Accumulation possibility of tritium released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in marine organisms

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings began the oceanic release of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) in August 2023, in which radioactive materials were effectively removed using the Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS). The environmental behavior of tritium, accounting for almost all radioactivity in ALPS-treated water, is of critical scientific and social concern. The accumulation possibility of tritium in marine organisms under the release conditions of ALPS-treated water was reviewed to ensure the safety of fishery products collected off the Fukushima coast and prevent unfounded reputation damages to the products. First, previous findings from actual measurements and numerical model estimations of the distribution of tritium derived from ALPS-treated water in seawater off the Fukushima coast are summarized to discuss the impact of oceanic release on tritium levels in seawater. As a result, the impact is suggested to be highly limited, which is indistinguishable from a natural level except for within 200 km from FDNPS. Second, the accumulation possibility of organically bound tritium (OBT) in marine organisms, such as phytoplankton, seaweed, and fish, was assessed using previous findings obtained from experimental and numerical studies, resulting in far smaller OBT accumulations in those organisms compared to the food-chain guideline proposed by FAO/WHO. Finally, the risks of internal exposure through the ingestion of fishery products collected off the Fukushima coast are discussed and quantitatively explained to be minimal especially in comparison with the food-chain guideline. However, continuous environmental monitoring of the oceanic release of ALPS-treated water is considered essential.

Dynamics of plastic debris and its density change between river compartments in the Tuul River system, Mongolia

Plastic pollution in river environments has become an emerging concern in recent decades, and river plastic studies have received worldwide attention. However, most plastics research has focused on the dynamics of microsized plastics in surface water and sediments, whereas less research has been conducted on the gradual degradation and size reduction of plastics in the environment. Additionally, the migration of plastic debris between river compartments and changes in its properties are less understood despite their impact on its fate. In this study, we investigated changes in plastic debris distribution in terms of abundance, size, shape, polymer types, and photodegradation stages in the floodplain, surface water, and sediment compartments of the Tuul River system in Mongolia. The plastic abundance was 5.46$$pm$$3.53 items/m$$^{2}$$ in the floodplain, 155$$pm$$100.7 items/m$$^{3}$$ in the surface water, and 128.4$$pm$$76.3 items/kg in the sediment.

Biofilm-mediated interactions between plastics and radiocesium in coastal environments

A ubiquitous distribution of plastic debris has been reported in aquatic and terrestrial environments; however, the interactions between plastics and radionuclides and the radioactivity of environmental plastics remain largely unknown. Here, we characterize biofilms developing on the surface of plastic debris to explore the role of plastic-associated biofilms as an interaction medium between plastics and radiocesium ($$^{137}$$Cs) in the environment. Biofilm samples were extracted from plastics (1-50 mm in size) collected from two contrasting coastal areas in Japan. The radioactivity of plastics was estimated based on the $$^{137}$$Cs activity concentration of the biofilms and compared seasonally with surrounding environmental samples (i.e., sediment and sand). $$^{137}$$Cs traces were detected in biofilms with activity concentrations of 21-1300 Bq kg$$^{-1}$$ biofilm (dry weight), corresponding to 0.04-4.5 Bq kg$$^{-1}$$ plastic (dry weight). Our results reveal the interaction between $$^{137}$$Cs and plastics and provide evidence that organic and mineral components in biofilms are essential in $$^{137}$$Cs retention in environmental plastics.

The stability of soil organic matter (SOM) is important for improving our understanding of the global carbon cycle and ongoing climate change. This study examined the applicability of loss-on-ignition of soil with a stepwise increase in temperature (SIT-LOI) to evaluate the stability of the SOM using soil samples from Japan having different organic matter (OM) and mineral contents and different mean residence times (MRTs), estimated from radiocarbon analysis, for SOM. As the result of this examination, SIT-LOI data was strongly correlated with MRTs. This clearly suggests that SIT-LOI can be an indicator evaluating the stability of SOM in actual environments.

The global survey for the presence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments has attracted widespread scientific attention over the past decade. This study demonstrates a multidimensional analytical approach, including isotopic and thermogravimetric analyses to evaluate characteristics and behavior of MPs in the environment. The MP samples were collected in two contrasting coastal areas of Japan. The $$delta$$$$^{13}$$C values of field-collected polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) MPs were ranged from -25.6 to -31.4, -23.4 to -30.9, and -27.3 to -28.6 per mil, respectively. The differences in $$delta$$$$^{13}$$C signature between MPs with the same polymer types (i.e., PE and PP) but different colors. Through thermal analysis, the single-step endothermic process was observed for environmental PE and PS-MPs. The results reveal that degradation may play a significant role in the behavior and characteristics of MP debris in the aquatic environment.

