We have been developing a soft X-ray emission spectroscopy (SXES) instrument for electron microscopes (TEM, EPMA/SEM) with an extension of detectable energy range to 50-4000 eV. An introduction of valence electron spectroscopy with microscopy will supply fruitful information on bonding electrons, which cannot be obtained by EELS and EDS. For extend the lowest (or highest) detection energy upto 50 eV (or 4000 eV), a new laminar-type varied-line-spacing (VLS) grating, JS50XL, (or JS4000) has designed and manufactured. JS50XL and JS4000 having 1200 and 2400 lines/mm as well as coated by Au and a new multilayer-structure of W/B$$_{4}$$C for a wide-band energy region of 2000-3800 eV, respectively. Those gratings were installed and tested in a SXES spectrometer attached to a TEM. The extension in lowest detection energy was confirmed by Mg-L emission (JS50XL). The energy resolution was 0.2 eV at Fermi edge of 49.5 eV. It can be also seen a sharp Fermi edge for Li-K emission spectrum of metal-Li. The high energy resolution was confirmed by Te-La emission at 3.8 keV (JS4000). The full width at half maximum of the peak was 27 eV. The detection energy range was successfully extended by using the two new VLS-gratings.

Statistical precision of ERL-based NDA for spent fuel

Shizuma, Toshiyuki; Hayakawa, Takehito; Angell, C.; Hajima, Ryoichi; Minato, Futoshi; Suyama, Kenya; Seya, Michio

JAEA-Conf 2013-001, p.139 - 141, 2013/09

Nondestructive assay (NDA) of nuclear materials in spent fuel is a crucial technology in nuclear security and safeguards perspectives. A technique based on nuclear resonance fluorescence (NRF) with a mono-energetic $$gamma$$ source is one that has been proposed as such NDA systems. By calculating the background $$gamma$$ rays from spent fuel, the statistical precision of the proposed NRF-based NDA system was evaluated.

Measurement of femtosecond laser ablation by soft X-ray laser interferometory and reflective imaging

Nishikino, Masaharu; Hasegawa, Noboru; Ishino, Masahiko; Yamagiwa, Mitsuru; Kawachi, Tetsuya; Minami, Yasuo*; Terakawa, Kota*; Takei, Ryota*; Baba, Motoyoshi*; Suemoto, Toru; et al.

JAEA-Conf 2013-001, p.16 - 19, 2013/09

The dynamics of the femtosecond laser ablation is still not clear at the early stage. Several studies on the time-resolved imaging of femtosecond laser ablation process have been performed on various materials. In this study, we have demonstrated a pump and probe imaging of the metal surface morphology during the femtosecond laser ablation by using the laser-driven plasma induced soft X-ray laser (SXRL) as a probe beam. The pumping laser used for ablation was a Ti:Sapphire laser system based on chirped pulse amplification. The pump beam had a Gaussian profile and the focal spot size on the metal surface was about 70 micron at FWHM. The dependence for the pump laser fluence of the ablation surface expansion and the surface condition (roughness and density gradient) were observed from the soft X-ray interferogram and reflective image, respectively.

Recent activities of Applied Laser Technology Institute at Tsuruga Head Office of JAEA

Tsuchida, Noboru

JAEA-Conf 2013-001, p.131 - 134, 2013/09

The Applied Laser Technology Institute (ALTI) was established in the Tsuruga headquarters of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) in Fukui prefecture in September, 2009. The objectives of the ALTI are the contribution of the laser technology to the nuclear power technology as well as industrial applications. The latest activity of the ALTI is introduced here.

Development of the high spatiotemporal quality laser system

Kiriyama, Hiromitsu

JAEA-Conf 2013-001, p.142 - 145, 2013/09

In our institute, we are studying (1) a new scheme for separating isotopes for reduction of radioactive wastes in the nuclear fuel cycle, (2) a laser driven ion accelerator for cancer therapy. For these applications, it is necessary to improve the spatiotemporal quality and to evaluate the compact set-up of high intensity laser system. For a compact set-up, we have developed laser-diode (LD) pumped solid-state laser system based on Yb:YAG thin-disk. For a high temporal quality, we have developed nonlinear amplifier based on optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA). For a high spatial quality, we have introduced diffractive optical element (DOE) into high energy glass pump laser. We discuss the basic design aspects and present the results from our experimental investigations of these laser systems.

Development and applications of a new soft X-ray emission spectrometer for electron probe microanalysis and/or nanoanalysis

Takahashi, Hideyuki*; Handa, Nobuo*; Murano, Takanori*; Koike, Masato; Kawachi, Tetsuya; Imazono, Takashi; Hasegawa, Noboru; Terauchi, Masami*; Koeda, Masaru*; Nagano, Tetsuya*; et al.

JAEA-Conf 2013-001, p.13 - 15, 2013/09

A very unique high performance soft X-ray emission spectrometer (SXES) has successfully been developed which can be attached not only to transmission electron microscopes (TEMs), but also to scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) as well as electron probe microanalyzers (EPMAs). To extend the analyzed energy ranges, a newly designed laminar-type varied-line-spacing (VLS) grating JS50XL, for a lower energy range, 50-170 eV, and a multilayered VLS grating JS4000, for a higher energy range, 2000-4000 eV, have been developed and installed to this spectrometer. Application software has also been developed for a commercial use of SXES in several fields such as battery materials, steel and alloys, and electron devices. The appearance of this spectrometer attached to EPMA and a few results acquired are shown in the following figures. This development has been conducted as one of the projects of Collaborative Development of Innovative Seeds (Practicability verification stage) by Japan Science and Technology Agency.
