The electron accelerator and the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facility have been operated without serious trouble. The annual operation time in FY 2012 for the electron accelerator, the first, the second cobalt irradiation facility and food irradiation facility are 910 h, 15,738 h, 10,537 h and 7,871 h, respectively. Typicaly repairs were next ones. The SF6 gas withdrawal system broke of the accelerator, and there was trouble of mixing in of air. The maintenance check of the first irradiation facility was done. The $$^{60}$$Co ources were purchased and loaded to the first irradiation facility. Fifteen pencil sources of $$^{60}$$Co with length of 30 cm each, twelve ball sources of $$^{60}$$Co and five $$^{137}$$Cs source were disposed of, and they were transferred to Japan Radioisotope Association (JRIA).

JAEA-Review 2013-059, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2012, P. 99, 2014/03

The impacts of oxygen in rhizosphere on the symbiotic nitrogen fixation in real-time was evaluated under various O$$_{2}$$ partial pressure. Soybean nodules were treated with mixed gas containing N$$_{2}$$ labeled with a radioisotope $$^{13}$$N and various concentrations of O$$_{2}$$, and the nitrogen fixation activity in the nodules was visualized by the positron-emitting tracer imaging system (PETIS). The results showed that under normal condition the nitrogen fixation ability of soybean plant was higher compared to that of under the other conditions (0% O$$_{2}$$ and 10% O$$_{2}$$). There was no significant difference in the nitrogen fixation activity between 0% O$$_{2}$$ and 10% O$$_{2}$$.

JAEA-Review 2013-059, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2012, P. 29, 2014/03

Recovery from the accident at Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is a matter of great urgency. In order to realize safe and secure operation for decontamination and decommissioning of NPP, it is indispensable to use equipments with sufficient radiation resistance (RR). In JAEA as well as other agency, various studies on RR of various materials and equipments have been conducted and a number of reports and papers have been published. Then, we started construction of a database named as "Database of Radiation Resistance on Polymer Materials and Equipments" and announced this database in a press release on June 1, 2012. At present, the database includes 878 data of materials, which are consisted of 423 data of polymer materials, 223 data of equipments and parts, 103 data of oils, fats and paintcoatings and 129 data of organic composite materials. The database will be extended and expected to be utilized for safe and secure operation.

A Macroporous SiC material synthesized from preceramic polymer with direct foaming and radiation curing

Idesaki, Akira; Sugimoto, Masaki; Yoshikawa, Masahito

JAEA-Review 2013-059, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2012, P. 42, 2014/03

A macroporous SiC material was synthesized from polycarbosilane (PCS) by direct foaming and radiation curing. A mixture of PCS and biurea, a blowing agent, was heat-treated in Ar to obtain foamed PCS body, irradiated by $$gamma$$-rays to fix the shaped body and finally pyrolyzed at 1000$$^{circ}$$C in Ar. In this work, effects of foaming temperature (280-320$$^{circ}$$C) and biurea content (0-1wt%) on the properties of obtained porous SiC material such as average cell size, porosity, compressive strength were investigated. It was found that the average cell size increased as foaming temperature and/or biurea content increased. Corresponding to increasing in average cell size, total porosity and open porosity increased and bulk density, closed porosity and compressive strength decreased. In case of the foaming at 280$$^{circ}$$C with biurea content of 1wt%, obtained porous SiC material showed average cell size of 0.5 mm, total porosity of 74% and compressive strength of 3.2 MPa.

Operation of electrostatic accelerators

Uno, Sadanori; Chiba, Atsuya; Yamada, Keisuke; Yokoyama, Akihito; Usui, Aya; Saito, Yuichi; Ishii, Yasuyuki; Sato, Takahiro; Okubo, Takeru; Nara, Takayuki; et al.

JAEA-Review 2013-059, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2012, P. 179, 2014/03

Three electrostatic accelerators at TIARA were operated on schedule in fiscal year 2012 except changing its schedule by cancellations of users. The yearly operation time of the 3 MV tandem accelerator, the 400 kV ion implanter and the 3MV single-ended accelerator were in the same levels as the ordinary one, whose operation time totaled to 2,073, 1,847 and 2,389 hours, respectively. The tandem accelerator had no trouble, whereas the ion implanter and the single-ended accelerator stopped by any troubles for one day and four days, respectively. The molecular ion beam of helium hydride was generated by the ion implanter, because the users required irradiation of several cluster ions in order to study the effect of irradiation. As a result, its intensity of beam was 50 nA at 200 kV. The ion beam of tungsten (W) at 15 MeV was accelerated by the tandem accelerator, whose intensity was 20 nA at charge state of 4+, because of the request from a researcher in the field of nuclear fusion.

JAEA-Review 2013-059, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2012, P. 181, 2014/03

The electron accelerator and the three $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities were operated for various research subjects according to the operation plan in FY 2012. The number of research subjects at the electron accelerator kept constant compared with FY 2011. The number of research subjects at the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities slightly decreased year after year. Of all these research subjects, 14 ones at the electron accelerator and 93 ones at the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation facilities were relevant to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.
