Effects of beam divergence on pseudo-strains observed in time-of-flight (TOF) neutron diffraction, that overlapped with the neutron attenuation effect and the surface-effect were investigated. The through-surface strain scanning on an annealed steel plate was performed in different instrument resolutions by controlling the incident beam divergence. Typical pseudo-strain distributions were observed, but they showed different trend according to the beam divergence. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the pseudo-strains induced in the strain scanning of coarse grain materials can be suppressed by controlling the incident beam divergence. Therefore, the incident beam divergence must be carefully considered to reduce pseudo-strains in time-of-flight neutron diffractometry.

In order to clarify an anneal effect of internal strain in dissimilar materials by laser welding, internal strain measurements using high energy synchrotron white X-rays were carried out at BL14B1 in SPring-8. The specimens were dissimilar materials made by laser welding between ferritic/martensitic steel (PNC-FMS) and SUS316 austenitic stainless steel. In this study, we measured the internal strain distribution of three kinds of specimens which changed a laser irradiation condition and it was found that the tensile strain in ferritic/martensitic steel occurred in all specimens before annealing but the residual strain in austenitic stainless steel was not so remarkable. It is thought that these reasons are related to the mechanical characteristic of both the materials. On the other hand, in all specimens after annealing, it was found that the residual strain in both the materials did not almost exist.

Thermal relaxation behavior of residual stress in peened dissimilar weld joints investigated by neutron diffraction

no journal, ,

The materials used for the dissimilar weld joint were a SUS316L stainless steel and a NCF600 nickel alloy for the base plates, and an Alloy82 nickel alloy for the weld metal. The ultrasonic shot peening (USP) was applied to the sample surface after welding. The residual stress mappings of the as-peened and heat treated (593 K, 2 h) samples were measured at room temperature using KOWARI in ANSTO. In the results, the reduction of the tensile residual stress was observed near the interface of the weld metal and the nickel base plate. To clarify the relaxation process, the in-situ stress measurements during thermal cycles from RT to 593 K were conducted using TAKUMI in J-PARC. The effects of the difference in thermal expansion coefficient of the materials and the temperature dependence of the yield strength on the residual stress relaxation were disscussed based on the experimental results.

${it In situ}$ observation of recrystallization process for aluminum single crystals using synchrotron radiation

no journal, ,

The changes in the microstructures associated with plastic deformation and recrystallization were measured using hard synchrotron radiation for aluminum single crystals tensile-deformed along the $$<$$111$$>$$ direction. In this study, we evaluated the crystallographic orientation and internal stress/strain distribution using the strain scanning method. It was found that the distribution of internal stress/strain was uniform and very small. We also carried out an in-situ observation for the annealing process of the deformed sample using a specially designed in-line annealing apparatus and a 2-dimensional detector. The ${it in situ}$ observation clearly showed an abrupt change in the crystallographic orientation associated with recrystallization. It was also found that the crystal quality of the recrystallized grain improved with the annealing time.
