irradiation effects on LEDs and photo diodes (PDs) were evaluated toward the development of a radiation-resistant in-water wireless transmission system using visible light. The current-voltage characteristics and total luminous flux of the LEDs and the dark current and light sensitivity of the PDs were measured before and after the irradiation. After the irradiation, for the LEDs, the total luminous flux decreased and the resin lenses turned oxblood. Meanwhile, the current-voltage characteristics hardly changed. For the PDs, the light sensitivity decreased and the resin window turned oxblood while the dark currents stayed at most 10 nA. These results indicated that both the decreases of the total luminous flux of the LEDs and the light sensitivity of the PDs were mainly caused by not the degradation of the semiconductor parts but the coloring of the resin parts by the irradiation.

Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plants experienced seawater injection into the cores and spent fuel pools as an emergent measure for a short period after the accident. The injected seawater was exposed to radiation, and radiolytic species were produced. Especially, hydrogen peroxide (HO
) is known as an oxidant which affects corrosion of materials. In order to identify the important factor which results in the high concentration of H
O
in seawater radiolysis, the concentrations of H
O
in
-irradiated artificial seawater was measured and compared with the result of radiolysis calculation. Solutions containing some constituents of seawater were also measured to identify which ion affects H
O
production of seawater radiolysis. The experimental results showed that the H
O
production from seawater radiolysis is mainly attributed to reactions of Cl
and Br
in water radiolysis, though many kinds of ions are dissolved in seawater.

In case of the accelerated ageing test on polymer cable insulation used for the nuclear power facility, it is very important to recognize whether oxygen penetrates in the polymer wholly or not. To confirm this, there are the method by which polymer is soaked in the KOH solution at 70C for 5 minutes, dried and observed by a SEM-EDS, only for ethylene propylene rubber, one of the polymers. This study is to apply that method for polyethylene. Polyethylene sheet of 2 mm thickness was irradiated by
ray at a dose rate of 2 kGy/h for 400 h. A piece of irradiated polyethylene was picked up and the piece was soaked in the KOH solution for 24 h. After that, the piece was observed by a SEM-EDS. At the region within 70 micro meters from the surface, potassium is observed. It means that oxidation is occurred in this region. From now on, optimum soaking time will be examined.

The electron accelerator and the -ray irradiation facility have been operated approximately smoothly. The annual operation time in FY 2013 for the electron accelerator, the first, the second cobalt irradiation facility and food irradiation facility are 1242 h, 18,900 h, 11,804 h and 6,587 h, respectively. Typically repairs were next ones. The SF
gas withdrawal system was renewed at the electron accelerator. The 600 m
water storage tank was installed to keep pool-water for the cobalt facilities maintenance. New pieces of
Co sources were purchased and loaded to the first and the second irradiation facility. The maintenance check was done for the food irradiation facility.

Effects of gamma-ray irradiation on a cyanate ester/epoxy resin composed of dicyanate ester of bisphenol A (DCBA) and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) was investigated by changes in physicochemical properties such as gas evolution behavior, change in chemical structure, and so on, after the gamma-ray irradiation with dose of 100 MGy as maximum under vacuum. It was found that ether linkages are mainly decomposed by the gamma-ray irradiation with evolving gases of hydrogen, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide and decreasing in glass transition temperature.

The effect of changes in water by -ray irradiation on the pit initiation of Zircaloy-2 in artificial seawater was investigated. Surface analysis and electrochemical test were conducted. They showed that the hydrogen peroxide produced by
irradiation forms a passive film and the passive film is resistant to the pit initiation.
