Mictomagnetism and suppressed thermal conduction of the prototype high-entropy alloy CrMnFeCoNi

Yang, J.*; Ren, W.*; Zhao, X.*; Kikuchi, Tatsuya*; Miao, P.*; Nakajima, Kenji; Li, B.*; Zhang, Z.*

Journal of Materials Science and Technology, 99, p.55 - 60, 2022/02

High-entropy alloys are characteristic of extensive atomic occupational disorder on high-symmetric lattices, differing from traditional alloys. Here, we investigate magnetic and thermal transport properties of the prototype face-centered-cubic high-entropy alloy CrMnFeCoNi by combining physical properties measurements and neutron scattering. Direct-current (dc) and alternating-current (ac) magnetizations measurements indicate a mictomagnetic behavior with coexisting antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions in the entire temperature region and three anomalies are found at about 80, 50, and 20 K, which are related to the paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition, the antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition, and the spin freezing, respectively. The electrical and thermal conductivities are significantly reduced compared to Ni and the temperature dependence of lattice thermal conductivity exhibits a glass-like plateau. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements suggest weak anharmonicity so that the thermal transport is expected to be dominated by the defect scattering.

In high-performance thermoelectric materials, there are two main low thermal conductivity mechanisms: the phonon anharmonic and phonon scattering resulting from the dynamic disorder, which have been successfully revealed by inelastic neutron scattering. Using neutron scattering and ab initio calculations, we report here a mechanism of static local structure distortion combined with phonon-anharmonic-induced ultralow lattice thermal conductivity in $$alpha$$-MgAgSb. Since the transverse acoustic phonons are almost fully scattered by the intrinsic distorted rocksalt sublattice in this compound, the heat is mainly transported by the longitudinal acoustic phonons. The ultralow thermal conductivity in $$alpha$$-MgAgSb is attributed to its atomic dynamics being altered by the structure distortion, which presents a possible microscopic route to enhance the performance of similar thermoelectric materials.

We disclose a new porous electronically conductive membrane, which achieves chemical selectivity by preferred faradaic reaction. This shift in membrane mechanism grants access to a variety of heretofore forbidden choices for positive and negative electrode metals and allows the battery to charge-discharge at high rate without degradation. Fitted with a porous membrane of TiN, a displacement cell comprising a Pb positive electrode, a Li Pb negative electrode, and LiCl-KCl eutectic electrolyte was cycled at 410$$^{circ}$$C and exhibited a coulombic efficiency of 92%. The capacity fade rate was measured to be 0.00172% per cycle, which is tantamount to retention of greater than 94% of initial capacity after 10 years. Most significant from the standpoint of scalability, we show that the faradaic membrane can be fashioned out of metal so as to be mechanically durable and therefore easily mass-produced at large scale with a thin cross-section for minimal ohmic drop in cell voltage.

The temperature and energy dependence of spin excitations in an optimally P-doped BaFe$$_2$$(As$$_{0.7}$$P$$_{0.3}$$)$$_2$$ superconductor (T$$_c$$ = 30 K) were studied by using inelastic neutron scattering. Experimental results are consistent with calculations from a combined density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory, and suggest that the decreased average pnictogen height in BaFe$$_2$$(As$$_{0.7}$$P$$_{0.3}$$)$$_2$$ reduces the strength of electron correlations and increases the effective bandwidth of magnetic excitation.

Defects in electron-irradiated (3, 6 MeV) ZnO substrates were investigated using optical detection of magnetic response (ODMR). The shallow donor and the Zn vacancy were detected. In addition, several ODMR centers with S=$$frac{1}{2}$$ were also observed. Among these, LU3 and LU4 shows a behavior as recombination centers. After annealing at 400$$^{circ}$$C, both LU3 and LU4 still remain in ZnO substrates.

Optical detection of magnetic resonance (ODMR) was performed to investigate defects in ZnO irradiated with 3 MeV electrons at room temperature. As a result, the Zn vacancy and some other centers were detected by ODMR. The Zn vacancy and two other centers whish are labeled as LU3 and LU4, were also commonly observed in different types of as-grown ZnO. Therefore, it can be concluded that the both LU3 and LU4 might be related to intrinsic defects, and they act as dominating recombination centers in irradiated and as-grown ZnO.

Theoretical study on dielectronic recombination of O$$^{6+}$$ ions in metastable states

Zhao, L.-B.*; Shirai, Toshizo

Physical Review A, 64(5), p.052704_1 - 052704_6, 2001/11

A computational scheme, based on the theory of continuum-bound transitions of Bell and Seaton [J. Phys. B $${bf 18}$$, 1589 (1985)] and the close-coupling R-matrix approach, has been developed to treat dielectronic recombination (DR) in high-lying resonance energy regions. This scheme and our presented numerical method to compute DR in low-lying resonance energy regions [Phys. Rev. A $${bf 62}$$, 022706 (2000)] have been applied together to elucidate the experimental spectra of DR of O$$^{6+}$$ ions in the metastable $$1s2s,,^3S$$ and $$1s2s,,^1S$$ states. For comparison, a perturbative theoretical calculation of DR for O$$^{6+}$$ has also been accompanied. The reasonable representation of the general dielectronic spectral shape is yielded by both our close-coupling and perturbative calculations. However, both the methods do not reproduce the experimental double peak structure at $$sim$$ 6-8 eV. This shows that the further investigation on DR of this kind of ions is required both experimentally and theoretically.
