Effort for the international research reactor center and birth of the nuclear techno-park with the JMTR

In June of this year, Japanese Government announced 14 specialized projects of advanced research infrastructure in order to promote basic as well as applied researches. In the program, development of user-friendly environment especially for young and female researchers is highlighted. One of these 14 projects, birth of the nuclear techno-park with the JMTR is selected, then new irradiation facilities and PIE equipments will be installed up to FY 2013 at least.

Generation mechanism of high energy radiation observed during thunderstorm activity

In recent years, increases of $$gamma$$-rays seemed to be caused by thunderstorm activities have been observed during winter thunderstorms in Japan. Intense radiation during thunderstorms observed so far can be classified into two types. One is an instantaneous radiation burst lasts for no more than a few milliseconds, it is seemed that the bursts are produced in the process of lightning discharge. The other is the gradual fluctuations, last for a few to several tens of seconds, which are considered to be caused in a region of intense electric field within the thundercloud. In addition to the observed results during winter thunderstorms, the runaway breakdown thought to be triggering by the high energy radiation is outlined.

Radiation application to our lives; Ion-beam application to life science and agriculture

In the field of biotechnology and medical application, functional analysis of proteins involved in DNA repair and replication has been progressed. The ion beam breeding technique, which was developed in JAEA for the first time in the world as a new mutation induction technology, has been applied for many varieties of plants and microorganisms such as flower, crop, vegetable, yeast, alga and fungus. The collimating heavy-ion microbeam system at JAEA-Takasaki has provided target irradiation of heavy charged particles to biological material at atmospheric pressure using a minimum beam size 5 mm in diameter. No-invasive imaging methods are powerful tools for biology and medical diagnosis. The Positron Emitting Tracer Imaging System (PETIS) is one of such methods and it visualizes the distribution of positron-emitting radioisotope in intact plants like a video camera in order to understand plant nutrition. The in-air micro-PIXE system has also been used for investigation of elemental analysis in a cell for medical diagnosis such as Asbestos. A new radionuclide for medicine such as Cu-64 and Br-76, was produced by using AVF cyclotron and studied for the diagnosis of cancer by positron emission tomography, PET.

This review explains the origin of the radiation from viewpoints of a science history, a natural science, the source of surroundings and laws for the beginner on the work of radiation protection in the future. In a historical viewpoint, it explains the history of the radiation and the radioactivity discovery and the knowledge of the radiation and radioactivity at the present age. And it explains a scientific definition and the kind of the radiation and the radioactivity in radiation protection in the viewpoint in a natural science. Moreover, it goes back the history of space and the earth on the source of the natural radiation, and the kinds and their use on an artificial radiation source are both described. Furthermore, it explains the definition and its problem of the radiation on radiation protection in the law. Finally, the interpretation of the radiation and the radioactivity is easily indicated as a worker on radiation protection.
