Measurement of the first ionization potential of lawrencium by surface ionization method

Sato, Tetsuya

Genshikaku Kenkyu, 61(1), p.96 - 106, 2016/09

We successfully determined the first ionization potential of lawrencium (Lr, Z=103). The result experimentally substantiated for the first time that Lr is the last member of the actinide series. Measured ionization potential suggested that Lr atom would have the electronic configuration which is different from the configuration expected based on the Periodic table. For the measurement, we have developed a novel method applied the surface ionization process. Public responses after the publication are also introduced.

Possible physics program with a large acceptance hyperon spectrometer at J-PARC

Imai, Kenichi

Genshikaku Kenkyu, 57(Suppl.3), p.31 - 35, 2013/03

A large acceptance hyperon spectrometer (HypTPC) is going to be constructed for hadron physics at K1.8 beamline at J-PARC. It has TPC which can be used under high beam intensity. The major purpose of this spectrometer is the H-dibaryon search which recently has become a hot topics again. Because of its specific feature such as large acceptance and internal target structure, it is expected to be quite powerful for other experiments such as baryon spectroscopy and $$Lambda$$(1405). We will discuss such possible programs with HypTPC at J-PARC.

Research items at ADS target test facility

Kikuchi, Kenji

Genshikaku Kenkyu, 50(4), p.131 - 149, 2006/03

Development on lead bismuth spallation target techniques is planned at the ADS target test facility in the J-PARC, Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. It aims at realizing an accelerator driven transmutation system to reduce the negative effect of waste disposals. Achievements of lead bismuth target technology are described from research and development activities of high-energy proton beam irradiation and lead bismuth corrosion-erosion tests with referring the 800MW ADS plant model. Experimental items in J-PARC test facilities is mentioned.

Transmutation experimental facility

Oigawa, Hiroyuki

Genshikaku Kenkyu, 50(4), p.113 - 121, 2006/03

The Partitioning and Transmutation technology for long-lived nuclear wastes is important to utilize the nuclear energy in sustainable manner. In the J-PARC project, the "Transmutation Experimental Facility (TEF)" is planned to be constructed aiming at the experimental study on the accelerator-driven transmutation system (ADS) for effective transmutation of minor actinides and other transmutation systems including fast reactors. TEF consists of two buildings: the Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility where the reactor physics and the controllability of ADS are to be studied using MA-bearing fuel and a low-power proton beam, and the ADS Target Test Facility where the technological development of a spallation target and related materials for ADS is to conducted using a 200kW proton beam.

Decomposition of dioxins in waste incineration flue gas using electron beams

Kojima, Takuji

Genshikaku Kenkyu, 48(5), p.53 - 61, 2003/12

Technology for Decomposition/detoxification of dioxins in waste incineration flue gas of 200$$^{circ}$$C was developed using a samll self-shielded electron accelerator(300keV, size: 3 $$times$$ 3 $$times$$ 3 m$$^{3}$$ including shirlding materials), which is not reqired to have legal the approval of the installation for ionizing irradiation gererator. Dioxin decomposition ratio, the dioxin concentration values before and after electron beam irradiation, is higher than 90%, one order lower than initial value, at absorbed doses higher than 15kGy. The result shows decomposition mechanism for dioxins and demonstrates that endocrine disrupter activity of the flue gas also decrease by irradiation. The contents of paper was the same as one presented in the 2nd meeting on small accelerators, entitled "Promotion of use of small accelerators---".

R&D on nuclear transmutation, A; Partitioning of high-level radioactive waste

Morita, Yasuji

Genshikaku Kenkyu, 47(6), p.21 - 30, 2003/06

This paper describes the present state and future prospect of research and development on the separation of long-lived radionuclides from high-level waste (partitioning), which is indispensable for the transmutation of those nuclides. The main items described are composition of high-level waste, selection of elements to be separated, the purpose of partitioining, and development of partitioning process in JAERI.

Present status and perspective on nuclear transmutation, C; Accelerator driven transmutation system

Oigawa, Hiroyuki

Genshikaku Kenkyu, 47(6), p.39 - 52, 2003/03

Minor actinide (MA) and long-lived fission product (LLFP) keep their radiological toxicity in high level waste of nuclear fuel cycle for long period. In order to transmute such nuclides to short-lived or stable ones, the Accelerator-Driven Transmutation System (ADS) is proposed and developed. This article presents the current status of the research and development on ADS, technical issues to be solved, the experimental program under the framework of the High-Intensity Proton Accelerator Project (J-PARC), and worldwide activities.