Reactive sulfur species (RSS) involve oxidative stress deeply and contribute anti-inflammatory effect, but no studied have focused on RSS changes after irradiation. In this study, we comprehensively analyzed the metabolites, focusing on RSS in mouse brain following radon inhalation. The ratio of oxidized glutathione to reduced glutathione and proportion of RSS in GSH or cysteine increased by radon inhalation. The sulfur ion might bind to GSH or cysteine chemically under conditions of oxidative stress, even at very low-dose exposure. We performed the overall assessment of high-dimensional data by applying machine learning and showed the specific characteristics of the effects by the exposure conditions. Our results suggested that RSS could produce a biological defense against oxidative stress following radon inhalation.

Analysis of factors contributing to the increase in $$^{7}$$Be activity concentrations in the atmosphere

In March 2013, increased $$^{7}$$Be activity concentrations in the atmosphere were observed for successive days in Dazaifu, western Japan. The daily $$^{7}$$Be activity concentration averages ranged from 0.93 to 14 mBq/m$$^{3}$$, with a monthly average of 8.3 mBq/m$$^{3}$$. This average was the highest among the monthly averages observed between 1999 and 2015 and higher than the monthly average over this period (4.7 mBq/m$$^{3}$$) plus twice the standard deviation (1.7 $$times$$ 2 mBq/m$$^{3}$$ = 8.1 mBq/m$$^{3}$$). Also, this exceeded the monthly average (6.0 mBq/m$$^{3}$$) only for March 1999-2015, excluding 2013, where the cosmic-ray intensity, a component producing $$^{7}$$Be, decreased. Based on the backward trajectory analysis results, the inflow of air from the stratosphere and upper troposphere at high latitudes that frequently occurred in March 2013 was considered the reason for the $$^{7}$$Be activity concentration increase.

Radon solubility and diffusion in the skin surface layer

In specific situations such as bathing in a radon spa, where the radon activity concentration in thermal water is far higher than that in air, it has been revealed that radon uptake via skin can occur and should be considered for more precise dose evaluation. The primary aim of the present study was to numerically demonstrate the distribution as well as the degree of diffusion of radon in the skin, with a focus on its surface layers (i.e., stratum corneum). We made a biokinetic model that included diffusion theory at the stratum corneum, and measured radon solubility in the stratum corneum to get a crucial parameter. The implementation of the model suggested that the diffusion coefficient in the stratum corneum was as low as general radon-proof sheets. The depth profile of radon in the skin was found to be that after a 20-minute immersion in water, the radon activity concentration at the top surface skin layer was approximately 1000 times higher than that at the viable skin layer. The information on the position of radon as a radiation source would contribute to special dose evaluation where specific target cell layers are assumed for the skin.

Additive-free hydrothermal leaching method with low environmental burden for screening of strontium in soil

In this work, hydrothermal leaching was applied to simulated soils (clay minerals vermiculite, montmorillonite, kaolinite) and actual soils (Terunuma, Japan) to generate organic acids with the objective to develop an additive-free screening method for determination of Sr in soil. Stable strontium (SrCl$$_{2}$$) was adsorbed onto soils for study and ten organic acids were evaluated for leaching Sr from simulated soils under hydrothermal conditions (120 to 200$$^{circ}$$C) at concentrations up to 0.3 M. For strontium-adsorbed vermiculite (Sr-V), 0.1 M citric acid was found to be effective for leaching Sr at 150$$^{circ}$$C and 1 h treatment time. Based on these results, the formation of organic acids from organic matter in Terunuma soil was studied. Hydrothermal treatment of Terunuma soil produced a maximum amount of organic acids at 200$$^{circ}$$C and 0.5 h reaction time. To confirm the possibility for leaching of Sr from Terunuma soil, strontium-adsorbed Terunuma soil (Sr-S) was studied. For Sr-S, hydrothermal treatment at 200$$^{circ}$$C for 0.5 h reaction time allowed 40% of the Sr to be leached at room temperature, thus demonstrating an additive-free method for screening of Sr in soil. The additive-free hydrothermal leaching method avoids calcination of solids in the first step of chemical analysis and has application to both routine monitoring of metals in soils and to emergency situations.

Overview of environmental impact assessment studies on radioactive contamination after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

Environmental radioactive contamination by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident has clearly been declining during the passage of almost 10 years from the accident. However, the prolongation of radioactive contamination in natural ecosystems probably derived from forested area without decontamination is pointed out by many studies, so more detailed examination will be needed for environmental dynamics of bioavailable radiocesium and its transfer to ecosystems. Also for influence of radiation to organisms, effects of evacuation on wild organisms are more pronounced than direct effect from radiation, especially in Fukushima evacuation area.

