The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has started new severe accident research programs focusing the issues where large uncertainties remain including the phenomena specific to Fukushima-Daiichi NPP accident: the influence of the injection of sea water into core, the failure behavior of fuel bundles and RPV in BWR, and the source term. JAEA has started acquiring basic data, performing analyses, developing models and preparing test apparatus on the sea water effects, the behavior of BC, the characteristics of corium debris and the fission product release behavior from fuel for the evaluation of accident progression with increased accuracies.
