The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS), operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc., suffered a meltdown after a large tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. The measurement of radiation distribution inside FDNPS buildings is indispensable for executing appropriate decommissioning tasks in the reactor's buildings. In addition, it is extremely important to accurately predict the location of radioactive contamination beforehand because the working time is limited owing to radiation exposure to workers. In this paper, a simple virtual reality (VR) system that can detect radioactive substances in virtual space has been developed to simulate real working environments. A three-dimensional (3D) photo-based model of the real working environment, including an image of the radioactive substance, was imported into the virtual space of the VR system. The developed VR system can be accessed using a smartphone and a cardboard goggle. The VR system is expected to be useful for preliminary training of workers and for recognizing radioactive hotspots during decommissioning of the work environment.

Radiation distribution measurements inside FDNPS buildings are indispensable to execute decommissioning tasks in the reactor buildings. We have developed a method of three-dimensional (3-D) image reconstruction for radioactive substances using a compact Compton camera. We also succeeded in visually recognize the position of the radioactive substances on the real space by integration of the 3D radiation image and the 3D photo-model created by photogrammetry.

In this study, the germanium detector assembly, installed at the Accurate Neutron Nuclear Reaction measurement Instruments (ANNRI) in the Material and Life Science Facility (MLF) operated by the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), has been characterized for extension to the measurement of the angular distribution of individual $$gamma$$-ray transitions from neutron-induced compound states. We have developed a Monte Carlo simulation code using the GEANT4 toolkit, which can reproduce the pulse-height spectra of $$gamma$$-rays from radioactive sources and (n,$$gamma$$) reactions. The simulation is applicable to the measurement of $$gamma$$-rays in the energy region of 0.5-11.0 MeV.

Development of a bump cathode element for two-dimensional neutron detection

円形のバンプカソードを用いた中性子検出素子を開発し、$$^{252}$$Cf中性子線源を用いた照射試験を実施した。開発した素子は三角配置した小型の円形カソードバンプを持っており、それらのバンプは入射位置を導出するためx, y方向にそれぞれ接続されている。照射試験はガス圧7気圧(He: 85%、CF$$_{4}$$: 15%)の条件下で実施された。試験の結果、均一性10.1%の優れた二次元応答を確認した。中性子により生成する二次粒子の飛程の違いから計算した位置分解能は1.89mm(半値幅)であることを確認することができた。

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS), operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc., went into meltdown after the large tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011. Very large amounts of radionuclides were released from the damaged plant. Radiation distribution measurements inside the building of FDNPS are indispensable to execute the decommission tasks in the reactor buildings. We have developed a light-weight compact Compton camera to three-dimensionally measure the distribution of radioactive contamination inside FDNPS. The total weight of the Compton camera is lower than 1.0 kg. The $$gamma$$-ray sensor of the Compton camera employs the Ce-doped GAGG scintillators coupled with a multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC: Hamamatsu Photonics K.K.,). We performed the 3D image reconstruction of the $$^{137}$$Cs-radioactive sources as shown in Fig. 1; the 3D radiation image is reconstructed using the multi-angle data measured with the Compton camera. Here, we introduce the development status of the 3D radiation imaging system consisting of the Compton camera. Moreover, we present the results of a performance evaluation test for 3D image reconstruction of radioactive contaminations in details.

A highly efficient array of high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors was developed and operated at the cold neutron beam facility PF1B of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) to carry out nuclear structure studies, via measurements of $$gamma$$-rays following neutron-induced capture and fission reactions. The setup consisted of a collimation system producing a pencil beam with a thermal capture equivalent flux of about 10$$^8$$ns$$^{-1}$$cm$$^{-2}$$ at the target position and negligible neutron halo. The target was surrounded by an array of eight to ten anti-Compton shielded EXOGAM Clover detectors, four to six anti-Compton shielded large coaxial GASP detectors and two standard Clover detectors. For a part of the campaign the array was combined with 16 LaBr$$_{3}$$:(Ce) detectors from the FATIMA collaboration.

