In decommissioning work, it is essential to evaluate (internal) exposure of workers and dust dispersion. In this report, we describe a sensor under development to measure alpha dust in situ during fuel debris removal in the damaged core (PCV) of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in a harsh environment (high humidity and high radiation dose).

Since 2011, JAEA has conducted extensive radiation monitoring both inside and outside Fukushima Prefecture. The data obtained from these efforts have been instrumental in various applications, including the lifting of evacuation orders in difficult-to-return zones. However, the initial response immediately after the disaster faced challenges such as the earthquake, subsequent power outages, and communication failures, leading to issues in sharing the results of emergency monitoring. Drawing from these experiences, revisions have been made, including updates to the national guidelines for nuclear disaster response. Building on the expertise gained through environmental monitoring in Fukushima, JAEA has been advancing the development of measurement technologies using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Leveraging these technologies, we have established a monitoring and analysis system with a focus on emergency response. In this presentation, we will share the results of applying monitoring techniques refined through Fukushima's experiences to enhance nuclear disaster preparedness.

In order to proceed with the decommissioning of TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, it is necessary to know where and what kind of fuel debris is located in the reactor. JAEA has been developed technologies to estimate the properties (constituent phases and composition) of fuel debris through analysis and estimation. Current status of these efforts will be introduced.

We have so far completed preparations for steadily conducting third-party analysis of ALPS-treated water, and have been conducting ALPS-treated water analysis as a third-party analysis organization in Okuma Analysis and Research Center. And we participated in an interlaboratory comparison test conducted by the Japan Analysis Center (JCAC) and obtained skill certification for analytical engineers. Furthermore, in order to maintain and improve analytical ability and conduct highly accurate analysis, we are working on various initiatives, including aiming to obtain ISO/IEC17025 certification. This report reports on the implementation status of third-party analysis conducted at the Okuma Analysis and Research Center and efforts to ensure reliability.
