with a thickness of tens micrometer were fabricated on the planar and curved surfaces of graphite substrates by means of electrolysis on a mixture of magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium chloride, and magnesium borate fused at high temperatures in an Ar atmosphere. The electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements revealed that the electroplated MgB
films undergo a superconducting transition with the critical temperature of 36 K.

was found to be a prototype of CdI
by means of powder X-ray diffractometry. Mass-spectrometric experiment was performed in the temperature range of 650-770K. It was found that the vapor pressures of Cd over PuCd
+Pu were three to five orders of magnitude lower than those over Cd in this temperature range. From these vapor pressures, Gibbs free energy of formation of PuCd
was evaluated.

at 773 K were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical dissolution of PuN and (U, Pu)N began nearly at -1.0 V vs. the Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The rest potentials of PuN and (U, Pu)N were observed at about 0.15 V more negative potential than that of UN since the equilibrium potential of UN is about 0.15 V more positive than that of PuN. In the cyclic voltammogram measured by using (U, Pu)N as the working electrode, a steep rise of the positive current was observed at more positive potential than -0.4 V in analogy with the cyclic voltammogram measured by using UN as the working electrode. In addition, there were two anodic current waves in the voltammogram with (U, Pu)N, though the wave form was not clear. This indicates that UN and PuN would be dissolved independently irrespective of formation of the solid solution, (U, Pu)N.

In this work, we have clarified the oxygen potentials (g(O)) vs. oxygen nonstoichiometry (x) and temperature relations of P-type Ce
Zr
O

-Cl
interaction consists of two kinds of interactions; rigid 4-fold tetrahedron and 2-3 loose coordination. The XAFS result shows a local structure is the 4-fold coordination in the melt.

; Ln=La, Nd, Gd) in LiCl-KCl eutectic melt is studied. Some lanthanide oxides have been pointed out to form oxide chlorides (LnOCl) in the chloride melts, according to the reaction, Ln
O
+ 2Cl
= 2LnOCl +O
. Equilibrium of the reaction for Ln = La, Nd, Gd in LiCl-KCl eutectic melt were studied. Entire La
O
and a part of Nd
O
converted to LaOCl and NdOCl respectively, though Gd
O
remained with a trace amount of GdOCl for 2wt % of Ln
O
in LiCl-KCl eutectic melt. The equilibrium depends on the free energies of formation of the solid compounds, Ln
O
and LnOCl, and that of oxide ion (O
) in the melt. We derive the chemical potential of the oxide ion from the equilibrium using the reported thermochemical data of Ln
O
and LnOCl.

Reaction-Bonding (RB) process was employed since this process has a possibility of producing a much denser matrix compared with other processes. SiC fibers, however, adhere strongly to the matrix because of high reactiveness of molten Si with the SiC fiber during RB process. In this study, we investigated the effects of SiC layer as an interphase on fracture behavior in the SiC/SiC. The specimen without an interphase layer showed catastrophic failure behavior while the specimen with SiC interphase layer exhibited non-catastrophic failure behavior by 3-point bending testing. The microstructure observation indicated that SiC fibers did not adhere to the matrix in the specimen with SiC interpahse layer. After 3-point bending testing, the pull-out phenomenon occurred in the SiC/SiC with SiC interphase layer while did not occur in the composite without interphase layer.

The local structure of molten LaCl has been characterized by the octahedral coordination (LaCl
)
. It is based on X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy results. On the other hand, a different structural image was proposed in the neutron diffraction (ND) and the molecular dynamics (MD) studies. These ND and MD works concluded that a coordination behavior changes with cation size in molten rare earth trichlorides. Thus, they reported the coordination number of Cl
ions around La
ion is 8.2 in the ND work and 7.9 in the MD work. In the present work, XRD measurements of molten LaCl
were performed to investigate the local structure. The coordination number of the 1st La
-Cl
pair in molten LaCl
was 7.1 from analysis of the correlation function G(r). The structural change by increasing anion size was examined by the XRD measurement of molten LaBr
. The XRD data were nicely reproduced by the MD simulations with polarizable ionic model.