アルミニウムショットキーダイオードセンサとフォトンカウンティングASICsを組み合わせたCdTeピクセル検出器の開発を行っている。このハイブリッドピクセル検出器は、200マイクロメートル$$times$$200マイクロメートルのピクセルサイズで、19ミリメートル$$times$$20ミリメートルまたは38.2ミリメートル$$times$$40.2ミリメートルの面積で設計された。フォトンカウンティングASIC SP8-04F10Kは、プリアンプ,シェーパ, 3レベルのウィンドウタイプのディスクリミネータ、および各ピクセルが24ビットカウンタを備えている。そしてウィンドウコンパレータを用いてX線エネルギーを選択するフォトンカウンティングモードで精密に動作し、100$$times$$95ピクセルのシングルチップ検出器が20$$^{circ}$$Cで実現している。本研究では、本検出器の性能を評価するため、白色X線マイクロビーム実験のフィージビリティスタディを行った。珪素鋼試料に白色X線を照射し、照射位置を走査しながらラウエ回折を測定した。その結果、各位置で隣接する画像間の差を用いることで試料内の粒界の観察に成功した。

Development of laser beam injection system for the Edge Thomson Scattering (ETS) in ITER

In the ITER Edge Thomson Scattering, the penetration in the port plug allows the laser beams to be injected into the plasma. The penetration has to be as small as possible to reduce neutron streaming from the plasma-side. In ITER, multiple laser systems are needed for high availability of Thomson scattering diagnostics. A new type of beam combiner was developed to obtain collinear, i.e. smallest footprint because of the common path, and fixed polarization from multiple laser beams using a rotating half-wave-plate. The rotating half-wave-plate method does not induce misalignment even if the rotating mechanism defects. The combined beam is injected into plasma and is absorbed at the beam dump. The beam alignment system was designed to hit the laser beam onto the center of the beam dump. The beam position at the beam dump head is monitored by multiple alignment laser beams which are collinear with the diagnostic YAG laser beam and an imaging system installed outside the diagnostic port.

The Belle II Silicon Vertex Detector comprises four layers of double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSDs), consisting of ladders with two to five sensors each. All sensors are individually read out by APV25 chips with the Origami chip-on-sensor concept for the central DSSDs of the ladders. The chips sit on flexible circuits that are glued on the top of the sensors. This concept allows a low material budget and an efficient cooling of the chips by a single pipe per ladder. We present the construction of the first SVD ladders and results from precision measurements and electrical tests.

The upgrade of the Belle II experiment plans to use a vertex detector based on two different technologies, DEPFET pixel (PXD) technology and double side silicon microstrip (SVD) technology. The vertex electronics are characterized by the topology of SVD bias that forces to design a sophisticated grounding because of the floating power scheme. The complex topology of the PXD power cable bundle may introduce some noise inside the vertex area. This paper presents a general overview of the EMC issues present in the vertex system, based on EMC tests on an SVD prototype and a study of noise propagation in the PXD cable bundle based on Multi-conductor transmission line theory.

Silicon avalanche photodiode linear-array detector with multichannel scaling system for pulsed synchrotron X-ray experiments

We developed an X-ray detector system using a 64-pixel silicon avalanche photodiode Si-APD linear array and fast pulse-counting electronics for multichannel scaling. The Si-APD linear array consists of 64 pixels each 0.01$$times$$0.02 cm$$^{2}$$ in size, with a pixel pitch of 0.015 cm and depletion depth of 0.001 cm. The fast electronics, consisting of an ultrafast application-specific integrated circuit and field-programmable gate arrays, can record both the position and timing of X-rays arriving at each pixel of the linear array with 1 ns pulse-pair resolution. The count distribution was measured using 14.4 keV synchrotron X-rays for nuclear resonant forward scattering experiments on $$^{57}$$Fe, and the spatial resolution was improved by inclining the detector. We also successfully measured amorphous alloy Fe$$_{78}$$Si$$_{9}$$B$$_{13}$$ during heating.

Evaluation of two-dimensional multiwire neutron detector with individual line readout under pulsed neutron irradiation

J-PARCセンター・物質・生命科学実験施設の中性子散乱施設のため、個別読み出し法と光信号伝送を利用したマルチワイヤ型中性子検出システムを開発した。開発したシステムの有感面積は128$$times$$128mm$$^{2}$$、各軸のピッチは1mm、計256本の信号線は個々に信号処理される仕様である。初のパルス中性子による照射特性試験をJ-PARCセンターにて行った結果、開発したシステムによりJ-PARCセンターの25Hz(40ms)の時定数をもったパルス中性子を正確に測定できることが確認された。最終的にはNi/Ti多層膜を利用した中性子反射率測定に成功することができた。

