The electron accelerator and the -ray irradiation facility have been operated without serious trouble. The annual operation time in FY 2011 for the electron accelerator, the first, the second cobalt irradiation facility and food irradiation facility are 1,059 h, 18,722 h, 9,976 h and 7,427 h, respectively. Typically repairs were next ones. The beam control circuit trouble and the isolation trouble by mixing in of air into SF
gas at electron accelerator were repaired. The maintenance check of the second irradiation facility was done. The
Co sources were purchased and loaded to the second irradiation facility. Forty five pencil sources of
Co with length of 30 cm each, eight coin sources of
Co and the
-ray radiographic apparatus with a
Co source were disposed to Japan Radioisotope Association (JRIA).

The electron accelerator and the three -ray irradiation facilities were operated for various research subjects according to the operation plan in FY 2011 without serious trouble. The number of research subjects at the electron accelerator increased in the research fields of nuclear facilities and resources & biotechnology, and decreased in the fields of material processing and material for space. The number of research subjects at the
-ray irradiation facilities increased in the fields of material for space and material processing, and decreased in the fields of nuclear facilities and resources & biotechnology. Of all these research subjects, 15 ones at the electron accelerator and 94 ones at the
-ray irradiation facilities were relevant to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.

The AVF cyclotron was operated from May 9th in fiscal 2011 and all the planned experiments on April were cancelled due to scheduled blackouts originated from the Great East Japan Earthquake. The total operation time amounted to 3,038.4 hours. The extended operation from Friday evening to Saturday evening was carried out eight times in order to supply the cancellation on April. The regular yearly overhaul and maintenance were carried out.

The three electrostatic accelerators at the TIARA had no mechanical damage when the Tohoku earthquake happened on March 11, 2011. But, they could not be operated during April, due to the influence of planned power outage by TEPCO. These accelerators additionally operated on Saturday for ten days in order to compensate for the lost experiment time. As a result, the yearly operation time had kept the same level as the ordinary one. The ion beam of erbium (Er) with 11.7MeV was accelerated newly by the tandem accelerator, whose intensity was 20nA at charge state of 3+. The sequential generation/irradiation of two different kinds of fullerene ions was achieved at the ion implanter by a mixed powder method without exchange of the Freeman type ion source by the user's request.

An average charge of the constituent ions resulting from the foil-induced dissociation of cluster ions is smaller than that of monatomic ions at the same speed. It is considered that such a charge reduction effect in cluster ion bombardments depend strongly on the internuclear distance between constituent ions moving in a solid. However, there are few reports in which average charges of the constituent ions had been quantitatively evaluated in terms of their internuclear distance increasing by the screened Coulomb repulsion. Therefore, we developed a method which evaluate quantitatively the average charge for internuclear distance of constituent ions in solid through the measurements of the divergence angle of the constituent ions after foil penetration. The achieved results are approximately equal to the theoretical value derived from model considering the cluster effect in average charge.

The fast single-ion hit system installed in the HX course of the TIARA cyclotron was continuously improved for higher quality of microbeam and single-ion hit. The paper reports the progress in three major subjects of (1) reduction of the miss hit in the single-ion-hit irradiation, (2) development of the real-time detection system of single-ion-hit position and (3) new microbeam development, and the impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake on the system.
