Etching behavior of high purity aluminum irradiated with Cu ion beam

Osawa, Nobuo*; Hibino, Atsushi*; Yamamoto, Shunya; Sato, Takahiro

Hyomen Gijutsu, 61(7), p.508 - 515, 2010/07

This paper, which clarifies effects of Cu ion beam irradiation with a tandem accelerator and an ion implanter on the morphologies of initial pits and on pit growth in high-purity aluminum, describes investigations of direct current (DC) etching and rectangular alternating current (AC) etching in hydrochloric acid solutions. Results of SIMS analysis confirmed that the Cu ion depths in specimens irradiated with the tandem accelerator and the ion implanter were approximately 1 $$mu$$m at 1.5 MeV, 3 $$mu$$m at 6 MeV (tandem accelerator), and 0.2 $$mu$$m at 300 keV (ion implanter), respectively. These depths almost agreed with theoretical values. During DC etching, many facets were produced on the tips of tunnel pits through the zone of Cu ion concentration. The Cu ions in aluminum foils irradiated with the tandem accelerator cause excessive facet dissolution during tunnel pit growth. Plural facets on the cubic pits' side walls were observed in Cu ion irradiated specimens after AC etching. Results suggest that Cu ion irradiation of high-purity aluminum accelerated facet dissolution during the anodic half cycle of AC etching. Consequently, the excessive facet dissolution caused by Cu ions irradiated in aluminum is inferred to prevent pit propagation and extension of horizontal pit growth.

Reliability of plant materials for nuclear fuel reprocessing process

Yamamoto, Masahiro

Hyomen Gijutsu, 58(9), p.500 - 505, 2007/09

The generation of mass-production and consumption had been ended and the generation of declining birth rate and aged society has been coming rapidly in Japan. The infrastructures which defend our security and safe have to keep these functions by maintenances. According to the research for cost of corrosion in Japan using economical data in 1997, the ratio of maintenance costs in total budget of electric power supply services has been reported to 10 times larger than that of 25 years before. In this report, the procedures to ensure the reliabilities of materials used in severe corrosive environment, nuclear reprocessing plant, has been shown and the future subjects are explained.

Excitation effect of low energy electrons on high temperature oxidation of corrosion resistant alloys in low pressure oxygen and role of chromium

Ogawa, Hiroaki; Kiuchi, Kiyoshi

Hyomen Gijutsu, 58(9), p.543 - 549, 2007/09

The oxidation mechanism of nuclear system components accelerated under irradiation was basically examined using a micro-balance device installed an rf low energy plasma source. Six alloys with different Cr contents of Fe-Ni alloy, stainless steels, Ni base alloys and metallic Cr were used in the experiment. The difference in the oxidation behavior between the low energy plasma and thermal equilibrium in oxygen atmosphere of 20 Pa was evaluated at 873 K for 20 hours. The oxidation behavior was analyzed with the in-situ weight change and the surface analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). On the thermal equilibrium, the weight gain is depressed with increasing Cr contents. On the other hand, the weigh loss was observed in the materials with high Cr contents in the low energy oxygen plasma with the high excitation condition. The oxidation behavior was analyzed with the mechanistic model, by considering the evaporation rate of volatile CrO$$_{3}$$ on the surface and the migration rate of O into the substrate.
