Simulation on neoclassical tearing mode stabilization by ECCD for JT-60 superconducting tokamak

Hayashi, Nobuhiko; Ozeki, Takahisa; Hamamatsu, Kiyotaka; Takizuka, Tomonori

Journal of Plasma and Fusion Research SERIES, Vol.5, p.519 - 522, 2002/00

Stabilizing simulation of the neoclassical tearing mode by an electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) in JT-60 superconducting tokamak has been done by using a 1.5D time-dependent tokamak code TOPICS and the modified Rutherford's equation. A local EC current in the center of the island stabilizes the mode. However, the EC current off the center moves the rational surface and decreases the stabilizing effect of EC. Necessary range of EC current location for the stabilization becomes wider for low EC power, or narrower for high EC power, when the EC current profile is more peaked. The long duration of EC injection widens this range. Peaked EC current profile, early injection and long injection duration lower the minimum EC power necessary for the stabilization.

High performance operational limits of tokamak and helical systems

Yamazaki, Kozo*; Kikuchi, Mitsuru

Journal of Plasma and Fusion Research SERIES, Vol.5, p.28 - 35, 2002/00

Plasma operational boundaries of tokamak and helical systems are surveyed and compared with each other. Global confinement scaling lawas are similar and gyro-Bohm like, however, local transport process is different due to sawtooth oscillations in tokamaks and ripple transport loss in helical systems.for stability limit, achievable tokamak beta is explained by ideal or resistive MHD theories. beta values. On the other hand, beta values in helical system are beyond Mercier mode limit.

Improving the performance of a negative-ion based neutral beam injector for JT-60U

Yamamoto, Takumi; Umeda, Naotaka; Kuriyama, Masaaki; Lei, G.*; Grisham, L. R.*; Kawai, Mikito; Oga, Tokumichi; JT-60 NBI-Team

Journal of Plasma and Fusion Research SERIES, Vol.5, p.474 - 477, 2002/00

The performance of a 500keV negative-ion based neutral beam injection system for the JT-60U has been enhanced significantly. By improving the beam divergence, 10-second operation of beam injection has been attained. Small peaks were observed in the beam profile measured at the near field. These peaks are clearly resulted from the deflection of the beamlets due to an unwanted electric field. Correction of the deflection reduced the heat load on the limiter at the injection port by more than 50%. The Doppler shifted spectrum from the negative ion beam was measured, and then indicated that electron stripping of the negative ion beam occurs primarily inside the extraction grid, as expected from theoretical consideration. The electron stripping contributed to half of the heat load on the grounded grid.
