Asbestos discrimination based on spectral analysis of laser-induced fluorescence

Feasibility study on the discrimination of asbestos particles using laser-induced fluorescence has been conducted. Laser-induced fluorescence spectra with a broad band width from 350 to 700 nm were observed from five types of asbestos minerals and six types of building materials under ultraviolet laser excitations. The fluorescence spectra were examined for the numerical discrimination of asbestos from the other materials. Significant differences in the fluorescence characteristics between asbestos and the building materials were confirmed. Several microscopic methods to discriminate asbestos using the differences in accumulated fluorescence intensities from 350 to 750, decay ratio of the fluorescence intensity, and relative ratio of the intensity between two different wavelength regions, are presented.

Selective detection of aerosol particles using remote particle counter

A method for the selective detection of aerosol particles consisting of a specified substance has been demonstrated by using laser-induced fluorescence. A remote particle counter developed for the remote monitoring of aerosol particles was applied to visualize laser-induced fluorescence emitted from a specific aerosol particles. It is made of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, a CCD camera equipped with a fast gate shutter, and a personal computer. An optical low-pass filter equipped with the camera can transmit the laser-induced fluorescence and eliminate the backscattered laser light from particles. The method was applied to detect alcohol mist aerosol in which a laser dye is dissolved and asbestos particles suspended in air. This method is expected to be useful for measuring selectively the number of a specific aerosol.

Remote particle counter for clean rooms

In recent years, particle counting devices capable of monitoring particles suspended in air on real-time basis are of considerable practical concern in the fields of semiconductor and large display panel industries. A remote particle counter, which had been developed for monitoring aerosols released in air from nuclear facilities, has been applied to a measurement system for clean rooms used in the fields. It can visualize the particles in narrow space at a distance of 6m and derive the number and size distribution of particles with diameter of above 0.5 microns. By improving the laser energy, sensitivity of the image intensifier camera, and magnification of the zoom lens used in the system, it is possible to detect the particles with diameters of below 0.5 microns. The method and the current performance of the measurement system are described.
