tip which delays the fatigue-crack growth immediately after a tensile overload. The predominant deformation texture orientation in the Paris regime was investigated, using electron backscatter diffraction and orientation distribution function analyses. The twinning formation-driven shear deformation gave rise to the development of the Goss-type texture within the plastic deformation regime under a tensile-overloaded-fatigue condition, which was attributed to enhance the crack deflection and thus the tensile induced crack-growth-retardation period in the CoCrFeMnNi HEA.

The ID1 test was the final target test of the EAGLE experimental framework program. It was used to verify that during a core disruptive accident, the molten fuel could be discharged via wall failure of an inner duct in FAIDUS, a design concept for the sodium-cooled fast reactor. The ID1 results revealed that the wall failure behavior owed to the large heat flow from the surrounding fuel/steel mixture. The present study numerically investigated the heat transfer mechanisms in the test using the finite volume particle method in the three-dimensional domain. The thermal hydraulic behaviors during wall failure were reproduced reasonably. The present three-dimensional simulation mitigated inherent defects of our previous two-dimensional calculation and clarified that the solid fuel and liquid steel close to the outer surface of the duct can expose the duct to high thermal loads, resulting in the wall failure.

Soil warming effects on soil organic carbon (SOC) decomposition and stabilization are highly variable, and the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, concentration, stability (dissolved, particle and mineral-associated SOC), and source (plant-derived and microbial-derived) of SOC, soil microbial community composition, and enzyme activities were studied in a 10-year soil warming field experiment in an East Asian monsoon forest. The results showed that 10-year soil warming significantly enhanced SOC in the top 0-10 cm soil. The increased SOC induced by warming was mainly derived from plants with lignin markers, accompanied by a decrease in microbial-derived SOC. This highlights an urgent need for a better understanding of how the contrasting effects of plant- and microbial-derived C mediate the response of the SOC pool to warming across different biomes.

Status of the uncertainty quantification for severe accident sequences of different NPP-designs in the frame of the H-2020 project MUSA

The current HORIZON-2020 project on "Management and Uncertainties of Severe Accidents (MUSA)" aims at applying Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) in the modeling of Severe Accidents (SA), particularly in predicting the radiological source term of mitigated and unmitigated accident scenarios. Within its application part, the project is devoted to the uncertainty quantification of different severe accident codes when predicting the radiological source term of selected severe accident sequences of different nuclear power plant designs, e.g. PWR, VVER, and BWR. Key steps for this investigation are, (a) the selection of severe accident sequences for each reactor design, (b) the development of a reference input model for the specific design and SA-code, (c) the selection of a list of uncertain model parameters to be investigated, (d) the choice of an UQ-tool e.g. DAKOTA, SUSA, URANIE, etc., (e) the definition of the figures of merit for the UA-analysis, (f) the performance of the simulations with the SA-codes, and, (g) the statistical evaluation of the results using the capabilities, i.e. methods and tools offered by the UQ-tools. This paper describes the project status of the UQ of different SA codes for the selected SA sequences, and the technical challenges and lessons learnt from the preparatory and exploratory investigations performed.

Strain hardening behavior of additively manufactured and annealed AlSi3.5Mg2.5 alloy

The ductility of the Al alloys produced by additive manufacturing (AM) has become a critical property, as the AM Al alloys are increasingly used in the automotive industry. However, the ductility of as-built AM Al alloys is relatively low, even with optimized AM conditions. The post-annealing treatment provides an efficient way to improve ductility. Previous investigation has shown that the annealed AM AlSi3.5Mg2.5 alloy possesses superior ductility. However, the plastic deformation micro-mechanisms of the annealed AM AlSi3.5Mg2.5 alloy remain unclear. In this study, in-situ neutron diffraction was employed to explore the annealed AM AlSi3.5Mg2.5 alloy. The evolutions of phase stresses, dislocation density, and crystallite size in the annealed AM AlSi3.5Mg2.5 alloy during tensile deformation were analyzed. The experimental investigation reveals that the dislocation density in the Al matrix of the annealed AM AlSi3.5Mg2.5 alloy increases slowly in the early plastic deformation stage, and it reaches a saturated level upon the following uniform deformation. The crystallite size decreases quickly in the early deformation stage, and then it decreases slowly. The Kocks-Mecking model and the Voce model can capture the strain hardening behavior well. The determined physical constitutive equations can be applied in continuum mechanical computer simulations.

