Innovative use of modern diagnostics has revealed the existence of zonal flows, their spatio-temporal characteristics, their relationship with turbulence, and their effects on confinement. Particularly a number of observations have been accumulated on the oscillatory branch of the zonal flow, dubbed as geodesic acoustic modes suggesting necessity of theories to give their proper description. Several new methods have elucidated the zonal flow generation processes from the turbulence. Further investigation of relationship between the zonal flows and confinement is strongly encouraged as cross-device activity.

N synthesized experimentally. With a proper choice of the supercell, cutoff energy, and sampling
points, the cubic phases are found to be stable theoretically. The bulk modulus from elastic stiffness constants for each of the phases is in excellent agreement with available experimental data. The high-density phases are characterized by the existence of C-C bonds, whereas the low-density phase is characterized by the absence of C-C bonds. From the calculated equation of state and the available experimental data, we show that the unique feature of each of the cubic BC
N phases is a direct result of the corresponding local electronic structure and chemical bonding in the system.

A series of experiments studying the productions and their decays of the heaviest elements have been performed by using a gas-filled recoil separator GARIS at RIKEN. Results on the isotope of the 112th element,
112, and on that of the 113th element,
113, are reviewed. Two decay chains which are assigned to be ones originating from the isotope
112 were observed in the
Pb(
Zn, n) reaction. The results provide a confirmation of the production and decay of the isotope
112 reported by a research group at GSI, Germany, produced via the same reaction by using a velocity filter. Two decay chains, both consisted of four consecutive alpha decays followed by a spontaneous fission, were observed also in the reaction
Bi(
Zn, n). Those are assigned to be the convincing candidate events of the isotope of the 113th element,
113, and its daughter nuclei.

Radiation crosslinking of chitin / chitosan derivatives such as carboxymethylchitin (CMCt) and carboxymethylchitosan (CMCts) has been investigated. CMCt and CMCts of 40% concentration were irradiated by electron beams. The maximum gel fraction of those CMCht and CMChts reached 72% (75kGy) and 50% (100kGy) respectively. These gels absorpted water of 8.3g for CMCt and 21.2g for CMCts per 1 g of the dried gel. The absorption ability of various metal ions with these gels has been investigated. The highest adsorption of scandium and gold has been obtained for CMCt and CMCts gels, respectively.

Existence of two kinds of scission configurations associated with symmetric and asymmetric fission modes is pointed out in the fission of actinides: elongated and compact configurations. Each scission property is discussed in terms of shape elongation evaluated from fragment total kinetic energy (TKE). Fragment deformation at scission is also discussed based on neutron multiplicity measurements. From the systematic study of the scission properties in a wide range of actinides, the bimodal fission observed in the spontaneous fission (SF) of the heavy actinides would be interpreted as the result of the presence of the two fission paths; the ordinary asymmetric fission path is still exiting while the symmetric one is bifurcated by strongly shell-influenced effects.
