Design of a compact focusing lens system with short acceleration tube at 300 kV

A high-demagnification acceleration lens system is developed for a compact apparatus forming gaseous ion nanobeam with an energy ranging from several hundred keV to MeV in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). For gaseous ion nanobeam formation, it is necessary to use a plasma-type ion source. The diameter of the anode through-hole, which is an object in the lens system, in the ion source is several hundred micrometers to extract sufficient ion beams from ion source plasma. Therefore the lens system with the higher demagnification of over 1000 was required to form the nanobeam. In this study, the compact high-energy acceleration lens system up to several hundred keV was designed by combining the double acceleration-lens system already developed in JAEA to form several tens keV gaseous ion nanobeams and an acceleration tube newly designed in this study to boost up its beam energy. Especially since the acceleration tube plays roles of not only the ion beam acceleration but also a final focusing lens, the lens effect of its tube was studied in detail in the design. In the conference, the design of the new lens system based on the ion optical calculation and the specification of the whole system with a duoplasmatron-type ion source will be presented.

放射性核種の環境中での移行における原生動物の役割を明らかにするために、重金属元素を含む試験溶液中でのゾウリムシの挙動を検討した。原生動物の中でその性質が最も知られている単細胞動物であるゾウリムシをモデル生物に選んだ。重金属元素を0.1mM以上含む試験溶液中では、ゾウリムシはほとんど生き残ることができなかった。ゾウリムシ細胞への重金属元素の吸着挙動は、元素及び細胞の生死によって異なった。中性溶液中で24時間後に生き残った細胞には重金属元素はほとんど検出できなかった。あらかじめ乾燥させた細胞と試験溶液を接触させたところPbとUが細胞に明瞭に検出された。この結果は、ゾウリムシの生細胞に重金属元素の吸着を阻止する機能があることを示唆する。

埋め込み酸化膜を有するSOIデバイスは、高い耐放射線性が期待されているが、SOIデバイス特有の基板浮遊効果の影響で、従来のバルクによるSEU発生と異なるソフトエラーが発生するという報告がある。現在はその対策としてボディー電位構造を採用し基板浮遊効果を抑制している。本研究では、この構造を有したSOI SRAMにヘリウム,酸素イオンマイクロビームを照射して、ボディー電位固定構造がソフトエラー耐性に与える影響を検証した。ヘリウムイオン照射ではボディー電位固定構造のため金属パットに近い位置でのソフトエラー発生は少なくなった。これは動作領域での過剰キャリアの生成量がしきい値電荷以下であり、基板浮遊効果を抑制したと考えられる。一方、酸素イオンでは、動作領域での過剰キャリア生成量がしきい値電荷よりも大きいため、ボディー電位固定構造に関係なくソフトエラーの発生が観測された。

Microbeam complex at TIARA; Technologies to meet a wide range of applications

In order to meet wide variety of ion beam applications, three different types of ion microbeam systems were developed. These systems have shown the spatial resolutions of less than 1 $$mu$$m and have made it possible to irradiate minute targets or areas with positioning accuracies of less than 1 $$mu$$m. For micro-analyses, an in-air micro-PIXE system was originally developed on the light ion microbeam system. For micro-fabrication, technique of mask-less ion beam lithography was developed on the light-ion microbeam and other systems. Single-ion-hit technique was also realized to study single-event phenomena in semiconductors or biological cells induced by high-energetic heavy particles. On the other hand, the qualities of the beam from accelerators were important, such as stability of the intensity and the energy of the beams. In this paper, the latest progress and a future prospect of them were discussed.

Fluorine analysis of human enamel around fluoride-containing materials under different pH-cycling by $$mu$$-PIGE/PIXE system

The purpose of this study was to determine F uptake into enamel around FCMs under different pH-cycling using the in-air $$mu$$-PIGE/PIXE system at TIARA. After pH-cycling, the caries progression in all materials was analyzed using transverse microradiography (TMR). The F and calcium distributions of the lesion in each specimen of FCMs were evaluated using PIGE/PIXE system. The amount of F in the outer 150 $$mu$$m of the lesion was then calculated for comparing F uptake. As a result, there was a difference in the caries progression between materials. In clinical setting, it is important to select FCM according to the caries risk. From F analysis, there was no significant difference in the F uptake from each material between the solutions, though there was significant difference between the materials.

The aim of this study was to evaluate dentin bond strength to resin composite with fluoride application and to detect the fluorine in human dentin around resin composite after fluoride application by $$mu$$-PIGE/PIXE system at TIARA. This study showed that fluorine was detected on dentin/resin composite interface, which indicated high bond strength, by PIXE/PIGE system. The relationship between fluorine and dentin bonding became clear. This method might give information about fluoride effect on dentin bonding systems.

Fabrication of three-dimensional pillar arrays by PBW for improved trapping performance of dielectrophoretic devices

Proton beam writing (PBW) is a direct writing technique using MeV focused proton beams. A dielectric pillar array for a dielectrophoresis (DEP) trapping site of food poisoning microbes is fabricated as an application of PBW. The high-aspect-ratio pillar arrays with the height of several tens of micrometers have, so far, been fabricated by PBW to increase the effective density and volume of the DEP trapping sites, whose effectiveness was demonstrated by the trapping experiments of Escherichia coli (E. coli) of the microbes. In this study, dielectric pillar arrays with the multi-level 3D structures of SU-8 were fabricated to further improve their trapping efficiency. In this fabrication, the combination technique of PBW and the hydrogen ion beam writing (HBW) which was a PBW technique using 1.0 MeV H$$_2^+$$ beam was used to irradiate SU-8 in a short time by switching from the proton beam to hydrogen ion beams with the same energies but different penetration depths. The irradiation of PBW and HBW was preformed by the dedicated PB writer at Shibaura Institute of Technology. The fabrication of the dielectric pillar arrays with the multi-level 3D structures was successfully done using the combination technique. The results of the fabrication and their performance tests will be shown in the presentation in detail.

Improvement of spatial resolution of PIXE-CT in TIARA

To achieve higher spatial resolution of PIXE-CT, ML-EM iterative algorithm was applied to the reconstruction process. We modified the algorithm to be suited for PIXE-CT in consideration of the energy attenuation of projectiles, and measured the 3D distributions of phosphorous and lead (Pb) in a pre-fixed protest cell introduced to metal solutions containing Pb. Before micro-PIXE analysis, STIM-CT was performed, and the energy of projectiles in the sample was calculated using the Bethe-Bloch formula. After that, we obtained twenty projections of micro-PIXE, and reconstructed the 3D distributions using ten times of the iterative calculation. As a result, the 3D distributions of phosphorus and Pb in the cell were successfully obtained. Though phosphorus was entirely distributed in the cell, Pb was absorbed only on the surface. The spatial resolution estimated from the profile of Pb was less than 5 $$mu$$m. That is the best performance of PIXE-CT in our laboratory at this time.

Incident energy dependence of nuclear reaction imaging of boron doped in iron

The measurement of incident energy dependence of nuclear reaction imaging of trace amount of boron in iron has been carried out using 2$$sim$$3 $$mu$$m$$phi$$ proton microbeam from 3 MV single ended electrostatic accelerator of TIARA facility, JAEA Takasaki. Steel specimens containing 100 ppm boron have been bombarded by 1.5 - 2.5 MeV proton beam. The maps of boron distribution have been taken by detecting $$gamma$$ ray (428 keV) emitted from $$^{10}$$B(p, $$alpha$$'$$gamma$$)$$^7$$Be nuclear reaction. As a result of mapping dependent on incident energy, aggregation of boron of several microns in depth can be clearly seen.