($$K^+$$,$$K^-$$)反応によるHダイバリオン探索実験(J-PARC E42)のためのTPCの開発を行っている。TPCにおいてHが2個の$$pi^{-}$$と2個の$$p$$に崩壊する事象を測定する。TPCのドリフト体積は50cm直径、55cmドリフト長を持つ8角柱構造をしておりAr-CH$$_4$$ガスを使用する。増幅部には3層のGEMを使用する。荷電粒子の運動量測定のためTPCにはドリフト電場と平行に鉛直方向の1Tの双極磁場を超伝導ヘルムホルツ型磁石によりかける。H崩壊のアクセプタンスを最大にするためダイアモンド標的がTPC内部の筒状の穴に設置される。さらに、超高レートの$$K^-$$ビームをTPCに直接照射するため陽イオンフィードバックを極力抑制必要がある。このためTPCにGEMとgating gridを採用した。

In ITER, the edge Thomson scattering system (ETS) is one of the primary diagnostic systems for measuring electron temperature and electron density profiles of edge plasma. In order to provide a high throughput of scattered light against a low throughput of neutron and $$gamma$$ ray from plasma, collection optics with a labyrinthine optical path in the port plug was designed. A combination of in-situ calibration (using two lasers with different wavelengths) and periodic calibration (using a super-continuum light source illuminating shutter rear-plate covered with a diffusive material) would provide accurate measurements in ITER against the degradation of spectral transmissivity due to the harsh radiation environment and sputtering/contamination of the first mirror. Specifications of subsystems were determined from assessments of measurement error. It was confirmed that the ETS will work in ITER with the specifications achieved by present technologies.

An Optical design and accuracy estimation for a JT-60SA edge Thomson scattering diagnostic

For collection optics for the edge measurements in a JT-60SA Thomson scattering diagnostic, a compact Petzval-like lens system with smaller lenses (200 mm in diameter) is designed so that the stop position is the middle area of the system, which is effective to miniaturize the lens size. Use of two flat mirrors placed in the middle area enables preventing interferences with the space limit. Generally, the angle ($$phi$$) between the scattering plane determined from the collection optics position and the laser polarization angle should be equal to 90$$^{circ}$$. Otherwise the measured intensity of scattered light decays with $$phi$$. We optimized the angle so that enough intensity is provided for both collection optics positions for the edge and core measurements. It was found that the minimum error in $$T_{rm e}$$ was given at a condition with $$phi=57.2^{circ}$$ for edge optics ($$phi=50.0^{circ}$$ for core optics).

Principle of an in-situ relative calibration method using a double-pass beam for Thomson scattering diagnostics

This paper presents detailed principles of an in-situ relative calibration method that determine electron temperature ($$T_{rm e}$$) without using optical relative transmissivity and then provide the optical relative transmissivity. The method requires a double-pass scattering system and signal ratio between the two signals from the forward and back scattering in each spectral channel. Statistical simulation results indicates the method suppress a systematic error in $$T_{rm e}$$ without considering chromatic degradation in optical components due to radiation effect. In this new method, scattering angle ($$theta$$) and $$T_{rm e}$$ are important parameters to evaluate the feasibility. It is found that the method is useful in a range of $$theta > 105^{circ}$$ at $$T_{rm e}$$=10 keV. The statistical error tends to decrease in high $$T_{rm e}$$ measurements regime.

Demonstration of in-situ relative calibration method for a Thomson scattering diagnostic on TST-2

This paper presents experimental results of an in-situ calibration method for Thomson scattering diagnostics in the TST-2 spherical tokamak. Usage of a double-pass scattering configuration enables finding the ratio of the output signal from the first (back scattering) pass to that from the second (forward scattering) pass, which can be treated as an independent function of electron temperature. The temperature from this new method shows a good agreement with that obtained by a standard method (single pass). Relative sensitivities among spectral channels can be then obtained from the method without accessing the machines. The sensitivities from this new method correspond to the values obtained from direct measurements within 5% except for a spectral channel with a wide band-pass range. These results demonstrate feasibility of this new in-situ calibration method, which can be applied to Thomson scattering diagnostics in severe radiation condition.

不安定核ビームを用いた低エネルギー反応の研究に向けて、低圧力のHe/CO$$_{2}$$混合ガスで動作するガス検出器の開発を行った。高入射率に対応するため、400-$$mu$$m厚のgas electron multiplier(THGEM)を比例計数管として使用することし、最大毎秒10$$^{5}$$個の$$^{12}$$Cビームを用いてテストを行った。テスト結果からTHGEMを用いたガス検出器が高入射率に対応できることを確認した。
