In $$d$$-wave unconventional superconductors, superconducting Cooper pairs are believed to be formed via magnetic fluctuations. In fact, superconducting transition temperature $$T$$$$_{rm c}$$ roughly correlates with antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation energy in $$d$$-wave unconventional superconductors including high $$T$$$$_{rm c}$$ cuprates. In addition to this correlation, the superconducting pairing symmetry and the magnetic anisotropy of the normal state are found empirically to be strongly correlated in $$f$$-electron unconventional superconductors having crystallographic symmetry lower than cubic. In antiferromagnetic systems, unconventional superconductivity appears with singlet ($$d$$-wave) pairing for cases of XY anisotropy. In contrast, in ferromagnetic systems, unconventional superconductivity with triplet (e.g. $$p$$-wave) pairing appears for cases of Ising anisotropy. In this report, the origin of XY anisotropy is discussed in terms of the angler momentum character $$jz$$ for each Fermi surfaces.

Besides the importance of AnO$$_2$$ series (An; U, Np, Pu, Am) as a nuclear fuel, the magnetic properties of these compounds at low temperatures are particularly interesting. Their surprisingly varied physical properties continue to be of interest for both theory and experiment. In this study, we have performed NMR studies for the series of actinide dioxides. On the basis of $$^{17}$$O-NMR studies, exotic magnetic orderings associated with multipole degrees of freedom on 5$$f$$ electrons have been identified in UO$$_2$$ (dipolar + quadrupolar ordering) and NpO$$_2$$ (octupolar + quadrupolar ordering), in contrast with the non-magnetic ground state of PuO$$_2$$. In AmO$$_2$$, our $$^{17}$$O-NMR data provide the first microscopic evidence for a phase transition as a bulk property in this system.

Advancing coated particle fuel technology

More stringent conditions of higher burnups and higher fuel temperatures of VHTR have prompted R&D of two types of fuel concepts: (1) conventional but more robust Triso design, and (2) ZrC-Triso. As for the conventional Triso, modeling efforts are focused on the palladium attack of SiC and the $$^{110}$$Ag diffusion through SiC. Concerning the fast migration of $$^{110m}$$Ag through CVD-SiC, a self-mediated percolation diffusion model has been developed. There, attention is given to peculiarities of the CVD SiC grain boundaries. The ZrC-coated particle fuel has shown promising results particularly for its durability at temperatures beyond the 1600$$^{circ}$$C criteria of the conventional Triso particles. The positron annihilation spectroscopy is applied to better define the quality of ZrC coating. One drawback of ZrC coating is rather large diffusion coefficient of ruthenium, possible mechanism of which is briefly discussed also.
