Comprehensive estimation of nuclide production cross sections using a phenomenological approach

Nuclide production cross sections are crucial in nuclear research, development, space exploration, and astrophysical investigations. Despite their importance, limited experimental data availability restricts the practicality of phenomenological approaches to comprehensive cross-section estimation. To address this, we propose a Gaussian process-based machine learning (ML) model capable of transferring knowledge from elements with abundant data to those with limited or no experimental data. Our ML model not only enables comprehensive cross-section estimations for various elements but also demonstrates predictive capabilities akin to physics models, even in regions with scarce training data.

Secular variations of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) are inseparably associated with the galactic activities and should reflect the environments of the local galactic magnetic field, interstellar clouds, and nearby supernova remnants. The high-energy muons produced in the atmosphere by high-energy GCRs can penetrate deep underground and generate radioisotopes in the rock. As long lived radionuclides such as $$^{10}$$Be and $$^{26}$$Al have been accumulating in these rocks, concentrations of $$^{10}$$Be and $$^{26}$$Al can be used to estimate the long-term variations in high-energy muon yields, corresponding to those in the high-energy GCRs over a few million years. This study measured the production cross sections for muon induced $$^{10}$$Be and $$^{26}$$Al by irradiating positive muons with the momentum of 160 GeV/c on the synthetic silica plates and the granite core at the COMPASS experiment line in CERN SPS. In addition, it the contributions of the direct muon spallation reaction and the nuclear reactions by muon-induced particles on the production of long lived radionuclides in the rocks were clarified.

Inelastic neutron scattering spectra of hydrogen in palladium were calculated considering nuclear quantum effects at finite temperatures. A computational method combining semiclassical molecular dynamics based on path integrals and machine learning potentials was used. The calculated spectra agree well with the experimental spectra with respect to the positions and intensities of the peaks corresponding to the fundamental and first harmonic of the vibrational excitation of hydrogen atoms. Comparison with classical molecular dynamics shows that nuclear quantum effects play an essential role in the inelastic neutron scattering spectra.

When computing the space charge tune shift for a relativistic bunched beam within a cylindrical chamber, mirror currents for a coasting beam, initially introduced to replace the chamber wall, are employed. Subsequently, the obtained result is extended to encompass the bunched beam, taking into account the bunching factor which quantifies the distribution of bunches around the accelerator ring. In the process of derivation, the terms that characterize the bunch length are intuitively integrated into the formula. As a result, the validity of this approach has never been established. This study provides the derivation of the space charge tune shift formula for both relativistic and non-relativistic bunched beams right from the outset, employing the Green function formalism. Subsequently, it is compared with the earlier formula derived using mirror currents.

Dirac Kondo effect under magnetic catalysis

We develop a mean-field theory of a novel Kondo effect emerging in systems without a Fermi surface, which instead emerges under strong magnetic fields. We determine the magnitude of the Kondo condensate, which is a particle pairing composed of conducting Dirac fermions and localized impurities. We focus on the competition between the Kondo effect and the energy gap formation that stems from the pairing among the Dirac fermions leading to the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. We find that this competition induces a quantum critical point. We also investigate finite-temperature effects. This system at vanishing fermion density can be studied with Monte Carlo lattice simulations, which do not suffer from the sign problem.