Summary of radioactive Cs dynamics studies in coastal areas and assessment of river impacts

A large amount of radioactive material was released into the environment following the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake. Nine years have passed since this accident, and the radioactive concentration in the seabed sediments has decreased. However, the influence of rivers causes coastal areas to be dynamic. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has conducted studies at the mouth of the Ukedo River. Here, we review previous studies and evaluate the radioactive Cs supplied by rivers using a sediment trap. In this study, a mooring system consisting of a sediment trap was installed in the Ukedo River estuary near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant from February 2017 to November 2017. A calculation of the annual $$^{137}$$Cs flux estimated from the obtained contribution rates indicates that the contribution of resuspension to the flux was over 60% during this period. Therefore, this study shows that the mobilization of radioactive Cs in the coastal area is primarily due to resuspension.

$$^{137}$$Cs outflow from forest floor adjacent to a residential area; Comparison of decontaminated and non-decontaminated forest floor

The 3-years monitoring of $$^{137}$$Cs outflow associated with soil erosion in the decontaminated and no decontaminated sites using experimental plot was conducted in the forest of Fukushima during the rainy season. The $$^{137}$$Cs outflow in the decontaminated site was 10 to 14 times larger than that of no decontaminated site. However, the outflow in the decontaminated site decreased from 3.24% to 0.61% in corresponding with the recovery of the forest floor cover. When reaching of the forest floor cover to 60% and over, the $$^{137}$$Cs outflow in the decontaminated site turned into relatively minor fluctuations and similar level to the no decontaminated site. The decrease in the $$^{137}$$Cs outflow corresponding to the restoration of the forest floor cover was owing to the recovering of the protective effect of forest floor against the raindrop splash and decrease in ratio of the soil component with relatively high $$^{137}$$Cs activity in the particulate matter.

Dynamics of $$^{137}$$Cs in water and phyto- and zooplankton in a reservoir affected by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident

Lake water, phytoplankton and zooplankton were sampled by a total of 12 quarterly surveys from August 2014 to May 2017 at a dam lake in the Fukushima nuclear disaster area, and variations of dissolved form of $$^{137}$$Cs and planktonic $$^{137}$$Cs were observed. Seasonal variations in dissolved $$^{137}$$Cs concentration with high in summer and low in winter were observed in the upstream, midstream and downstream areas of the lake, but no seasonal or site specific differences in planktonic $$^{137}$$Cs concentrations and dominant species were found. The amount of planktonic form of $$^{137}$$Cs in the water was less than 1.4% of the total $$^{137}$$Cs in the lake water, therefore the effect of plankton on the dynamics of $$^{137}$$Cs in the lake was minimal.

In this study, the distributions of iron and phosphorus species in a 1.25 m$$^{3}$$ pilot scale submerged membrane bioreactor dosed with Fe(II) salts to either the membrane chamber or the 1st anoxic chamber were determined using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the iron and phosphorus K-edges. Significant differences in the distribution of Fe species were evident at the commencement of dosing depending on the chamber to which Fe(II) was dosed though these differences were much less distinct by the time steady state conditions were achieved. Both the co-precipitation of P with Fe and adsorption of phosphorus to iron oxides play important roles with regard to the removal of phosphorus from the MBR supernatant with the results of this work suggesting that P removal via formation of Fe(III)-phosphate mineral species is preferred if Fe(II) is dosed to the membrane chamber rather than the 1st anoxic chamber.

After the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, the vertical distribution of radiocesium in soil has been investigated to better understand the behavior of radiocesium in the environment. The typical method used for measuring the vertical distribution of radiocesium is troublesome because it requires collection and measurement of the activity of soil samples. In this study, we established a method of estimating the vertical distribution of radiocesium by focusing on the characteristics of $$gamma$$-ray spectra obtained via aerial radiation monitoring using an unmanned helicopter. In this method, the change in the ratio of direct $$gamma$$ rays to scattered $$gamma$$ rays at various depths in the soil was utilized to quantify the vertical distribution of radiocesium. The results show a positive correlation between the abovementioned and the actual vertical distributions of radiocesium measured in the soil samples.

Implementation of decontamination technologies appropriate to Japanese boundary conditions

Major challenges to implementing full-scale environmental decontamination were the absence of real-world examples and also lack of experience in planning and implementing decontamination technology appropriate to the physical and social boundary conditions in both Japan and Fukushima. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency was thus charged with conducting a range of Decontamination Pilot Project to examine the applicability of decontamination technologies, with a special focus on reducing dose rates and thus allowing evacuees to return to re-establish their normal lifestyles as quickly as possible, whilst simultaneously maintaining worker safety. In this report, re-edit the report of the Decontamination Pilot Project (Nakayama et al.,2014), do the commentary for the decontamination technology.

An Overview of progress in environmental research on radioactive materials derived from the Fukushima Nuclear accident
