Seawater was injected into the reactor cores in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F-NPP). Radiation dose is high in the primary containment vessels (PCVs) because of the fuel debris and the fission products. It is considered that corrosion of the reactor pressure vessels and the PCVs is accelerated by the products of water radiolysis. An amount of the injected seawater, temperature, radiation dose in the PCVs of the 1F-NPP and decommissioning plan are shown. Corrosion tests of low alloy steel and carbon steel under -rays irradiation conducted in the Japan Atomic Energy Agency are introduced. Uniform corrosion rates of the steels were hard to be accelerated remarkably in dose levels which were measured in the PCV of the 1F. Moreover, as a way of corrosion prevention, it was effective to have replaced the gaseous phase with N.

I provided a fine review of the progressive development of the rate theory for the analysis of the microstructural evolution of irradiated metallic materials. The impact of cascade damage on the microstructural evolution was highlighted. I also focused on a discussion how the model analysis has been employed to understand the underlying mechanisms behind apparently complicated phenomena, and to make use of the interpretation and prediction of a large amount of experimental data collected so far. In addition, I reported the latest results of a comparative study on a modeling and relevant experiments in terms of the effects of impurity atoms on the microstructural evolution that have been clarified recently.

Digital image correlation technique can monitor local strain deformation on the material surface during mechanical testing and has been developed with conjunction of recent innovation of computer technology. This lecture provides fundamental principle of this technique and brief introduction of recent studies such as characterization of local deformation of weld joint specimen for low-activation ferritic steel by fatigue and evaluation of strength anisotropy of SiC/SiC composites.
