The progress in structural analytical techniques of polymer crystals have been reviewed at first. The structural models proposed so far were reinvestigated and new models have been proposed for various kinds of polymer crystals including polyethylene, poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(lactic acid) and its stereocomplex etc. The hydrogen atomic positions were also clarified by the quantitative analysis of wide-angle neutron diffraction data, from which the physical properties of polymer crystals have been evaluated theoretically. The bonded electron density distribution has been estimated for a polydiacetylene single crystal on the basis of the so-called X-N method or by the combination of structural information derived from X-ray and neutron diffraction data analysis. Some comments have been added about future developments in the field of structure-property relationship determination.

The adsorption of zinc ions was found to increase with increasing the amount of ATU on the PSD particles. The adsorption of zinc ions was strongly dependent of the pH, and the maximum effect was demonstrated in the region of pH 5-7. At pH 7, the amount of zinc adsorption increased 2.64 times compared with the untreated PSD particles. The adsorbed zinc ions adsorbed on the modified PSD particles suppressed the decomposition of Zinc bis(dimethyldithiocarbamate) (Ziram), and thus increased its adsorption capacity. In addition, the FDA/ATU-modified PSD particles could be used repeatedly with a high level of the Ziram adsorption and recovery ability. Therefore, a simple and quick solid phase adsorption process of the Ziram analysis could be established using the FDA/ATU-modified PSD particles.

Based on the molecular structures, the fully-hydrated PEM systems were constructed with the coarse-grained particles representing several atom groups. In the equilibrium state, water appeared to percolate into poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA) graft chains to give a mixed phase, separated from the hydrophobic PTFE chains. This phase-separation picture is quite different from that of Nafion, in which only water particles were gathered excluding any polymer parts (a so-called water cluster). In order to obtain a deep insight into the phase-separation structure, the radial distribution function between water particles was calculated. As a result, there were found to be small water clusters with a diameter of only 1.8 nm in the water/grafts mixture regions.

-rays from a
Co source. The adsorption performance of methyl-2-benzimidazolylcarbamate (MBC) treated with immobilized Pectin- TAIC beads was investigated. Pectin was effective to enhance the MBC uptakes at pH11, in contrast to pH3 for TAIC. The amounts of MBC uptake of immobilized Pectin-TAIC beads were 1.3
3.9 times higher than those of PSD beads which were only irradiated without the use of Pectin and TAIC in the range of pH3 to pH11. The cycles of absorption-desorption assays show that the sorption performance of immobilized Pectin-TAIC beads shows excellent reproducibility, suggesting that the immobilized Pectin-TAIC beads are a useful adsorbent for the extraction of MBC from environmental water.

According to the conductometry, the heating at 120ºC was found to enhance the etch rate in the latent track without changing that in the bulk, thereby enabling us to obtain very high etching sensitivity for the preparation of nano-sized through-pores. The formation of hydroperoxides during this pretreatment should facilitate the introduction of the etching agent to improve etchability. Additionally, the irradiation of higher-LET ions, causing each track to more activated sites (like radicals), was preferable to achieve high sensitivity of the etching.

The absorption of methyl-2-benzimidazolylcarbamate(MBC) on HA-immobilized PSD was investigated. The amount of mBC uptake were found to be 1.4-2.7 times as large as that of PSD without immobilization of HA in the wide pH range of 3 to 11. Even after the absorption-dsorption cycle was repeated ten times, its absorption ability did not change.
