Research on history of the fracture formation and fracture filling in the Toki granite was carried out, in the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) Project. It is recognized that some fractures in the Toki granite are related to high temperature fluid. Rock permeability was decreased by Quartz precipitations in the fracture which were related to injection of the high temperature fluid.

High precision noble gas isotope analysis of groundwater is useful to estimate age and origin of groundwater. This study presents measurement of isotope ratio using a multi-collector noble gas mass spectrometer with six collectors and an auto noble gas purification instrument. The results of measurement of neon and helium in trial samples suggest that the mass spectrometer with high precision enable the noble gas isotope analysis of groundwater.

In Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory, groundwater recovery experiment test is performed at a part of research tunnel at 500m depth for research of recovery process of subsurface environment disturbed by construction of subsurface structure. During 2017, three times temporal decompression tests of hydraulic pressure in closure test drift keeping closed condition were conducted. We report the reproductivity of time variation of hydraulic pressure during the tests. We also report the estimation results of hydrogeological structure from the data during tests.

The metabolic activities of microorganisms has potential to contribute for formation and keeping of redox condition in the groundwater. In particular, it is possible that the microbial sulfate reduction has great role in formation of reducing condition. However, in situ observation of the activities of sulfate reducing bacteria in the groundwater has not conducted. In this study, we examined relation of redox condition in groundwater with microbial activities by in situ incubation experiment of sulfate reducing bacteria living in borehole drilled in granitic rock at 300 m below ground level at the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory.