物性測定と中性子散乱を組み合わせることにより、面心立方高エントロピー合金CrMnFeCoNiの磁気および熱輸送特性を調べた。DCおよびAC帯磁率は、温度領域全体で反強磁性および強磁性相互作用が共存する常磁性挙動を示し、それぞれ、常磁性から反強磁性への遷移、反強磁性から強磁性への遷移、およびスピン凍結に対応して、約80, 50、および20Kで3つの異常が見られる。電気伝導率と熱伝導率はNiに比べて大幅に低下しており、格子熱伝導率の温度依存性はガラスのようなプラトーを示す。非弾性中性子散乱測定は弱い非調和性を示唆し、熱輸送は欠陥散乱によって支配されると思われる。

Magnons can transfer information in metals and insulators without Joule heating, and therefore are promising for low-power computation. The on-chip magnonics however suffers from high losses due to limited magnon decay length. In metallic thin films, it is typically on the tens of micrometre length scale. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-long magnon decay length of up to one millimetre in multiferroic/ferromagnetic BiFeO$$_{3}$$(BFO)/La$$_{0.67}$$Sr$$_{0.33}$$MnO$$_{3}$$ (LSMO) heterostructures at room temperature. This decay length is attributed to a magnon-phonon hybridization and is more than two orders of magnitude longer than that of bare metallic LSMO. The long-distance modes have high group velocities of 2.5 km$$^{-1}$$ as detected by time-resolved Brillouin light scattering. Numerical simulations suggest that magnetoelastic coupling via the BFO/LSMO interface hybridizes phonons in BFO with magnons in LSMO. Our results provide a solution to the long-standing issue on magnon decay lengths in metallic magnets and advance the bourgeoning field of hybrid magnonics.

Field-tuned magnetic structure and phase diagram of the honeycomb magnet YbCl$$_3$$

We report thermodynamic and neutron diffraction measurements on the magnetic ordering properties of the honeycomb lattice magnet YbCl$$_3$$. We find YbCl$$_3$$ exhibits a N${'e}$el type long-range magnetic order at the wavevector (0, 0, 0) below T$$_N$$ = 600 mK. This magnetic order is associated with a small sharp peak in heat capacity and most magnetic entropy release occurs above the magnetic ordering temperature. The magnetic moment lies in-plane, parallel to the monoclinic a-axis, whose magnitude m$$_{rm Yb}$$ = 0.86(3) $$mu_B$$ is considerably smaller than the expected fully ordered moment of 2.24 $$mu_B$$ for the doublet crystal-field ground state. The magnetic ordering moment gradually increases with increasing magnetic field perpendicular to the ab-plane, reaching a maximum value of 1.6(2) $$mu_B$$ at 4 T, before it is completely suppressed above $$sim$$9 T. These results indicate the presence of strong quantum fluctuations in YbCl$$_3$$.

Coordination number regulation of molybdenum single-atom nanozyme peroxidase-like specificity

Nanozymes are promising alternatives to natural enzymes, but their use remains limited owing to poor specificity. Overcoming this is extremely challenging due to the intrinsic structural complexity of these systems. We report theoretical design and experimental realization of a series of heterogeneous molybdenum single-atom nanozymes (named Mo$$_{rm{SA}}$$-N$$_{x}$$-C), wherein we find that the peroxidase-like specificity is well regulated by the coordination numbers of single Mo sites. The resulting Mo$$_{rm{SA}}$$-N$$_{3}$$-C catalyst shows exclusive peroxidase-like behavior. It achieves this behavior via a homolytic pathway, whereas Mo$$_{rm{SA}}$$-N$$_{2}$$-C and Mo$$_{rm{SA}}$$-N$$_{4}$$-C catalysts have a different heterolytic pathway. The mechanism of this coordination-number-dependent enzymatic specificity is attributed to geometrical structure differences and orientation relationships of the frontier molecular orbitals.

