The evolution of the field of an FEL oscillator at zero detuning length of an optical cavity (dL = 0) is studied analytically. The field on the leading edge at the first round trip is the same as that of a self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) FEL characterized by an FEL parameter. The field evolves with round trips by interaction with electrons. The field in the early stage of the evolution is found to scale with the FEL parameter and the round-trip number, and is similar to that of SASE with high electron beam density.

We propose a novel approach to the analysis of the coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) effect on beam dynamics in energy-recovery linacs (ERL). Since an ERL return-arc consists of a large number of dipole and quadrupole magnets, it is not a practical way to search an optimum design by time-consuming particle simulations. We show that a first-order transfer matrix can be applied to calculate the emittance growth due to the CSR in the linear regime, weak CSR limit. The optimum design of ERL arcs such as triple-bend achromat lattice is easily obtained by matrix calculation. As an example, optimization of a 3GeV ERL arc is presented.

An energy-recovery linac (ERL) for a high-power free-electron laser (FEL) is under development in JAERI. We completed the construction of the ERL, and demonstrated the first energy-recover operation and FEL lasing in 2002. For realizing FEL lasing in 5-10kW average power, further upgrade of the ERL is carrying on, which includes reinforcement of the injector, replacement of the RF control system and so on. As future plans, we present possible quantum control of chemical reaction dynamics through a self-chirped FEL pulse, application of ERL technologies to high-flux photon sources in a wide range of photon energy from THz radiation to -ray.

Three charge-exchange foils are used in J-PARC 3GeV Synchrotron(RCS). One is used for changing H to H
by stripping electrons, and the others are used for changing H
and H
to H
which are failed to strip at the first foil. In this paper, we will describe the temperature distribution at the charge-exchange foils calculated by a simulation code 'ANSYS' where the particle distribution is based on a particle tracking code 'ACCSIM'.

The first J-PARC ACS cavity is under fabrication. Aluminum and OFC test cells were fabricated and tested for RF properties. This paper discusses the RF measurement setup, comparing the measurements and analyses, and the outlook for the next step.

A 400m-long superconducting RF linac cryostat is conceptually designed and discussed to optimize the advanced low-temperature cryostat for an ERL light source. A low temperature cryostat for superconducting RF linacs and other superconducting devices should be designed and made to minimize its heat invasion through the heat bridges between the room and low temperature parts. The cryostat also should be designed and made to minimize total number of the heat cycles for the rest of its life after the initial test. We can expect that the total number of the heat bridges is roughly proportional to the number of the cryostat, and a life interval between two contiguous cryostat malfunctions inversely proportional to the number of the heat cycles. Therefore, if we can design and make a single and long cryostat to realize the operation less than a half cycle for the rest of its life, we can run our cryostat for a very longer interval than tens of years and with minimum electricity.
