Roadmap for hydrogen production by High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR)

Kunitomi, Kazuhiko; Onuki, Kaoru

Jisso Kano Na Enerugi Gijutsu De Kizuku Mirai; Honebuto No Enerugi Rodo Mappu, 2, p.265 - 270, 2010/10

Present technological level and future development items of the hydrogen production by High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) were described. In addition, the reduction of CO$$_{2}$$ emission by the deployment of HTGR hydrogen production systems was investigated. Based on these evaluations, the roadmap for the hydrogen production by HTGR was determined. The reduction of CO$$_{2}$$ emission by the deployment of a 600 MWth HTGR system is evaluated at 113 ton/year in case that hydrogen produced by this system is used for fuel cell vehicles and industries. The HTGR hydrogen production system will make a big contribution to prevent global warming.

Non-toxic treatment of hexavalent chromium and recycle of the treated chromium; Appearance of a novel function of solid materials under radiation and its application

Nagaishi, Ryuji

Mirai Zairyo, 5(12), p.44 - 49, 2005/12

Hexavalent chromium has been widely used as industrial resources while it is a poison causing cancer towards human beings. "Radiation" such as electron beam and $$gamma$$ ray, and "solid oxide" such as silica and alumina are keywords to treat the toxic chromium and to recycle the treated non-toxic chromium. A novel method for the treatment developed in our group is reviewed in this report, where appearance of a novel function of usual solid materials under radiation, and recovery of the treated chromium as useful materials are also mentioned.

Structure of Mg$$_{2}$$SiO$$_{4}$$ glass made by a method for containerless supercooled-liquid-phase processing at high temperatures

Kohara, Shinji*; Suzuya, Kentaro; Takeuchi, Ken*

Mirai Zairyo, 5(4), p.28 - 33, 2005/04

We succeeded in producing highly pure glass made of "forsterite," contained in upper mantle of the Earth and meteorites. Although ordinary glass is made of silica network structure, this glass has an unsymmetrical network structure of magnesium oxide polyhedrons, which is deemed to destroy the silica network structure. We produced glass with extremely rare impurities by melting forsterite while floating it with inert gas and sound waves and then quenching it while holding it in an approximate microgravity condition equivalent to space. Development of a new optical fiber and improvement and cost reduction of operating equipment, such as operation laser, because high-purity glass can be produced using materials, which has been deemed to be appropriate.