Stacking fault driven phase transformation in CrCoNi medium entropy alloy

In CrCoNi, a so-called medium-entropy alloy, an fcc-to-hcp phase transformation has long been anticipated. Here, we report an in situ loading study with neutron diffraction, which revealed a bulk fcc-to-hcp phase transformation in CrCoNi at 15 K under tensile loading. By correlating deformation characteristics of the fcc phase with the development of the hcp phase, it is shown that the nucleation of the hcp phase was triggered by intrinsic stacking faults. The confirmation of a bulk phase transformation adds to the myriads of deformation mechanisms available in CrCoNi, which together underpin the unusually large ductility at low temperatures.

Numerical simulation of heat transfer behavior in EAGLE ID1 in-pile test using finite volume particle method

The EAGLE ID1 test was performed by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency to demonstrate the effectiveness of fuel discharge from a fuel subassembly with an inner duct structure. The experimental results suggested that the early duct wall failure observed in the test was initiated by high heat flux from the molten pool comprising liquid fuel and steel. In addition, the post-test analyses showed that the high heat flux may be enhanced effectively by molten steel in the pool. In this study, a series of thermal-hydraulic behaviors in the ID1 test was analyzed to investigate the mechanisms of molten pool-to-duct wall heat transfer using a fully Lagrangian approach based on the finite volume particle method. The present 2D particle-based simulation demonstrated that a large thermal load on the duct wall can be caused by direct contact of the liquid fuel with nuclear heat and high-temperature liquid steel.

Quantifying internal strains, stresses, and dislocation density in additively manufactured AlSi10Mg during loading-unloading-reloading deformation

Here, in-situ neutron diffraction is employed to explore the residual strains, stresses, and dislocation density in the LPBF AlSi10Mg during loading-unloading-reloading deformation. It is found that the maximum residual stresses of the Al and Si phases in the loading direction reach up to about -115 (compressive) and 832 (tensile) MPa, respectively. A notable dislocation annihilation phenomenon is observed in the Al matrix: the dislocation density decreases significantly during unloading stages, and the amplitude of this reduction increases after experiencing a larger plastic deformation. At the macroscale, this dislocation annihilation phenomenon is associated with the reverse strain after unloading. At the microscale, the annihilation phenomenon is driven by the compressive residual stress in the Al matrix. Meanwhile, the annihilation of screw dislocations during unloading stages contributes to the reduction in total dislocation density.

Fine structure in the $$alpha$$ decay of $$^{223}$$U

Fine structure in the $$alpha$$ decay of $$^{223}$$U was observed in the fusion-evaporation reaction $$^{187}$$Re($$^{40}$$Ar,p3n) by using fast digital pulse processing technique. Two $$alpha$$-decay branches of $$^{223}$$U feeding the ground state and 244 keV excited state of $$^{219}$$Th were identified by establishing the decay chain $$^{223}$$U$$rightarrow$$$$^{219}$$Th$$rightarrow$$$$^{215}$$Ra$$rightarrow$$$$^{211}$$Rn. The $$alpha$$-particle energy for the ground-state to ground-state transition of $$^{223}$$U was determined to be 8993(17) keV, 213 keV higher than the previous value, the half-life was updated to be 62$$^{+14}_{-10} mu$$s. Evolution of nuclear structure for $$N$$=131 even-$$Z$$ isotones from Po to U was discussed in the frameworks of nuclear mass and reduced $$alpha$$-decay width, a weakening octupole deformation in the ground state of $$^{223}$$U relative to its lighter isotones $$^{219}$$Ra and $$^{211}$$Th was suggested.

2017年4月に開催された国際会議Transport2017において、重イオン核反応モデルの国際的な比較が議論された。重イオン加速器の安全評価や宇宙飛行士の被ばく評価等で重要な役割を果たすため、世界中で重イオン核反応の様々な理論モデルが開発されている。本研究では、辺の長さが20fmの直方体に320個の中性子と陽子をランダム配置し、それらが70fm/cの間に起こす散乱の回数やエネルギーを計算した。ここでは、特にパイオンやその前駆体であるデルタ共鳴の生成に注目して比較を行った。参加コードは、個々の粒子の時間発展を追うQMD型コードと、粒子の位置や運動量の確率分布を決めておき、散乱や崩壊が発生したときそれらを乱数サンプリングするBUU型コードがあり、発表者が用いたJQMDは前者に属する。本研究により、計算における時間刻みが各コードによる結果の差の主な原因であることが分かった。さらに、今後のJQMDの改良方針の策定に有益な知見を得ることができた。
